Navigation problem

When i start up the car first time and navigation is on, it is off aline and its not even working properly sometimes, then it will readjust later. Do I have to reset it or something? I switched it out and did the z2 image with new HD and it seems worse the accuracy like its not on target. The arrow does not stay straight. It worked good before on z1. What level do I reset at if thats the problem and does that erase anything?

What does the GPS antenna signal strength tell you? How many green bars and how many orange satellite icons?

Posted Oct 23, 2007 · 17:19 UTC#3

And did you hook up your VSS?

Posted Oct 23, 2007 · 21:37 UTC#4

Everything is hooked up, it readjusts and goes back to normal. its when first starting up mostly in the beginning of the day. should i reset it? when its off track it shows 1 green bar and i dont know a few orange.

Move your antenna to the roof temporarily and see if it helps. If it does, you have your antenna in a bad spot

my antenna is on my dashboard in the far right corner. i checked connection status and is my speed pulse supposed to be at 0? It does not move, but my speedo gauge moves in the unit. What is a speed pulse?

I dunno, because from what I've read, it is not possible to hook up with my Chevy truck. It shouldn't have any effect on your GPS, or at least mine doesn't.

The pillar could be blocking your sig. You should see no less than 2 green bars when the sig is not blocked by obstructions(trees..buildings...etc) You should also see more orange satellite icons...probably at least around 4 or 5 of them....

Maybe just off-centering your antenna is throwing it off so much. Maybe try to put it in the center of the dashboard.

I pretty much figure that you are driving it around, right? Because if you're sitting still, the arrow may tend to not stay straight like you mentioned.

either way, I cannot see how a reset would do any good with that low of signal.

here's what mine looks like...sorry Iphone pics.

You can see that i was bouncing from 1 green bar to 2 green bars....note the obstruction of the trees

I also have my antenna underneith and my dash, which is centered under the plastic..more/less behind the Z2

Its the Vehicle Speed Sense wire on the back of the deck. You hook it up to the corresponding wire on your car. It definitely improved my accuracy

See, I have a 2006.5 GTI and had mine professionally installed and they did not hook up the VSS. On some cars it is near impossible to get to and mine happens to be one of those cars. From what I read in the manual, it should still complete its learning phase and GPS will not be as accurate as it could be, but should be accurate none the less. My portable Nuvi 350 is as accurate as can be and runs on a rechargable battery which hooks up to nothing, so the VSS is not a requirement I am sure.

hmmm i got it professional installed and now i want to go back and tell him that the VSS wire is not hooked up. So what does that wire actually do? Is the wire still in the unit just not hooked up. What if he says he does not have that wire anymore. Is it just hanging in the back of the unit? where is the vss location on a 04 infiniti g35x

I'm confused....I'm an Avic newb and really don't claim to know anything.

But I hooked up my VSS wire as directed per this install

http://www.avic411.com/forum/viewtopic. ... o++install

yet my speed pulse doesn't show a single thing....Is speed pulse suppose to show 0? My Nav has been spot on. And from what I've read, speed pulse is a no-go on my truck(03 Chevy Silverado SS)

All vehicles can have a VSS accessed or installed. It's just that some are not worth the effort or expense. But to have all functions of the AVIC operate the way they are designed, you should have it. Doesn't mean you need it though.

Just to clarify, your speed pulse is what the AVIC sees from the VSS. It will only show a number when the vehicle is moving.

Mine doesn't show a number. Just zero. Guess I hit the wrong wire for VSS. And if that's the case, I wouldn't worry about the VSS, cause I can't see how the Nav could get any more precise.

What functions am I missing without the VSS?

sometimes it gets off track first thing when i start it up from my house then when i get going it goes back on track, but sometimes it has been worse. i want the vss connected.

I still think it's your signal that doing that...I had identical issues with mine...It worked great for the first couple of months, then it started doing exactly what you're explaining....sometimes it would have me off th road about 20-30 feet(guessing) and then when I took turns and whatnot, it would have me completely in a different part of town...

I finally checked out my antenna signal, and it wasn't too impressive...soooo.....I ripped out the HU and come to find out, that somehow over time, th exess wire from the antenna had come out of the little cubby hole that I stuck it in, and eventually made it's way to on top of the antenna, covering it up...

here's a little link to bring you up to speed on my newb-ness....
