  1. I got a custom size protector from Best Skins.

How easy is it to install without bubbles? I'm almost comically bad at putting screen protectors on my phones and tablets w/o bubbles - I either have them do it when I buy it or pay a dude at a kiosk at the mall $5 to do it. I don't have an issue putting them on straight, though, so if bubbling doesn't seem to be an issue I should be able to do it myself.

  2. Once you get to your destination, you've got to press the little "Checkered Flag" button on the display.  Then it asks you to confirm that you've reached your destination, which requires you to press a green bar that looks similar to the "Start Navigation" button.  THEN you're done.

It took me a while as well to figure out that driving to the destination wasn't enough.

I had no idea that you could do that. It's very good to know!

Mine will usually stop navigating when I reach my destination, but it absolutely refuses to at the entrance to my kids' school. I've tried numerous methods to get the latter right - intersection, address, manually setting it via the map, all to no avail.

  3. Lifetime subscriptions are a different matter, though.

I found this on the SiriusXM site:

If you purchased your Lifetime subscription
    • Before June 20, 2005: Yes, it is transferable from one radio to another any number of times.*
    • From June 20, 2005 until September 7, 2007: Yes, your Lifetime subscription is transferable a maximum of three times.*
    • On or after September 8, 2007: Lifetime subscriptions associated with home, portable or dock & play radios can be transferred a maximum of three times.*  Lifetime subscriptions first associated with or transferred to radios installed in vehicles by automakers or dealers are NOT transferable unless the radio is stolen, accidentally damaged or defective.

Once a lifetime subscription associated with a home, portable, or dock & play radio is transferred to a radio installed by an automaker or dealer, the subscription becomes non-transferable. Otherwise, Lifetime subscriptions associated with a home, portable or dock & play radio can be transferred a maximum of three times, for a fee.*

Please call 1-866-635-2349 to make the transfer. Read more about Lifetime Plans in our Customer Agreement. Please note that Lifetime subscriptions are no longer being offered to new subscribers.

*There is a $75 fee for each permitted transfer. Each of the fees which you may be charged will be subject to applicable taxes.

  4. There is no way that I'm aware of to connect a StarMate to the HU and operate it using the HU. The CD-SB10 would not do what you're trying to do.

Have you called SiriusXM and tried to do the equipment swap? Years ago they would allow lifetime subscriptions to be transferred a limited number of times for a fee, regardless of where they were purchased. Just act like it's obvious that you can do it (don't say anything like "I'm not sure if I can") and see how it goes. If you've already tried that, I'm afraid you're probably out of luck.

  5. That's odd. I have an iPod Classic hooked up at all times to USB1 on my 8000 and my Galaxy S5 always stays connected via Bluetooth.

Are you talking about Bluetooth purely for calls, or also for media playback? I only use mine for calls, so maybe that's the difference.

  6. So, if you can get Apple CarPlay on the AVH-4000NEX and use the Apple maps, why would you need to pay twice the price to get the AVIC-8000NEX? I'm thinking of upgrading from my old AVIC-110BT. What is the true advantage of the 8000 over the 4000? Is it really worth the extra $700?

I wouldn't want my ability to have integrated in-car navigation tied to my choice of portable device. In my case, I don't have an iOS device, nor do I have any particular desire to own one. I may at some point - I'm far from an Apple hater - but I prefer my navigation system to remain independent of the brand of my other devices.

The other advantage is the capacitive touch screen, but if that's the only consideration it wouldn't be worth the extra scratch (IMO).

  7. 1. You have to pick a TTS voice for that in your "regional" settings. It will tell you the ones that speak street names. Page 24 of the manual during initial setup, page 47 and 53 after.

    2. There is a circle with a down arrow on the screen. Press that to select your audio source. Page 20 of the manual.

  8. I'd have to see what the OEM connector looks like on a Corvette, but many OEM antennas can be retrofitted easily, without an adapter. Mine (on a Volkswagen Passat) could've been connected that way, but I opted for an adapter so that it would be easy to put the factory HU back in when I eventually sell the car. Any XM antenna will work with any XM tuner, it's just the connectors that have to be figured out. Heck, the OEM antenna in my VW is a Sirius antenna, and it works fine with the SVX200V1, which uses the XM satellites.

  9. I have an AVIC-8000NEX that I've been trying to get to work with my Galaxy S5 in AppRadio Mode, but I have thusfar been unsuccessful. Though the S5 isn't on Pioneer's list, others have reported that it works, so I must be missing something.

I have the Samsung MHL adapter connected to USB1 and the HDMI connector on the 8000NEX. I am able to go into AppRadio mode, but all that I get is a mirror of the phone's screen (a small sun-like globe on a gray background and the buttons on the left side). The 8000's button's work (for example, I can access the phone's menu from the 8000's screen), but I don't have any apps available. There are two apps checked within the AppRadio app as compatible - CarMediaPlay and Waze. The Bluetooth connection looks good.

So, basically, it looks like it's connected, the screen is mirrored, but I can't access any apps. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I'm happy to clarify anything that I haven't explained properly.

  10. OK, that makes sense. It is very sensitive to traffic - for example, it tries to take me off I-85 thanks to non-existent construction-related traffic around my mom's house every single time.

The rerouting it did on I-95 was maddening, too. Get off 95 (which is stopped, so good idea there), get on US-1. Drive 3 or 4 miles on US-1, get back on 95 (which is still stopped), go to the next exit, get back on US-1, lather, rinse, repeat. I eventually just ignored it and stayed on US-1 until I saw in the itinerary that it wasn't going to try to take me off 95 again once I got back on.

It does make me wonder what the range for traffic info received via FM is. Like, when I'm in Scranton or Harrisburg, how far does it extend? Baltimore? DC? Richmond? Farther?

  11. I visited my in-laws in Pennsylvania over the weekend, and used my nav, as I always do, for turn reminders in case I zone out. My factory nav system always sent me the same way - I-81 to US-15 to I-70 to I-270 to I-95. The NEX sent me that way as well when I was up in June. This time, though, it sent me I-81 to I-83 to I-695 - a route that's farther by 20 miles, with worse traffic because it catches I-95 in Baltimore and takes I-495 around Washington to the east (through Greenbelt and Alexandria) instead of the west.

What gives? The start and destination points were exactly the same, and I haven't installed any firmware or map updates. I guess it could be because of traffic on I-70 or I-270, but I don't think information for that area was available when I was at the point that the routes diverge (Harrisburg).

  12. I have 105 CD's in lossless on a 128GB flash drive. Works for me if I want high quality tunes. 256kbps is also very good if using iPod/iPhone.

iPod is truly the simplest way to go. Even get an iPod classic which can get up to 160GB's. Run a usb to your glove compartment and leave it in there if you just want music.

That's exactly what I did when I bought my car. My music library is around 25,000 tracks, and it takes up about 70GB. I know lossless is the way to go, but most of my tracks are 192-320kbps MP3s, which is fine for my tin ear. :)

  13. I've had my 8000NEX since late June. Aside from one instance of the dreaded "GPS positioning not possible" issue soon after install, everything has been peachy except a few crackles here and there.

Today, after I dropped my kids off at school, I decided to switch to map view. It churned for a few seconds, which was odd since I'd been driving for a few minutes, and then it ran me through the initial configuration wizard. After I completed it, I found that some settings had reverted to the default - the audible speed limit warning and the nav volume, at the very least.

Everything else I checked seemed to have been retained - all of my saved places, the particular type of map I'd switched to, the motion bypass was still working, my phone was still paired via BT, my SiriusXM presets were all there, the theme and custom splash screen were still the same, and so forth. I ran the nav from the kids' school to home when I picked them up, and it seemed to work fine.

Any idea what would cause such a thing? Should I start to worry? I have a SquareTrade warranty on it (I didn't buy it from an authorized reseller, so I wanted to make sure I had coverage in case something happened), so I wouldn't be totally SOL in the event of a catastrophic issue, but obviously my hope is that this is just a weird, isolated incident.

  14. It would've been really easy for me to add a camera if my Passat hadn't come with one - I could've had one from Amazon in two days in that case, or even one from eBay that's built into the trunk release like the OEM one.

However, it did come with one, and I was comfortable with the quality, so I wanted to use it. I found exactly one source for the appropriate 26-pin adapter. It shipped directly from China, and took a couple of weeks to arrive. That was annoying, but overall not a huge deal. It would've introduced even more serious delays in getting my install done had there been a problem with it, though.
