Can you keep an iPod plugged in to USB 2 and easily switch between it and CarPlay with an iPhone on USB 1?

It is listed at $600 for preorder at Crutchfield. Given I can get AppRadio 4 for the same price, which one should I choose (I only plan on using CarPlay)? The main benefit for the Alpine is the larger screen. The main benefit for the Pioneer is I could hook up my iPod Classic to USB 2 and use it for short drives when I don't feel like taking my phone out of my pocket.
