Yesterday I purchased and had a Pioneer 4500nex installed in my 17yo daughter's 2016 Cruze.

She loves the radio!  It sounds so much better than stock, and the added functions (wireless carplay), seemingly unending expandability (2 usb ports, hdmi, sd, DVD)...

But the one thing that casts a shadow over all the above is the absence of a volume knob.

I found an article https://www.instructables.com/Volume-Knob-for-2020-Pioneer-DMH-NEX-Radios/  that details how to make the knob, but i'm not sure it applies to the 4500 (does the 4500 have a W/R Port?) and even if this volume knob would work for the 4500, there is absolutely no way i would trust my limited skillset to a project like this.

I was wondering if anyone else here may have already gone through this, or if there is a retail option rather than homebrewing it.

I actually created this original volume knob project, but while I have the DMH-WT8600NEX the AVH-4500NEX is a different enough animal that I am not sure it would work.  According to crutchfield it does have a W/R line input on the back, but that does not mean it would necessarily work (I would be surprised if it didn't, but you never know).  But I did make a fork of this project to work for IR which this unit does have, so you could use the IR method, (but you would need to place the IR eye somewhere with line-of-sight).  I don't know enough about the 4500NEX to say for sure.  You might want to ask on Reddit (maybe in CarPlay reddit or Pioneer???)

Another possibility is a universal remote on the steering wheel, that learns the IR commands, like these, (now sure how great this would be though)

  2. When you say, "music app" do you mean the default Music app, or just "any" music app?  I no longer use the Apple music app, but the music app I use is not experiencing any problem.  If it’s only on the stock music app, does it have the same problem with other music apps like Spotify?

Just installed it today. Not crazy about the 5x2 layout, as now all the icons are much smaller. Anyone know if there’s a way to change that layout?

You could try to update the firmware by putting 1.3x on a usb stick?  Not sure it will let you downgrade, (not sure anyone has tried to do it?)

it’s not just 5x2 though, it’s now reporting its resolution properly, (you can see more of the map/more entires per screen, etc) so consider if its worth downgrading

  4. A post I made back here

about the unit booting into this display, had gone away until I updated to iOS 14.3 now it boots to this screen every time!?  Anyone else having this?

Update:  So the update is, if I hit OK on the warning at the start the unit will show wiif-audio for a sec, and switch to CarPlay GUI, but if I leave the warning to time out, then it will stay in wifi-audio section.  This only started happening around the iOS 14.3 update, so I suspect its a bit of a incompatibility with what 14.3 wants and the Pioneer is doing on a timed out screen/(maybe just timing)

Update:  I only tried it once, but it looks like if I start the car with the phone plugged into USB, then even if I wait for the warning screen to timeout, it goes directly into CarPlay.  So the issue seems to be related to either/(or inclusive) iOS 14.3, wireless CarPlay, Pioneer Warning screen.  This makes me think their might be a setting in iOS I'm missing but I have tried changing a LOT of stuff so far to no avail,

It seems that it doesn't see it but I use a usb to play music and videos everyday

I tried about 6 other USB sticks before finding one that worked.  Those other ones that failed, I have used to play videos on the headunit, so there is something about the firmware environment that seems much more "picky" than when using media.  The USB that worked for me was swag from some trade show, (it was a little plastic man, whose head comes off and is a 1GB usb stick), so I don't have any details about its make/etc.   Maybe bonee can mention a make/model/link for one that worked?

Has anyone been having problems updating the 1.3 with usb. Hasn't been working for me neither the caravassist

Is the issue you are having with USB the fact that it doesn't seem to see the USB stick?  Or is it something else?  I did have a HELL of a time getting the DMH-WT8600NEX to accept a USB stick.  I went through a bunch of different USB stick, all of them failed to be recognized, the only one that worked was a small, very old 1Gig USB stick

  7. I've have been on all the iOS 14 betas and I still have it.  But I will say it was much lower in b4-b5, but I find that b6 (for the last couple of days) has been worse.  I think it might just be random though and unrelated to iOS; but I hope its related and Apple is trying to compensate for whatever the problem is.  I am largely hoping that iPhone 12 Pro (and QualComm) will fix it by getting rid of the cancer that is Intel modems

One thing I can tell you about doing the bypass - they make it seem like you gotta be quick triggered.  That's just not the case.  Do a ten second hold - then a pause - then set your finger in the 2nd position.  I must've tried it 100x - then I watched the video again and noticed the pause.  Worked on my 1st

I agree. When I used the stopwatch, I failed at least 20 times, then just counted in my head, got it on the first try

I would love more information on this what kind of Rotary encoder  Can you send me more information I’m sure I could build a circuit once you show me the parts list pleaseCan you send me more information I’m sure I could build a circuit once you show me the parts list please

If you follow the reddit links, it has all the history and parts and even a diagram ... but the latest info (and a link to the code is at this one) .... you might want to read the links inside to get more context.

  10. All you need is willpower.  When I first did the Alpine volume knob I had never worked with Arduino and hadn't done electronics since high-school, but the need for a volume knob was strong.  That said you might have to solder some connections, so a soldering iron at least is needed.  If you buy the same rotary encoder and digital POT that I bought, at least you will not need to change the code at all.

Something to note, I dont have a iDatalink, so "just in case it does cause problems" I didnt want you to think I had one and it was working?  How long does it take to move the volume with the iDatalink?  With this circuit its about 41msec per volume movement, but there are some oddities about Pioneer, if you move the volume up 3 it will move the volume up one and draw that volume overlay; while that overlay is drawing those other volume up commands are dropped, (you basically have to wait about 850msec) before sending other commands?  Maybe you are seeing that problem on the Maestro?

  11. The problem is very similar to Alpine problem, especially “that certain areas can do it”.  Maybe turn LTE off before the drive and ON after?  Alternately, maybe try another carrier’s SIM (a friends/wifes/etc) to see if they have the same problems in the same spots (it should not which suggests cell-tower triangulation).  Thats probably more extreme and turning LTE.  Its unfortunate that Shortcuts can only turn off CELL and NOT specific LTE.  But if you music was local, and you used google with Local Maps, that might be an idea (have an automation turn cellular off?). (never tried that though)

I have seen something similar with my Android Auto setup.

For AA they have a setting in the Settings for "auto launch AA", with CarPlay its on the phone, but CarPlay usually auto-starts into the CarPlay interface but this is going into the Pioneer UI interface.  And only about 40% of the time.  Are you saying that sometimes your AA starts in AA, and sometimes it starts in Pioneer UI (connected to AA) ?  Its a bit of a hassle, because I have to hit menu to go back into the Main Pioneer Home display and hit CarPlay from there, (normally it should go right into CarPlay).  This never happened before firmware 1.13 (I'm not blaming it on that firmware), I just dont recall it happening before then?
