  1. I think the password thing is just a waste of time.  Even if you had a light to denote an active password, most theives aren't that smart to know the intricacies of each type of head unit.  I feel like they'll still rip your dash apart as fast as you can, take the head unit home and try to hook it up, only to find the password is there and it's useless.  However, the damage and loss to yourself is already done, so really the only thing a password does is ensure that everyone loses, instead of just you.

I have the 4200nex, it's a good unit and I do take the faceplate off in questionable neighborhoods.  No one is going to steal it in my driveway, or at work, but if I park at a friends apartment complex, where a theif see's my car several times and waits for me to park, I take it off and inside with me.

  2. You head unit currently thinks it's in reverse, because you selected to have the camera activate on either an active high or active low signal.  The camera being installed doesn't matter.  Take the reverse signal wire on the back of the head unit, and wire it to either ground or 12v until it parking lines are gone and the normal display appears.  Then change the setting back and rewire it back.

  3. I've had the 4200nex for over 2 years, and I've only used the motorized face less than 12 times.  I only use it to add more content to the SD card.  But so far, no issues with it.  If you plan on constantly swapping CD's, then I would find reason to worry depending on how long you want it to last.  But i've had car decks with motorized faceplates and CD's, and never had any issues back in the day for years, back when CD's were popular.

  4. i do this, i use a miracast adapter plugged into the HDMI port. Then just select hdmi and use the YT music app. If you want to control it from your headunit install arunchained from the play store (30.00) and it allows u to control your phone from your radio.

That's exactly what I do for youtube.

  5. The only difference between the 8200nex and the 8201nex is the backup camera comes packaged in the box with it.  If your car already has a backup camera, you wouldn't buy the 8201.  In fact, the head unit inside the box of an 8201 package is actually still labeled 8200nex.

Android auto and apple car play work just as well as a factory head unit with AA/carplay built it.  The speed of AA/carplay is actually dependant on your phone since the software runs on there, and the pioneer head unit is just an interface.

I've never had a bluetooth issue with my 4200nex.

The differences between the 4200nex, 5200nex, 6200nex, 7200nex and 8200nex are things like navigation built in without using AA/carplay, different button layouts, larger screens, capacitive vs resistive touch screens, and some only have carplay without android auto.

  6. Yes, I'm using a raspberry pi on my 4200nex to play movies.  But I don't know how you would get the touchscreen to interface with the pi.

I just use an RF remote ( https://osmc.tv/store/product/osmc-remote-control/ ), the remote works perfectly and has lasted the test of 3 summers and winters in the car 24/7.

I don't know about the 8200nex, but on my 4200nex the highest resolution I could set the pi to was 576p, which still looks awesome on such a small screen.

  7. Yep as said, 480p input or I was able to get 576p to work on my Raspberry PI.  But that's about the highest it'll go in terms of resolution input signals.

I was able to get a 1st gen Chromecast to work, which goes down to 480p.

What sucks is on my last car I had a cheap DUALAV (DV625BH) head unit which took my Raspberry Pi 1080p signal and downscaled it without any issues.  Seems like a huge oversight on pioneers part.

If you want to use the Micca Media Player, you'll need to convert it to RCA input with https://www.amazon.com/VAlinks-Composite-Converter-Adapter-Blue-Ray/dp/B01M1RETUE/ref=sr_1_2?s=audio-video-accessories&ie=UTF8&qid=1499695986&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=hdmi+to+rca&psc=1     At 480i resolution, you really can't tell the difference much between HDMI and RCA analog.

  8. Most consumer grade electronics have a thermal limit of 150F.  That pertains to things like capacitors, regulators, and ARM processors etc......  Most head units have heat sinks and thermal holes on the chassis, some have fans in the back.

You could buy something like this and install it under the head unit somewhere, or in a side panel inside the dash that leads to your footwell, as long as you can get air behind the head unit.  Just cut a hole and screw this one in, it'll look like a clean install.  https://www.amazon.com/AC-Infinity-AIRPLATE-Cooling-Cabinets/dp/B009COAEUG/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1499480717&sr=8-8&keywords=ac+infinity+fan

  9. I had the opposite experience.  I have an iphone but bought a $100 android phone so I could use an SD card and load up all my spotify playlists.  Then I discovered that I like android auto better.  The coverart looks much nicer while using spotify and while navigating, it'll give a pop-up window showing the song for a few seconds after it's changed.

Waze is also in beta earlier this month, so won't be long until all the bugs are worked out and they can go to a full release.  https://www.engadget.com/2017/06/07/waze-android-auto-beta/

  10. You have a defective unit, it shouldn't be that slow.  Mine's responsive and fine and volume button presses are always instantantaneous.  Also, once in carplay, the speed is actually dictated by the generation of iphone, because the software actually runs from the phones processor.  But volume changes have nothing to do with the phone, which leads me to believe your unit is defective.

  11. Waze for android auto is in closed beta testing right now.  Won't have to use an hdmi cable for much longer.  The already added the map submenu to android auto.  It was in WAZE's beta program in april, now it just entered android's beta program.

But to your point, I have a 4200nex and the apps don't look washed out at all, they look as good as they do on my phone..  Are you sure you set your brightness and contrast levels correctly???

  12. It's called "HDCP", it's not specific to the iPHONE but something done by the app itself.  It basically protects the movie and tv content from being recorded by an external recorder.

What I do with my pioneer 4200nex is use a chromecast to play netflix.  Not sure if the directTV app works with that.

  13. You can take pioneer's specs and basically throw it out the window.  For instance, I"m using a large 256GB PNY SD card to play movies to a rear overhead monitor.  The sole reason for choosing the pioneer was because it allows you to do this, as well as select other sources to play to the rear.

Also, for reference, the highest resolution I can seem to pump into the pioneer's HDMI from my raspberry pi is 580p video.

But to your question.  I'm using wondershare video converter ultimate to batch encode my videos, I have a fully loaded 256gb SD card, loaded with MP4 videos.  I use wondershare specifically because it can take full advantage of my nVidia Geforce 970 video card when encoding.  So after ripping my DVD's and Blu-rays with MakeMKV, my computer with encode the file down in less than 7 minutes for a DVD and less than 15minutes for a blu-ray.  It's set to MP4, H264, AAC audio.  Bitrate doesn't seem to matter much, I usually do about 2000-3000kbps for my tablets. I drop these same files into my pioneer's SD card.

The few movies I've found that don't work are usually because of the aspect ratio, the pioneer simply doesn't like some movies aspect ratio's and refuses to play them.

Also FYI, for your iPADs, iPhone, and APPLE TV GEN4.  I use an app called INFUSE(https://firecore.com/).  It's absolutely the best way to watch movies on apple devices.  It plays everything I throw at it, and doesn't need me to special encode videos for apple.  It plays every video I give it.  You need a NAS unit to host the movies though.  I use a QNAP NAS, but you could also use an old laptop or something to host files on your network.  A raspberry pi2/3 and an external hard drive also works well for $35.
