i use the 30gb classic which is the earliest you can use so as long as yours came out the same time as 5th gen or later you should be fine

you should just tap the screen to make video info appear/disappear. the ipod thing i have no clue. i have the same 30gb classic and mine works fine. maybe you need to update the navi if you can

highly doubt the 4th gen will work dont think the 4th gen has the right software to work with 3rd party hardware
