  1. sorry guys ive been in the PC biz a long time putting your HD into the freezer is an old trick to retrieve data on a failing HD sometimes its the only way to get data off id didnt say leave it in there a long time lol ive done it to my z2 5-6 times now. you can put them in the freezer for 15 minutes to get data that is other wise lost. to cool it down your ac duct on your car works fine and is the best method but you can still stick in the freezer or fridge for 5 min with no ill effects. oh well you dont have to follow me
  2. my guess is that 35% or so of the hard drives are defective from the get go. the problem is once they overheat they get worse quick as to where 70% hold there own in the heat a little better. you may find yourself in the same shoes shortly unless you get a luck of the draw hard drive next time buy your own HD and back up a copy of your new HD so that you have a plan. stopping the heat first so that your HD doesnt take a dump is mandatory with these units as they cannot disapate heat from the HD. Sunshade, cracked windows are all i can offer rite now. im looking into a few other th
  3. as i stated the z2 cannot cool the hard drive down once it gets too hot. not sure why bridge4d can play music through the hard drive. mine will just jump around song to song even if it boots when the hard drive is too warm. if your unit doesnt boot see how long it will play a song in the hard drive. try this when it doesnt boot, pop out the hard drive and put it in the fridge or freezer put it rite back in and i bet it boots. guys this hard drive pops out in a few seconds give it a try. im also wondering if stuffing this z2 in a dash if a few of the wires in back are blocking
  4. guys i have this down to the hard drive and the hard drive alone. if your unit does not boot its because the hard drive is just too hot. if the unit boots but the music jumps around in the libarary then its just shy of not booting. when ever the music is jumping around pull your hard drive out and feel it it will be hot. let it cool and it will boot and play fine. 2 schools of thought #1 the z2 does not disipate heat well enough to cool a hot hard drive. this is really evedent. #2 there is about a 30-35% [my guess] ratio of hard drives that are prone to heat failure before
  5. since i bought mine back east from a non certified dealer im pretty much stuck. someone posted about a work around the warranty issue but ive goy this nailed down to a hard drive problem. from what ive read here theres probably about 30-35% with heat related hard drive issues. hard drives have always been funny beast and is say some toshiba hard drives are prone to heat failure and its luck of the draw getting one. my z2 has been booting fine lately but my music jumps around wildly in the libarary if i take the hard drive out its hot. let it cool and it plays perfectly. i really
  6. today was 85f outside and unit booted perfect but as soon as i go to library it starts jumping from song to song pulled hard drive out after a 20 minute ride in ac and the hard drive itself was pretty hot if i had to guess id say definatly over 100. rite now im going to try and use my hard drive like a mobil rack and take it with me so it never heats up in the truck. the problem i see is once the z2 starts running it wont cool itself down properly and the hard drive will heat up and fail but it will boot up everytime this way and your music will play through the library without fail but if
  7. i did the recent update and it did help with mine [pre june bypass cd update]. before 80 degree days and it would stay in the froze position. sunscreen is a must and im working on a few different ideas as well. the hard drive is the culprit yesterday mine would not boot because i left the windows barely cracked and it was hot my unit would not boot after 20 minutes of ac. i took the hard drive out and it was pretty hot put it in the freezer for 3-5 minutes and put it back in cold and it booted perfect with the rest of the z2 still very hot. the new update did make my unit more
  8. i did the upgrade and it did help but mine it was locking at 80 degrees with a breeze with the windows rolled down in the shade lol. now it has to be parked in direct sunlight on a 100 degree day to feeze. this is still not acceptable. mine never froze until a really hot day [105] and then started freezing with regularity. someone forgot to mention or even comment that infinti and other high line cars never have this heat issue and there hard drive based nav,s as well. lol. why is drilling holes to vent cold air to the unit considered hacking up my car and this makes me a bad mech/tec
  9. mine froze but it took a really hot day. i wonder if the rite question is does the new update raise the temp in which the z2 feezes. it did for me. mine would freeze on a 80 degrree day with the windows down. now unless the windows are rollled up and its over a 100 it wont.
  10. I understand heat issues im not only a mechanic and a computer tech i love overclocking computers and been doing it for years and making things that run hot cooler thats what this thread was about. im surrounded by infiniti product all day everyday. not 1 unit has a problem heat related and every unit everyday boots up and runs perfect and we dont have to sell sunshades to protect our product. these infiniti units run perfect even with the windows rolled up tight in the sun when its 110 outside not like the cool place that you live. i started this thread to help those many people who
  11. tillithz your so far out of line. think about what your saying. first top of the line cars like infiniti lexus and bmw use hard drive based nav units almost like ours. NONE of theres freeze up in heat and wont boot period there great units. unlike ours that are tempermental too heat. quit backing pioneer on this and do the homework. we have on this unit.. you live in a cold/mild place that never gets too hot and you have the balls to tell us to take better care of our units ??? there are to many people with this problem its not up for debate jack. go hijack someone elses post or t
  12. im getting a sunshade too lol thats probably the best advise so far. my boss was telling me the same thing.
  13. tillithz im in auburn 2 hours east of you. its freakin hot up here in the foothills. my truck said 104 and thats the sensor in the shade. i bet the dash in my gmc was 120 plus which will shut down the z2 heat has caused many of these units to not boot up on hot days. and im not the first person to duct cold air too it. with that said i could patch the holes up anytime but in the winter i dont use those ducts anyway so the holes are fine. I dont really want to mod my truck anymore its time to mod the z2 so these hard drives quit cookin and freezin our units. i dont think pioneer w
  14. has anyone tried doing any kind of cooling mods like we do when we overclock computers?? ive drilled holes in my ac duct to try and vent some cold air to the unit which helps it reboot quicker instead of staying froze/locked on hot days. id really like to put in a bigger fan or modify the heatsink or drill holes in the outer case or something to help disipate some of the heat this thing puts out and to cool it quicker internaly so it doesnt freeze on boot up as often. it was really hot today and after a 20 minute drive home with the ac blasting i pulled my hard drive out and it was
  15. my z2 was just the opposite i was having freezing problems pretty bad and after the update it hasnt froze yet.
  16. Well today was rite at 100 and without a window shade i would have bet money that my z2 would not boot but it did!! and it booted every other time i tried tonight. it hasnt done that in 4 days. all i did this morning was pop my hard drive out and have a look see but after replacing it i still had a couple of freezes. Once it unfroze after sitting in the ac for 20 minutes and booted fine i did the pre june bypass z2 update 33.6 mb and it has not failed since. i was pretty impressed when it booted today at 100 degrees outside. i dont think the update is the smoking gun were looking fo

  18. i deleted everything as well but it still freezes. mine wont even record one song now to the HD after 1 hot day and this thing freezing it has got worse. even if the hard drive is locked im wondering if after a while of having hot days knowing this hard drive throws errors [when hot] if the main info on the HD is becoming corrupt. we all know windows files [boot files] that are locked and they get corrupt for various reasons and cause your home pc not to boot. i want to reformat my HD but after reading here as many pages as i can i still dont know how. ive read about using acro
  19. you cant pick on it for sakes of pulling off the road when typeing stuff in. All nav units are that way and for good reason. most of us bypass it anyway. if you read your manual first and played with it you wouldnt need to check out the manual while driving for what its worth im with ya on the 1500 dollar mistake. I wish i wouldnt have bought it. now i have to try and turn a sows ear into a silk purse. my gripe is not the nav, none are perfect. its the not working on warm days [feezing on start up screen] and now my freakin unit wont copy cd,s to the hard drive correctly and musi
  20. i updated gracenote, cut holes in my ac ducting so that cold air blows on my z2 and did a level 4 wipe. left it running in the shade with ac for a hour and my dash apart so it was not warm to the touch and mine z2 still skips when copying to the hard drive. it did all start after a 100 plus day and i was froze at splash screen until the next morning. this crazy unit has become intermitent at best now. seems like the heat has done something to it.
  21. has anyone thought that areas of the hard drive that we cant delete with a level 4 wipe are getting corrupt causing music tracks to jump around or get copied half way. i was thinking with heat that gracenote files are getting jacked when were using this on hotter days, maybe other files as well. it seems like once your avic starts freezing at startup it just gets worse quickly and the fact that you do the test when its warm and you get HD errors tells me the whole file system is probably jacked maybe a complete format of the HD would help ill try it today and see. mine froze 5 time
