A 350Z, an AVIC-Z1, and a Hacked Xbox... (56K beware)

Recommended Posts

I was flipping through the Z1's instruction manual, just trying to learn as much about the system as possible, when I came across the section about the AV Input. I started thinking to myself if I could hook anything up to that and it suddenly hit me; I have a spare hacked Xbox with 160GB of games on it.

I start going over everything I would need to hook it up and I realize I already have everything I need:

Xbox w/ big Hard drive & lots of games: Check
Wireless RF Controllers: Check
Wireless Network Adapter for Xbox: Check
Power inverter: Check
Space on existing power block: Check
Inline 10 A fuse: Check
Noise filter: Check
3 Position Switch (with 1 being a momentary switch): Check

So, it only took me about 2 hours but this is just my proof of concept. I still need to wire in the switch and find a better mounting place for the Xbox.

Some of the pictures are fuzzy, that's not the display, that's low light and a shaky hand:

That is totally awesome! Did you use a power inverter to go to 115v AC and then back into the xbox? OR did you use a dc to dc? I could see me doing something like that as well. Personally I like Avalaunch (just for ease of copying data from xbox to xbox) but that's just me.

I used a power inverter to get the 115V out of my 12V car power. I might be able to replace the XBox's power supply with a DC-DC power supply like they make for Carputers since the Xbox IS a computer, but I would still need power for the wireless access point...

I'm switching the dashboard to XBMC because it's a lot cleaner looking and as you said, to allow FTP to FTP transfers. This was just a proof of concept, can I actually get this thing in there and will it work with the head unit, type of thing.

I'll post more pictures when I'm all done with the install.

I remember seeing this a while back:

http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Mods/12V%20Mini%20Xbox.htm

But I guess not much came of it.

And if you haven't tried AvaLaunch, you should try it. If you have 2 xboxes and you have avalaunch running on both. There is a file manager that will automatically see any other xboxes running on the network and will transfer between them very easily. I haven't tried xbmc for xbox to xbox transfer, but I doubt it could be as easy as avalaunch's file browser. Give it a shot if you have 2 xboxes. I used to be a huge evolutionx guy, but once I saw the file browser in avalaunch, I switched.

Also has QUIX for the PC for super easy xbox management and backups.
hey wanna let me get at that HDD full of games...i finally got my chip workin and i need games
I would recommend:
alt.binaries.games.xbox
http://www.newzbin.com/browse/group/p/a ... ames.xbox/

http://www.slyck.com/ng.php

Or once you have your xbox chipped an running avalaunch, just go to someone elses house with the same and transfer away (only if you own the original titles of course).

Yeah the xbox with the Z1 is a cool concept...I can't remember where I saw it, most like cardomain.com, but this guy had a modded xbox with the power button on the controller (I assume not a wireless controller). Hey anyone hook up an old NES in their ride? I wonder how shitty it would be with bumps, I mean remember having to blow in the damn games to get em to play? Just thought it would be kinda cool to be retro with someone in the third seat of my Exp playing duckhunt on the flip down...ha!
I HEART YOU GUYS!! thanks for those sites at least eveyrone here is cool about it xbox-scene.com sucks i got banned many a times for asking for files lol and thats a site dedicated to hackin systems
Well, don't thank us yet, it's pretty hard to get files off newsgroups for a beginner. That link to the newZbin site is just a search engine that will tell you where to get stuff. Read the slyck tutorial to see how these work and find out what your ISP's news server is. I like Giganews
http://www.giganews.com/
or usenet
http://www.usenet.com/
cause my isp's news server sucks. Optimum Online use to rock back in the day. Now a days isps will block the newsgroup port (or at least throttle it way down), which is why a lot of these pay services will allow news group access on port 80. :)

Also you can log into IRC, and request temporary access to xbins ftp server, no games, but lots of files:

If only I even owned a TV anymore that is capable of playing duckhunt :(
Are newer tvs not capable of playing old NES games?
Well, NES games yes. A light gun game? No. Light gun games require a picture tube TV. They will not work on rear projection, front projection, DLP, LCD or plasma... I don't know if I left any out, but anything that uses a light gun, it will only work with pircute tube TV's. Sucks too. I have an original NES and duck hunt and the light gun, but I can't play it anymore. I thought on my 50 inch projection it would be awesome (never miss). But they don't even work.

Check out:

If I'm not mistaken the NES used the "second" method in that site:

The [NES] blanks the screen and then paints the entire screen white. It takes time for the electron beam to trace the entire screen while painting it white. By comparing the signal coming from the photodiode with the horizontal and vertical retrace signals, the computer can detect where the electron beam is on the screen when the photodiode first senses its light. The computer counts the number of microseconds that pass between the time the horizontal and vertical retrace signals start and the time the photodiode first senses light. The number of microseconds tells the computer exactly where on the screen the gun is pointing. If the calculated position and the position of the target match, the computer scores a hit.

Isn't it cool? I have the same setup in my F150. It comes in handy when my wife and daughter want to go shopping. My son and I stay in the truck and play games. He is the back set playing on the overhead monitor and I am in the front playing on the Z1 or he is sitting next to me playing on his mother's visor monitor. I have about 50 XBOX games loaded to the system with a lot of emulators. The cool thing is the way we installed the XBOX under the rear seat. We just went on vacation and when we were at the hotel we just popped out the XBOX and carried it with us inside.
