jerzeygroove
I have a 2006 civic hybrid and i want to get the avic-z1. i'm planning on getting the unit. but i don't have tints and noticed that there is no security feature on the unit (lock code, removable face plate,...) Does anyone have sugestions on how to protect my unit?
tjdehya
I would strongly suggest that you tint your windows before you install it. Well I guess that would depend on where you live and park you car frequently, but he Z1 has absolutely NO SECURITY. So depending on where you live then you will have to determine what level of $ecurity you want to add to your car.
BSecrest
Depending on how the unit installs, if it's recessed or not, you could always fabricate a facade from a photo of your stock h/u. See this thread for some cool ideas... http://www.avic411.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 38&start=0 I scanned in my stock h/u and made a mock-up of it, using photo paper, and I even made 3-d buttons and knobs that I epoxied on to a plastic overlay on top of the photo paper. Looks damn convincing, and it sits about flush to the dash. These people trolling around for radios to steal, are looking for the high end. I don't care where you live, but until every car starts coming with a big 7" clear screen with no buttons on it, any video/nav h/u, would stick out like a sore thumb. hummer_h3
Viper responder alarm! The alarm triggers the remote with a signal that someone is breaking into the car (or just hit it in the parking lot). This as well as the alarm going off usually deters people. They see the blue light, see the stickers and move on to another unsecured vehicle. If they continue to break in, and you are signaled, you can respond and welcome them with a SIG (that's what I do). Two kids last year broke into my Vette, the responder notified me, even though I could not hear the alarm. When I confronted them, one turned on me with a large screwdriver in his hand. He froze when he saw the black object in my hand that was pointed at his chest. Police arrived, and backed up what I told the young man. Turn on someone with a dangerous weapon, and they can shoot. He was lucky. I"m only hoping that his looking down the barrel of a .40 caliber for about five minutes might change his life for the better. Before someone says something, I know criminal laws quite well; part of my job. No you cannot shoot someone for breaking into your car/truck; except in TX (not sure about now, but used to be legal); however, if they turn and move toward you (especially if under 21 feet) with what is considered a dangerous weapon (e.g., large screwdriver, knife, hammer, baseball bat, etc.), you have reasonable fear that your life is in immediate danger, and you can defend your life with deadly force. Been there; done that.

Hodo
As a general rule . . . I'd prefer to let someone steal something rather than shoot them (even if it is "legal" to do so). To each their own.
