ffd173
Hi all. I have a quick question about installation. My unit was installed 4 months ago. It works great. But the installers didn't hook up my speed pulse sensor wire. I know I don't need it, but I also know that it is more accurate that way. What wire in my 05' Explorer do I connect the Z1 to for the speed pulse sensor? :?: Thanks in advance for the help!! 8)
ducatiboy
If it's anything like my 03 Lincoln Aviator (should be, I think they are pretty close) there is a gray wire with a black strip on one of the plugs for the radio. At least my radio came with speed sensitive volume. Just tap off that. If you don't have that connection behind the radio, then you will have to hunt it down somewhere else. The guys here seem to be able to look up wire info. I don't know where else it might be in your Explorer. But I just did a friends F250 and that was on the antilock brake module and it was gray with a black stripe as well. So look behind the radio for that color.
ffd173
Wow. Thanks for the quick reply!! My factory unit DID have speed sensitive volume so I would expect there to be a wire for it behind the radio. With your advice, I now know what color wire to look for. I will post my findings tomorrow after I give it a try. Thanks again!! I appreciate it. 8)
ducatiboy
No problem, yes, if your truck did come with speed sensitive volume, I would guess there is a little square like connector with 20+ positions for wires but mine only had 3 wires. The VSS was gray with a black stripe, the steering wheel controls and the mute wire for the rear sensor (which you can hook to your cell phone mute wire if you want to). ffd173
The main connection from the vehicle that connects to the Z1 has a gray wire w/black stripe, but it is connected straight through to the front speaker connection of the Z1. The all gray wire and the gray wire w/black stripe are for one of the front speakers. I'm going to check one of the other connector blocks behind the radio that are not being used and see if one of those has a gray w/black stripe wire on it. Any other suggestions? Let me know please. Thanks. :( 8)
ducatiboy
No, it's not on the main connector. It's on a separate connector. Not the one with power and speakers. But in general the connector in your car that has the VSS is not used in a general Z1 install. That connector only has backup mute, VSS, and steering wheel control. ffd173
OK. I did the following before I read Ducatiboy's last post. On the main connector from the vehicle, I in fact found the gray wire w/black stripe. The main connector is connted to a Ford wiring adapter which is then connected to the Z1. I followed the factory gray/black wire into the first adapter and it changed to a white wire. I followed it through to the second (and final) adapter which connects to the Z1. It does not go through the second adapter. So I just cut the white wire and attached the pink speed sensor wire from the Z1 and it seems to work great. I started driving and the speed pulse indicator started counting up and the 3D calibration status said "Sensor initializing". I am assuming that I have it hooked up correctly. If anyone doesn't think that I have it correct, please say so. Thanks!  8) 8)
ffd173
I guess I got it right. It now shows my 3D calibration status as 3D Hybrid. Woo, hoo!!!!! I love it when things actually work the way they are supposed to! 8)
ducatiboy
Cool, glad you found the right wire. If you are in 3d hybrid, you are good to go. My descriptions were based off the 03 Aviator (with the assumption that the 05 Explorer would be the same). Guess it was close but not exact. Glad you found it!
