Am I doing something wrong or is this normal? [AVIC D3]

*Already tried the search function, but no real answers yet*

Okay, so I installed the D3 last night and as soon as I turned it on, I noticed that the Navigation was telling me I was in New York (I'm in Northern Virginia)? So I'm a little confused now, I thought the GPS was supposed to already know exactly where you are as soon as you turn the system on? My friend was telling me that I have to set my current location (home)?

Now my question is, is he correct? Do I really have to set the home for this to work? Why doesnt the GPS already know where I am?

I already tried resetting the unit by unplugging the battery and pressing the reset button on the D3 unit itself, but nothing. When I started it up, it still showed New York on the screen.

If anyone had the same issue as me, please help me out.

Thanks in advance!

When the D3 gets power for the first time it has no data from the satellites. It shows as being in NYC because you have the east disk in. If you drive for a mile or so, it will be collecting satellite data and give you the correct position. It retains the satellite data until power is lost due to a battery disconnect or dead battery.

Long winded way of saying it is doing the proper thing, and you need to give it some time to get the data from the satellites. Happened to me last weekend when I had to disconnect the battery. Upon reconnecting the battery and driving a mile or so, the map suddenly shifted to exactly where I was.
