bigl31
Hello all Im new to the site and have had an Avic system of some sort for the past five years. Im in search of a unit I can use on both sides of the pond (US & EU) since Im in the military and now stationed in Europe. I really dont want to buy a new system just because of the maps and Im really hoping one of the new SD mapped systems will do the trick if I have too. Any help would be greatly appricated! CaptainInsaneO
Currently, there are no systems that can be used in both locations. The maps probably won't load on the U.S. version and the radio freqs are different. Also, the DVD region is different between the countries. This sometimes isn't a big deal for some people, but for others it is.
bigl31
Thanks CaptianinsaneO for the reply. I hadnt thought about the region coding or the freq issue. It all makes sense now. I really dont understand why there isnt just one system for worldwide use. It only makes sense from a business view point. One system to R&D, to market, and to manufacture. All I see is "$$$$" savings.
CaptainInsaneO
You hit it on the head. Where we - as consumers - see savings, big business sees lost profit. I'm sure there are other reasons for different countries using different technologies but in the end it mostly does come down to money.
