930BT duplicate song file issues (the dups start with a period & underscore)

Recommended Posts

Problem: Micro SD card with folders of music (greatest hits albums) in .mp3 format. About half of the folders on the card appear on the 930BT screen with duplicate song names, like this:

01 Rockin' Into The Night.mp3

._ 01 Rockin' Into The Night.mp3

02 Lie to Me.mp3

._ 02 Lie to Me.mp3

These duplicate files do not appear on the SD card or when played from iTunes. Need to fix these files from the computer if possible (even if deleting all the files that start with "._" is possible from the head unit in the car the music on the SD card is changed frequently).

Tried all I can think of to get rid of these phantom files (that all start with "._"). Willing to give anything a shot so please post your ideas. Just found 411, thanks in advance for the help guys!

These fantom failes probably came from playlists. Check do you have *.m3a or other playlist files in folders.

Thanks for the response Ralpharn. Unfortunately the only files in each folder are the actual .mp3 files (and the invisible "DS STORE" file that the Mac OS uses).

Still on the hunt with this one!

Can you play these 'phantom'files?

playlist can be not in the folder. As test try to rename folder that has duplicated files. just add something to folder name. Also check does this folder contain anything except mp3 files. Do not forget hidden and system files. %)) Also playlist can be *.m3u

Phantom files cannot be played, they do not exist. It just skips all the phantom duplicates in the song list (the ones starting with a period and underscore) and the message "skipping unplayable files" appears for a couple of seconds at the bottom of the screen.

Renaming the folder is a good idea, but did not resolve the issue.

None of the folders contain anything except the actual .mp3 files (there are no .m3u or any other file types in any of the folders).

Thanks again for the suggestions, would really like to run this glitch down!

Still have not run this issue down (yet). Some of the things I've tried:

- Problem isn't with the folder (same problem with files w/o folder put on root of disk).

- Problem isn't with file names (changed to "test" and "1").

- Problem isn't with the SD card: Reformatted to (FAT32) and tried a different Card (8GB and 16GB capacities).

- Problem isn't invisible files (all folders have same .DSSTORE and Spotlight files but only half have the problem.

- Problem isn't other files (no .3mu playlist files, or any file types except the .mp3 files).

- Changed the names on the disk and each .mp3 file to things like "testsong" and "testdisk".

- Double-checked that these files are not DRM protected.

- Used iTunes to convert the problem .mp3 files to AAC files.

- Used iTunes to convert the problem .mp3 files down to 128 bitrate.

- Used a different converter (not iTunes) to reduce the bitrate to 128.

- Used a file tool to insure the file type/creator/lock/etc info for the problem files is the exact same as non-problem .mp3 files.

- Spent quite a bit of time attempting to locate a solution on the net (Am I really the only one with this issue??).

None of this has eliminated the phantom files. What baffles me is all this music plays fine in iTunes and on other non-Apple mp3 players, and only about half have the problem when displayed on the X930 from an SD Card.

If anyone reading this has potential solutions to try I'd love to give them a go. Thanks!

two additional ideas:

1. what OS you uses on computer used for file upload? sometimes files deleted under Ubuntu visible under Windows.

2. ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags... some files can have them both. But player should handle such things...

Using a Mac Pro running 10.6.8 (most current version of OS X).

All tags are ID3v2. Some have been converted up over the years, though I cannot see where this could cause the issue. All songs are fully tagged and uniform (all have the same tags so they appear correctly on most any mp3 player I've ever used (up until now).

Have ordered a USB flash drive to see if the problem persists when this interface is used, but would still like to determine what causes the phantom files when using the microSD cards as these are preferred storage (smaller & have camera that uses microSD as well).

Those files are created when you copy certain files from a Mac OS X disk to a non-Mac formatted drive, such as your SD card. More info here.

You basically need to delete them on the computer before putting the SD card into your radio. You can search around on the web for links to scripts to delete them. There's also a Mac terminal command called "dot_clean" that may help.

Thanks for the reply joeyalex. Was not my problem directly (deleted files were being recreated by a mirror drive before I was able to eject) but did lead me to a solution. Now the head unit moves from file to file much quicker, the forward/back steering wheel controls work (they didn't anytime they hit a phantom file), and the random works as it should (it would turn off anytime it landed on a random file and had to be turned back on manually). Thanks again for the post!
