Updating Z1 to Z2 with Software

Recommended Posts

Ok I just got my password. It stats that the media will only work with my device number. Now Iam not sure all that seeing that I have a CD and there is no way that it would be made for my unit and only mine. I would think you could upgrade with this disk and just use the password that I got. However the disclaimer says if you send it in for service they will not repair if you have a different device number then the software upgrade in their database.

From the activation site faq:

Q: I receive the message, “Media Number already in-use.â€

A: Please confirm that you are using the correct Media Number located on the Media Number Card bundled with the update disc. Each Media Number is unique and cannot be used to update multiple Pioneer navigation systems.

And from the detailed walkthru:

** NOTE **

This password is unique and can ONLY be

used with this Device Number and Media

Number combination.

You put in the media number and your serial number, this generates a unique password that will only work on your serial numbered unit. And obviously once you register a media number to a serial number you can't use it again. So unless someone comes up with a keygen, a copy of the disc is useless to Z1 Owners.

Ok I see.. the DVD contains passwords for all Z1's made out there and the server knows the passwords which then allows to install... I was thinking once you got the password it would work on all units but it relates to the IS of the Z1... hmmm

Well I am upgrading mine when I get home tonight.. See what happens...

So I don't think the DVD has all the passwords for every Z1 ever made, but I do think that it has an algorithim that can take the password and extract the serial number from it, then it can compare to the serial of your unit and work or not.

So the whole reason you even generate a password (other than just supplying one with the dvd) is so that they can take the media number and your serial number and run it through whatever algorithim that generates the password for just that reason, so you can't pirate.

If someone figured it out they could build a keygen that would allow you to make a valid password based on the media number and your serial.

Well there you go. PM Hyperite your info and let him go to work. It doesn't matter if you give it to him because it only works on your unit. But with enough info he might be able to reverse engineer the algorithm.
