It sounds like you have the icon where you can shut up the guidance voice on the bottom right activated and not in shut up mode. Other than that, yes you have to have a destination selected to get help. If your grayed out, you must not have the bypass set up but if you stop, you should still be able to set a destination and have the lady telling you where to go. That's also the only way to get NavTraffic to warn you of pending slow downs in front of you for re-routing options. It has to know where you're going to help you out.
