This only works if the drive was originally locked with that Xbox..

Oh, and uh.. Howdy... First post... I don't have a Z-1 yet, but am very interested in getting one. I've hacked my share of xbox's and am currently leading an open source project mapping the Chrysler CAN Bus.. ( http://www.canhack.org ).

Anyway..

The procedure posted above by Pulp_Fiction should get you into the drive.. but may not be able to 'unlock' it permanently. Once I get one of these units, I'll try to pop the thing and see if I can help out..

Welcome, I'm new here too.

I confirmed the drive is ATA locked tonight by using a 2.5 to std ide adapter and running atapwd. This confirmed the locked status. I tried the blank and all spaces passwords using this utility with no luck. I have one more utility to try but don't expect much more success with it. From a lot of reading this is a very secure locking solution.
If somebody in the West Los Angeles area wants to take a chance and swap HDD's i'd be interested in knowing if Pioneer locked the drive with a generic pwd or if it's specific to each unit like the Xbox is.
Should we get these unlocked the file system may be very standard after all....

Does anybody know of a utility or procedure I can use once the drive is unlocked to see what the password is? If my procedure above (which will be a pain to setup without uninstalling the unit) is successfull then getting the pwd out is very important. The utilities I've found want the password so you can change the password and none of them so far have the ability to view the current password.

Xbox trick shouldn't work.

At this point until I find a way to retrieve the existing password from a drive that is unlocked I'm not going to work that hard on opening it for just a one time thing. The Z1 appears to relock the drive every time since it locked a previously unlocked drive by just installing it for a minute.

Actually all xboxes lock and unlock drives on the fly like that. And if you hack an xbox, you can use the new bios you hacked into your xbox to lock and unlock hard drives at will. It might work. I don't know if there is a password that has to be cracked (at least if there is the xbox programs used to lock and unlock drives don't seem to need them). The xbox thing might work. I'm still too chicken to try it with my Z1. :)

I work for a large data storage manufacturer in the mid west and we do the same thing to serial ata (sata) drives. We apply a "signature" to the drive and it is married to that particular unit. I don't know about Pioneer, but you can't simply unlock one of our sata drives. You actually need a special file to go out there and do it for you. Unfotunately, when customers do that, they automatically void their warranty and we charge them a butt load to unlock their drive. Food for thought if you have to go back to Pioneer.

very interesting. Thanks for the info. But is the locking the same for SATA as it is for ATA. The drives we are using is are ATA. And the xbox bios's can lock and unlock with ease. Maybe the new SATA drives are harder to lock and unlock. Do you have any experiance with ATA drive locking as well?

My understanding of the xbox locking and unlocking is the software used decyphers or sniffs what the password is while the xbox is performing the unlock. Since each xbox has a different password based on the serial number of the unit discovering the formula or a method to sniff the password is all they had to do. It does not use a univeral solution to break into the drive. Since I now have a Z1 locked drive i have no issues with loading it into my xbox and seeing what it will do with it.

yeah the xbox has the serial in the eeprom.

SATA is still basically ATA the transmission is the main difference.

If i had a Z1 i'd open up the Z1 , boot it up next to a PC and swap the cable after its booted and unlocked the drive.

Bingo... That's the only way your going to get into the drive... The only other problem is that the drives power is built into the main ribbon cable connector ... ( if it's a laptop HD, which I'm certain it is.. ). So, you'd actually have to modify some sort of cable adapter / power splitter to be able to keep power on the drive during the whole process...

im going to see if i can find a drivelock cracker of some sort burned 9 cds worth of mp3s into cd format only to have the z1 kick me back a recording error......... gotta find a way to load mp3s directly

The Z1 runs Microsoft Windows Automotive, which is based on Windows CE.NET.

I don't know anything about the drive format (I don't even have a unit yet), but this page:

includes info for developers looking to write apps for MWA. Presumably someone could download CE.NET (plus any special MWA SDKs) to gain access to the Z1 hard drive (and maybe write some add-on apps). I guess you'd still need to get past the ATA lock, unless it's a documented part of MWA/CE.NET.

yea this definitely needs to be cracked! It sucks that we can only rip mp3s from cds and we dont even know thebitrate. IT would make much more sense to just use those 10 gigs how we want!

Unless you migrated the existing data to a larger HD.

I doubt thats possible but it would be very easy to hack an xbox and hook it up to the AV inputs on the Z1 and use a remote to address it.

anyone has an spare z1 hdd? maybe we can foward it to guys at high tech blog and see if anyone can hack it? websites like engadget or gizmodo, they have millions of reader and i'm sure they will be able to find someone who's able to crack it.... but if it stays in this forum chances are we are stuck with 10gb of music.
