I'm beginning to think that Apple expects everybody to use Airplay to send video. I have doubts now that the new connector is even capable of sending video out.

I googled "Airplay via bluetooth" and there is more out there to read. it seems possible, so perhaps a new Firmware update can let the iPhone see the Appradio as an airplay device in order to transmit video. I bet we'd still have to use the provided cable in order to retain touchscreen functionality.

Even if Pioneer decided it was worth it to try and do Airplay via BT, its going to take them MONTHS. The iPhone 5 is here now. Not many are going to wait that long to upgrade the device they use the most... even more than their car stereo. They are going to upgrade the phone and seek another option in the car.

I just wish there was more information to make a better educated guess.... even if its a $30 or $40 adapter/cable... its still a gamble and most likely a good portion of the stereo is going to be obsolete. So why even hang on to the AppRadio? Might as well go to something that works 100% even if it does not have the fancy AppMode.

Its just frustrating because I picked up the AR2 a week after the US launch. I worked through LOTS of issues. Pandora Black Screens. AppRadio App not "pairing". AppMode App launching the embedded Pandora App randomly. It took LOTS of hours on the phone with Pioneer to work through these issues. I reset my iPhone, restored from iCloud, even got a warranty swap out from Apple. Best Buy even swapped the AR2 for another unit after witnessing the issues. It finally works as intended and very reliably. Now I have to weigh the blood sweat and tears against the desire to upgrade the device that I use the most in my life.

@djchad72 - Thanks. I'll read up on their facebook page.

@ov3n - I too plan to get an iPhone 5 regardless. Is tethering only for jailbroken phones? If there is no workable solution I will probably just get a new radio altogether. I miss bluetooth streaming.

Tethering is not only for jailbroken phones. Any of verizon's new plans and at&t's 2gb+ shared plans include tethering. Not sure about Sprint.

There is a little hope, though. MacRumors and TheVerge are reporting that Apple says an adaptor will be out in the near future that is capable of HDMI and VGA out.

Ya I have an iPhone 4 that is mine and use it only for work. So may keep it in vehicle but Bluetooth my 5 for calls. When you say tether your 5 to your 4, what does that entail and provide you?

Basically you set your iPhone 5 up as a wifi personal hotspot, and then use your iphone 4 to connect to it. That basically acts as a wifi connection for your iPhone 4, giving you access to maps/other applications that use data.

Then just hook up your iPhone 5 via bluetooth for your hands-free calling

It basically means you use your iphone 4 with the data from your iPhone 5

Quick copy paste from Mike´s Topic since i´m not so sure if it belongs there.

Just a crazy thought. I realy wounder what will happen if u get the Iphone 5 hooked up to the HDMI Port of the Appradio. That could be very well a sollution to alot of Problems. HDMI is fully digital (correct me if i´m wrong). To take this a litte further, I wonder if we would be able to mirror the hole phone onto the Appradio2 via HDMI. It has been done with XBoxes, etc,.. over at XDA Developers they just managed to mirror Android Phones though the HDMI Port.

Anyone any thoughts on that ??

The only problem with that would be your throwing away the touch screen.

Why is that ? Of Course there would be some adaption needed to run the Iphone through the HDMI Port but the Android Phones run through it and dont loose the Touchscreen. At least it might be a patch option for Pioneer to change the connection from the Iphone Port to the HDMI Port. I am not a Programmer so I wouldnt know how much work that means.

Android devices support SPP via Bluetooth that give them Serial Port Protocol control. As far as most can tell, iOS does not support SPP.

From Pioneer:

For owners of current AppRadio 2, AppRadio, and Advanced App Mode products*, please read the following important update:

Your Pioneer product is compatible with iOS 6 installed on the iPhone 4S or iPhone 4.

At this time, two operational issues, listed below, have been identified. To resolve these issues, both the Pioneer AppRadio app and each compatible third-party AppRadio app require an update.

1.) Apps cannot be successfully launched from the AppRadio screen.

2.) Pinch to zoom is disabled.

As of September 18, 2012, an updated Pioneer AppRadio app has been submitted to the App Store for review. We will post more information when this app is available in the App Store. The developers of compatible third-party AppRadio apps are also currently working to update their respective apps. The update and submission process may vary for each compatible third-party AppRadio app.

We will continue to post updates regarding app availability.

* Model numbers vary by region. Applicable U.S. models are as follows: SPH-DA100, SPH-DA02, SPH-DA01, AVIC-Z140BH, AVIC-X940BT, AVH-P8400BH

Right.. So what about the iPhone 5...

Posted Sep 23, 2012 · 00:44 UTC#43

It's not going to work (yet). Once my lightning-30pin adaptor arrives, I'll prove it to you. :)

Down the road, when Apple releases their hdmi and vga adaptors, we may be able to get it operational.. but until that happens, nobody will know.

Control does not happen via HDMI with Android it's over the SPP Bluetooth protocol. IOS does not support SPP. So it would require q whole other method to control apps via the touch screen.

Thinking reverse airplay

Posted Sep 24, 2012 · 01:21 UTC#47

The HDMI or VGA adapter will likely still use the USB portion for control as it does now but use the HDMI or VGA for video only in the same way the unit and previous iDevices use the separate A/V in for now.

Maybe Pioneer will release a new cable and firmware to work with the usb part of the input lead to our Appradio ?
