So yeah, you'll have to unlock the drive, disable security, and try imaging again. Dunno what you did wrong, but the walkthrough is pretty easy to foolow.

Posted Jul 25, 2008 · 23:47 UTC#352

ok, thaks, will try it again. Also, do I need to partition the drive or just do a direct restore from the wizard, I don't care about the actual size of the drive, I don't put any songs on the thing. Just wan the z3 image - I am also bored tonight so have plenty of time :)

Posted Jul 26, 2008 · 01:05 UTC#353

nope, restoring the image will use the default partition sizes.

OK - got the image on, thanks for your help. Had to unlock the drive and disable the security. Also had to go and by a connector as the one I used earlier was from work.. of course I was in a hurry and there was only one store near me and charged me $20 - oh well.

So these are my questions now:

When I put the drive in, it booted up and ran through some configuration, everything booted up fine for about 5 minutes and then rebooted again. I was adding some stuff (phone numbers etc) and it rebooted again. I left it for the night, drove for about half an hour this morning and all was good. Later on, went for another drive, same thing again, rebooted. Any ideas on that? The drive is a Fujitsu MHT2040AH.

Also, was thinking, if I can do this right, I will just redo my original drive but I was wondering if it is possible to change the boot screen (splash screen) to something else and also is it possible to add pictures for the phone book when a friend calls? If so, where would I add them and what size would they need to be.

Thanks again for your help.

Sorry, just found the posting on the splash screen, but nothing on the phone book pictures, any ideas on that, also how about adding phone book entries while it is on the bench, takes forever in the car.

You'll get rebooting issues with any drive other than the few Toshibas mentioned in this and other threads.

I don't think there's a way to add phone numbers directly to the drive.

You can add pictures from a CD.

Thanks Hyperite

I really appreciate all your help with everything. You are a wealth of information and I would be lost without this forum. I would aslo be a little richer :) Spending all this money on the system and every single feature it has to offer. Definitely worth it and also challenging. I guess I will have to try and get a Toshiba drive. I am almost tempted to just use my original drive for the Z3 image. Just scared of messing it up completely. I don't have anything on the drive other than phone numbers and a few saved directions - not like I can't put them on again.

I suppose if I could do it to a different drive, I could do it to my original.

Again, thanks for the help and to everyone else on this forum.

I am decent at computers but I didnt get it to work.

I restored the first 2 partitions per the instructions, but the last 2 werent on the instructions. I cant read the drive now, I assume it has been locked out?

The instructions seemed easy enough, really easy.

Pioneer says hdd unusable.

any help is appreciated.

I have the 80 gb toshiba.

thank you for any replies.

Did you disable security on the drive before you put it in the Z?

If not, you will have to pay to have it unlocked.

For unlocking your 80GB drive it will cost you about $10 if you go to http://www.hddunlock.com/

Once you get the drive unlocked, be sure to first DISABLE SECURITY, then restore ALL of the partitions to it. Then it should work.

Assuming that you are using Acronis to do the restore, you should also be able to expand the "MUSIC" partition (the 3rd partition) to take advantage of the extra space your drive has.

Got the .torrent file, borrowed an IDE adapter from my IT friend, paid the $4.95 unlock fee, unlocked and installed the partitions. Works perfectly!

My Z1 is now a Z3! Awesome!

Also on a side note. I was able to connect my laptop IDE adapter without removing the hard drive from the caddy. If you don't plug it in all the way, it doesn't interfere, at least not on my adapter anyway. Thanks for the great info!

I think that is the $5 unlock program.

The program is a free download, but you have to pay $5 for the code to unlock your HDD.

I have a 2 wire bypassed Z1 that has never been updated or had a map upgrade.

I'm willing to spend the $$$ for a Z3 upgrade disk.

Is it possible to upgrade the bypassed Z1 to a Z3 without doing the disc image stuff and maintaining the bypass?

My apologies if this has already been covered - I just can't seem to find the details using the search engine, so if someone can post a link to my answer I would be very grateful.

Thanks.

You can buy a pre-imaged hard drive and just swap it out. Look for the garretoomey threads or just PM him.

Following this guide, I was able to remove my AVIC-Z1 HDD, unlock it, disable security, and load the new Z3 image on w/o issues.

I really only had two issues, both which I was able to overcome.

1) The motherboard of the PC I used to unlock the drive only had one IDE channel, so I was unable to put the drive as master on the secondary IDE channel. It made no difference. The program found and unlocked the drive as master on the primary channel. Not sure if the guide is wrong, or what.

2) I did not have a floppy drive installed to run MHDD. Luckily, I was able to find one a and install it to accomplish the security disable. I would like to see a bootable CD-ROM of MHDD that would work. I actually had one from a while back, but the PC would not boot off it, for some reason. Browsing the CD in Windows, I only found a text file that said "Boot from this CD".

Another note, I used the $7 Rosewill adapter from NewEgg, which worked just fine. You need to be incredibly careful not to install either the adapter, or the drive backwards. There are arrows to indicate where the adapter plugs into the cable, but the rest is guessing, as my drive had no mark on it. I figured it out using an old 20GB laptop HDD and guessed right.

Also, I had a bear of a time finding an IDE cable that did not have a center pin on each end blocked off. The Rosewill adapter had all 40 pins present.

I think that is the $5 unlock program.

You were correct. The program required a $5 license, which I purchased via PayPal. It worked perfectly.

I would like to thank everyone that makes this upgrade possible. I did the Z1 to Z2 upgrade earlier this year. I just completed the Z2 to Z3 upgrade while preserving my phone book and keeping my music. Everything went well and is working fine thanks to the great instructions on the site. FYI, I kept my original Z1 hard drive and used a new one for both upgrades. I used a Hitachi hard drive, model DK23FB60. I have been using this drive for the last 6 months with no problems (rebooting, freezing, etc.) I would recommend this drive if you cannot locate a Toshiba drive.

Just wanted to post a word of thanks for everyone who made the Z3 upgrade possible! Torrents, step by step instructions, preloaded hard drives... you guys are awesome!

I just finished upgrading my Z2 =>Z3 and it works perfectly (w/the bypass). Many thanks especially to Garret helping out with my very inexperienced questions.

Cheers!

is this the same as just using the disc Pioneer CNDV-800HD? for a z2 to z3?

has anyone seen any isos out there?

Posted Oct 10, 2008 · 16:22 UTC#373

ISO images of the update dvd will not work. You will need a registration code that is tied to the serial number of your Z in order to use the update disc.

You need to download and install directly to a HDD, or get a preconfigured one.

I have a quick question. Will doing this upgrade for my Z1 to a Z3 make the Ipod search feature work faster?? And will the bluetooth work any better?

Posted Oct 13, 2008 · 14:51 UTC#375

I just wanted to say Thank You to all the nicely detailed methods listed to perform the upgrade. I decided to take a safer route and use a different drive for the upgrade, so I could hold on to the original drive in case I had problems. A couple of things I wanted to note:

1. Like a few others on the forum, I installed my replacement drive into a notebook and was able to successfully disable the security lock on the drive via MHDD. After setting the option I gave it a reboot and double-checked. Sure enough it kept the setting.

2. Replacing the drive is actually an easier path and allows for some insurance should problems arise. However, it does suck to lose all of your addresses and phone book. I'm still glad I went with this method, though.

The icing on the cake for this upgrade is that my street is actually listed on the map for the Z3! WOO HOO!
