If you want to be able to swap the drive back and forth, just unlock it, or buy a drive that is already unlocked. An unlocked drive will work in any Z.

If you unlock a drive, remember to disable ATA security!

The unit will lock any drive that has ATA security enabled (default on most drives).

It´s all described in detail in this thread: viewtopic.php?t=9446

ok, thx alot guys, seems like this is not as ez as i thought it would be, lol. so i guess the unit it self will store the password that is assigned to the HDD when the unit is turned off, and enter the same password to unlock the HDD at pwr-up. since i already have the Z3 HDD out and there is no harm to try swapping it over to the Z1, i guess i will try it first.

And i expect the result is not gonna be possitive, i read the thread on how to upgrade, but if i have a factory Z3 HDD already, does it mean all i needa to is to get a IDE adaptor, then hook it up to my computer, and have it unlocked thru " Download, install and purchase one-time license for HDD Unlock Wizard ($4.97 for a 40Gb Drive) if you don't care about the data on your current drive:http://www.hddunlock.com/ ", it specially stated " only if u dun care losing the data, i guess all i lose it the address and songs, but not the z3 defualt data, right, and is this the cheapest and best way to do the upgrade then. i guess i wont be able to diable the ATA lucking with this unlock Wizard.

*** i just found out the stock Z3 HDD is Toshiba MK4036GACE, so it's 40G, not 30G, thus there is a hardware difference betwwen Z1,Z2 and Z3.

The 5 dollar unlocking software will erase the entire drive..!

The 43 dollar unlocking software will leave the data on the drive as it was before unlocking.

If you want to upgrade your Z1´s firmware/maps, and don´t care about the music on it, then you can unlock the Z1 drive with the 5 dollar software leaving the drive blank (disable security if you unlock). After that you can follow the instructions and download a Z3 image.

If you have a lot of music on your Z3 that you would like to have on your Z1, then you can unlock the Z3 drive with the 43 dollar unlocking software (disable security), unlock the Z1 drive with the 5 dollar software (disable security), and copy the Z3 data from your Z3 hard drive onto the Z1 drive. The music partition needs to be smaller on the 30GB drive so that the other partitions can be copied exactly like they are.

If your Z3 drive is 40GB and you have less than 50% free space, then you (have a lot of music) will have to check that the data will fit. It is all or nothing with the music data, but you can delete some CDs to be able to transfer it to the smaller drive.

Good luck!

The drive in the Z3 is labeled as a Toshiba MK4036GACE, but it is ONLY a 30gb drive. I have analyzed the drive, and it can not be used as a 40gb drive. All parameters are the same ar the 30gb GACE drive. Trust me on this one... No difference between Z1, Z2, and Z3.

DO NOT use the $5 unlocking service unless you have the Z3 image on hand. Get it downloaded first, before wiping the drive.

I agree. That was a much better order. Download first, then erase-unlock:)

Hi Guys, silly question...

I have had my Z1 for a while now, and going to take a chance and do the upgrade myself.

One thing I noticed is that peopel are havign a hard time to remove the 4 screws for the tray. Does this tray have to be removed in order to hook up the IDE adapter? My IDE cable in my desktop is long enough that I just sit the drive next to it...

Thanks!

Posted Jun 30, 2009 · 22:11 UTC#411

It doesn´t need to come off:) Only if you can´t connect the adapter or are changing the drive. Good luck! You should be fine.

The screws in general only strip if you are not careful and apply a little downward pressure with the correct size screwdriver. I accidentally stripped one screw, but I took a fine saw and made a groove on the screw, so I could unscrew it with a flat screwdriver.

I have the 14 tib images. I can seed them if.....

Someone tells me how. I know how to download a torrent, but I've never posted one.

Also, I am in need of the upgrade for the xm logos and gracenote database. When I search for "xm" in the forum, I get no hits. I also can't seem to find anyone posting how to get the upgrade, only that there is one. anyone know if this upgrade for the XM shows all the new Sirius stuff?

I can be reached @ [email protected]

One last thing... why aren't these files posted to the net anymore? I haven't the energy to search why on the forums....

Found the XM upgrade forum. Why it doesn't come up when you search "xm" is beyond me, but oh well....

Is anyone willing to hook my Z1 up if I pull it out and send it to them???

Posted Jul 16, 2009 · 10:24 UTC#415

There seems to be an firmware update for the Z3 in the Pioneer website, version number 3.100400. I have a Z1 that has been upgraded to a Z3. I was wondering if anyone experienced any adverse affect from this update. The current version in my Z1 is 3.100200. I think, the only reason for this update is to be able to upgrade to the latest gracenote version. I just want to make sure before I update it. The latest version for the Gracenote is 09-01-0020. Also, is there any newer update for the bluetooth nd-bt1? Thanks in advance.

There are no additional firmware upgrades available beyond Z3 for BT, etc. The latest firmware upgrade is only for gracenotes. Your Z does not require the firmware upgrade in order to upload the latest gracenotes database. Just burn it using nero and put the disc in the Z.

Can the new Pioneer Z3 firmware version number 3.100400 simply be loaded onto a Z1 to upgrade it to Z3?

Posted Jul 22, 2009 · 16:19 UTC#419

You don't need to do the firmware upgrade. The only thing the firmware upgrade 'fixes' is the ability to use Gracenotes cd updates. If your Z3 upgrade came from this site (or me), then your Z1 upgraded to Z3 will already be able to accept gracenotes updates. "If it ain't broke, then don't fix it" :)

Looks like i messed up. I now have a z3 HD in my z1 that was originally bypassed with the ducati device that I purchased through this forum years ago. Now even with my parking break on, I can not plan a route or watch videos. My Jetta GLI and Z3 is now just a music player with a map.

what do i do now?

You have 2 options.

1) Do the 2 wire bypass for full functionality all the time.

2) Properly connect your parking brake according to the installation manual. You will only have full functionality when the brake is on.

Posted Aug 18, 2009 · 21:16 UTC#422

So the ducati bypass is no longer valid at all? If that was the original install method, can the two wire bypass still be done? If so, how long does it take? Where is the best sticky so I can get this done.

Garrett, are you local to Laurel/College Park MD? I would be willing to pay for u to do the two wire bypass. Thanks.

Also, now the the HD is Z3 image, the "flashing" bypass no longer works, which means the adapter i purchased no longer works? The only option to have full functionality all the time is to pull out headunit and do 2wire bypass?

Posted Aug 18, 2009 · 21:25 UTC#424

Will I have to purchase anything else now?!

Correct, ducati flasher will no longer work at all. You can remove it, or leave it in. Makes no difference. If you remove it, you will have a cleaner install. I am not local to MD. I live in TX.

For instructions for the 2 wire bypass. Go to the Z series hacks forum, and look at the sticky posts at the top. Ducatiboy has a link for the 2 wire bypass.
