No, I have not tried a 80r disc or upgraded to the 40r yet. I first need to reinstall everything back into my car. I had to leave for a year and was unsure if I was going to sell my car, so I uninstalled the unit and wiring. I hope to get time tomorrow to install everything again.

I ordered a used avic-9dvd off of ebay that I can use as a test unit and take apart if need be. I also finally found a brand new CD-R11 remote on ebay for $35 shipped. I did not have the remote that would allow me to enter into the service menu, so this one will allow me to do that.

When I get the system installed I will then make a 80r disc to try. At first I will remove the POI and extra stuff to get the size of the file down to fit on standard dvd+r disc. If all works out well then I will just buy a pcmcia memory card adapter and 16gb memory card instead of wasting my money on dvd+r DL disc’s. With the memory card, I can also do a system file dump on the system and compare it between the different models that I have.

What is so annoying about opening the avh-P6400cd? I have the same unit and just keep it open at all times.

You are of course assuming that the unit can boot and completely use the pccard slot. :)

I don't like having a bright display on when I'm driving at night and would prefer a little digital display instead. But that is just me.

Just a little update: I got everything install and got the new remote in the mail. I put together a regular dvd+r 80r disc and installed it in the system and it loaded the file system and rebooted, but then after the new boot screen appeared it said “this is inappropriate disc.” In the service menu it had all of the updated information, so the update took. I tried with a few different file structures of the 80r but all ended up saying the same inappropriate disc. I think that it does not like the standard dvd’s with the mapping system all hacked up to save space. :( After reading about the failed attempt of using the memory card system to boot in this thread http://avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=17576&start=15 , I will just have to go to the store tomorrow and get some dvd+r dl disc’s to get this to work. :x

Have you tried holding down the “w” key on the screen for 5 sec. to adjust the dimmer, because you can make it pretty dark?

Posted Oct 02, 2009 · 17:32 UTC#29

I didn't know about the w key. I will try that. I purchased this car with all this stuff already wired and I've already had to fix a lot of things with the install. The illumination wire isn't hooked up either so at night its a daylight display. I'll get to fixing that soon. I have this installed an a 1993 Toyota MR2 Turbo. The original installers had the wire harnesses run of the engine top and exhaust manifold. They didn't last long that way. HAH

Btw, what minimal install did you do? the alldata.kwi itself is 3.1GB and the idx directory is 4.1G I'm guessing you did it w/o the idx directory.

Ya, sounds like someone did a hack backyard install.

Here is the IDX file system that I used so that I could just burn on a standard dvd to test, this is from the 90mt east

The problem that I was having with the inappropriate disk was because I forgot to change the disc version to the 40r version. Once I figured that out it was not hard at all to setup the 90R disk. I was able to upgrade from the CNDV-21 to the CNDV-90r.

From the 90mt root folder I took

alldata.kwi dvi.dat

indexdat.kwi

kgrpdat.kwi

landmark.kwi

metadata.kwi

rdstmc.kwp

region.kwi

stocks.txt

From the 40r root folder I took

eu010apl

uc010dat.esp .fra .usa

uc010sys.esp .fra .usa

uc010gps

uczparts

For the bg root folder I used all of the 40r plus added the "sensor" files and the 2009 bgopen

For the pim folder inside of the bg folder I took everything that was not already in the folder from the 90mt pim, pim2din, pim529 90mt bg2 folder pim, pim2din

For the pimanime inside of the bg folder I took everthing that was not already in the folder from the 90mt pimanim2, pimanime 90mt bg2 pimanim2, pimanime

For the IDX folder I took everything from the 90mt

I had to create the "marktp" folder in the 90r and took everything from the 40r marktp folder, nothing from the 90mt

The point\sound folder I kept from the 90mt

The sky folder I kept from the 90mt

The snddata folder I kept from the 90mt

I had to create the "voice" folder and took the uc010vdv.esp .fra .usa from the 80mt voicetp folder

This is my system version information for a avic-80dvd from the service menu

Everything seems to be working right. Have you noticed any problems at all? The new mapping system picked up on some new roads that we have in town.

I am still going to try to get the file system on a flash drive because I don't know for sure if the guy in that post I linked to in my last post did everything right. I am not sure if he let the unit format the flash drive, as shown in the service manual, before he added the file system. If he did not do this, I think the flash drive would have hidden windows boot system files on it that might stop it from working on the navigation unit.

Interesting how your system boot and drive core are newer and my drive app is newer. I was curious what would happen if you used newer voice files, if they actually got used at all.

Great info!

Did anyone figure out how to disable the startup warning screen yet?

Thanks!

Posted Oct 10, 2009 · 22:10 UTC#33

Press the OK button.

Disabling the startup screen is very low priority when keeping just the nav data up to date is a chore. I'm sure it can be done by modifying the operating system code.

The versions are different because of the different models. From what I can tell the OS, gps, application, and language data are the only stuff to change with the system updates.

I have not driven much, but the turn by turn directions seem to be working 100% with the updated voice files.

Not much has changed on my end; I have only added the avic-9dvd into the system. At this point I am kind of waiting to see what will happen with a SD card adapter. I have done some research on the Mercedes-Benz forum about what SD card adapter has worked in their factory navigation systems. The avic and from what I can tell most factory navigations use the Denso company for the navigation unit, so I figured if a SD card adapter works on their units it might work on ours. I have gone ahead and ordered the adapter that they recommend, but it is coming from Hong Kong and can take up to 14 days to get here.

One other problem that I have been having is with my avh-p6400cd. Awhile back, for about a week my unit had trouble closing, I would have to guide it down. The other day while I was installing the avic-9dvd, before I put both units into the dash I checked to see if the avic-9dvd was working. When the avh opened all seemed fine, but when I put it down I heard grinding. Now the unit will not go down at all without my assistance. I have gotten my hands on the service manual so that I can order the gears and replace them. So now I have to take out the avh again to take it apart and find out what gears I need to order, at least most of them seem to be only $2.50 each. Here is a link to the service manual just in case you ever have a problem.

No, I have not figured that out yet. I have just started looking into it and already made myself a lot of coasters. I have found the wording for the warning in the UC010DAT.USA file, but not the programming command that calls for it. It seems that once I change anything in the dat, sys, or apl files the system does not like the disc and asks for the appropriate disc upon a restart. The hard drive navigation systems have the warning located in the apl directory. I have not been able to locate it, so I don’t know if it is in the alldate.wki, sys, dat, apl, or in the file system on the unit its self. Once I get a working SD card adapter and do a file system dump on the unit, I might be able to locate it. Also, if I can get a SD card adapter that will load the system on it I will not have to go through so many discs. I have been using my test version that fits on standard dvd+r discs so that I am not wasting pricey dvd+r DL discs. I have been able to drive around town without any problems in the mapping system, the POI and telephone information was the main stuff that I removed from the IDX folder.

Here is a link to the east IDX folder that I use to slim down the CNDV-90r to fit on a standard dvd+r disc for testing if anyone wants to help out in the testing.

I'll be testing out a version of the CNDV-90R-East shortly. I'm trying to take as much as possible from the 80MT and 90MT and then overlay the needed pieces from 40R.

POINT directory is same on 90MTE and 40RE

SKY directory is same on 90MTE and 40RE

MARKTP - doesn't exist on 90MTE, took it from 80MTE. did not use 40RE as I did on 80R -<< check works -- I reverted to using the marktp from 40RE as I had some graphic issues-- but that might be because of a messed up dvi.dat file. Note sure. My 70RE used the updated files from 70MTE. Test again when 100MTE comes out.

SNDDATA - used 40RE on 70R

Used the 040snd only files from 90MTE. 80MTE and 90MTE have same uc040snd files.

801e30abe6c0055450f4071c5d17e65d ../../90MTE/snddata/uc040snd.esp

84932743b7906a01806fed0437c4c8ff ../../90MTE/snddata/uc040snd.fra

6a930a714590db2acd0c2dac0324ff01 ../../90MTE/snddata/uc040snd.usa

VOICE - used the 80MTE voicetp uc010vdc* files.

701 and 801 don't have VOICE dir, they have VOICETP dir and the files differ between 70MTE and 80MTE.

IDX - took entire 90MTE tree, no merge

BG - changes and merges

90MTE and 80MTE are identical in bg and bg2 except the bgopen files

copy 90MTE bg directory to 90R

copy 40E to 90R dir

took 40E bg/*.hcs files

Took all the 90MTE /bg/pim529/ files to 90RE/bg/pim/ (pim529 are idential to 40RE bg/pim/*.pim files except 90MTE has two additional *2.pim files.

bg/pinanime/*, 40RE only has city file (identical), but I copied them from 90MTE

15ca2d54697c1ffdb90af0a7dedc7da1 city.pim

be7d57ee4f6d0bce21634c285d962ca7 skyline.pim

cdc53dd8ee9ccfac3ac0ce893d9088fd twilight.pim

remove the pim529 directory

in root:

copy all from 40RE

uc010*

ucz*

for my 2nd try on 90RE I used the ucz files from 90MTE.. apparently this is how I did the 70R - confirmed, using 90MTE ucz files.

eu*

These files are identical on 80MTE and 40R, 90MTE doesn't have *10* files.

From 90MTE:

alldata.kwi indexdat.kwi kgrpdat.kwi landmark.kwi metadata.kwi rdstmc.kwp region.kwi

Or if you are lazy, just take the IDX directory and the files just above and put them on a 40R and you are golden.

For the CNDV-100R I think I will try to get the system to boot off flash.

Since 8GB and 16GB flash card are dirt cheap now...

While poking around the diagnostics menus on the AVIC-90DVD, I backed up the SRAM to the flash card.

I then looked at that binary file and it seems to be some sort of DOS file system... even my Unix system thinks so:

file FILE000.RAM

FILE000.RAM: x86 boot sector; partition 4: ID=0x49, active, starthead 1, startsector 1394627663, 21337 sectors, Microsoft Windows 98 Bootloader, code offset 0x3e, OEM-ID "PIONAV03", FAT 1, root entries 64, sectors 440 (volumes <=32 MB) , sectors/FAT 2, serial number 0x3d668ea2, unlabeled, FAT (12 bit)

Hmmm... this is only a 220K file and I think the SRAM is limited to 256K (from the diag menu), but the specs at Pioneer say this has a 32MB SRAM system 32MB is a lot of space to stuff a nice OS. hmmm..

Well, I copied the 40r basic stuff to a 48mb flash card. Then shoved in the 100MTE disc and presto it all works. It seems to look for needed files off the DVD drive first then if it can't find them will look for them on the flash card. Since the 100MT disc no longer has OS files for the avic 80/90 DVDs it looked to the flash card to find them. What led me to that was on occasion the DVD drive won't read a disc and says to insert the appropriate one. Well, last time it started acting up like that I put in the flash card and it booted up the old screens from 2005 with no map data.

What's this mean? That means all of you people with avic 80/90 NAV systems just need to copy off some files from your last working Nav disc to a flash card then use the latest cndv-100mt discs and you have updated maps. Now I think the last touch screen code was on the 80MT and the last remote control code was 40R. Those of you with remote control units don't put anything in other than the latest 100 or your system will be upgraded to touch code. 90MT might work too, but I haven't checked to see if the OS for the avic 80/90 is still on there.

Hmm anyone want to give me a old touch screen head unit so I can get rid of this remote control system? :)
