My guess would be that your hard drive has the map update but not the full Z3 update. I think you can buy a disc to update the map in older versions. A whole week, huh... unless your upstream is around 1MB/s, that's not gonna cut it We've already got a distribution method, we're all just waiting on an image. A whole week of initial seeding would be plenty and the offer is very much appreciated. The way torrents work, anyone downloading during that week will in turn be seeding, so that by the end of that week there will probably be a few dozen seeders and the download would be faster and more efficient than ever. All this is hypothetic however until someone donates that image.

It's good that it's unlocked. This enables you to get into this drive by hooking it up to a PC, and make changes to the banner and splash screens. You can also upgrade this drive to a newer versions when it becomes available. The new Z3 is just hitting the stores and will probably again have SLIGHT improvements. It's my understanding that TELEATLAS is still the supplier of the mapping software and I therefore don't have high expectations.

Any Toshiba MK****GAX IDE/EIDE (5400rpm) hard drive will work great. You can fill in the first two blanks with 40, 60 or 80 for the corresponding gigs. The remaining two blanks are usually 19 or 26. Toshiba MK****GAS will also work but are slower at 4200 rpm. Seek time is the same 12ms for both types.

Yes, you would need to have your HDD unlocked but that costs almost as much as a new HDD. http://avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3568 The new HDD would be, let's say, 60gig (Toshiba!) and then give you the extra gig for music storage. You'd have to put the Z2 image on that new drive, and while you're doing that you can remove or replace the existing splash screen and banner screen. No need to get on the bandwagon. If you're happy with the directions you're getting, -enjoy!! But if you want to do a little testing, then go to Google Maps and compare the routing there with the routing that Avic gives you. Google routes identical to Garmin and Magellan on all the routes that I compared. The routes are almost always optimal. Below is a drive I do regularly and just for the hell of it I recently went the way Avic told me to go. Man, if it has NAVTEQ than it's the one for me. My Z2s maps are not even close to some details shown in a Garmin Nuvi and the Routing in the Nuvi is 10 times better. NAVTEQ is guaranteed to make it a better Navigation system and I can live with whatever other shortcomings the Pana has.

Ok buddy, you sure got this one wrong. It definately is Pioneers fault that they chose Tele Nav to provide the mapping for Pioneer. When I spend $1800 on a Pioneer I don't have a choice over who's mapping I buy with it. Pioneer made that choice. Good thing I've got that VW diesel which will last a long time because Google and VW have bonded to provide true 3D mapping just the way you can see it on Google earth. Can't wait to put one of those babies into my Passat.

I'm not surprised that the Magellan is better than is the Z2 in the navigation dept. I'm driving around in rental cars right now with a little portable Garmin and discovered that I can actually trust the routing almost totally which would be a recipe for disaster with the Z2 (or any other Avic). Your voice command info is very interesting as the Garmin that I have does not have that. Will have to see if Garmin has that or might have to get that Megellan 4250 instead.

Funny you should ask. I have a Z1 (now upgraded to Z2) in my car at home. Currently I'm spending 3 weeks in rental cars and had gotten myself a Garmin for that purpose. That little $250 Garmin is 10 times better when it comes to routing than is the Z2. I have never trusted the Z2 and have always checked and printed routing from maps.live or maps.google before going on my regular trips. With the Garmin I've stopped doing that. Pioneer has a loooong way to go before they catch up. The maps are mostly good, but in Canada when I get away from the bigger cities, detail falls off greatly. Lakes

You can use either the 1000 x 480 or 500 x 240. Both work fine. The larger image gives you more pixels to work with and you can always resize to 500 x 240 before saving if you like to make it a smaller file.
