  1. I've got an avic-8000nex which has been acting up lately. The "ipod1" input doesn't work any more, only ipod 2. I primarily use it with my iPhone, and while I can still use it as ipod 2 I lose an awful lot of functionality if I can't use the iPod1 port anymore. It's a fairly complex build, with metra adapters for the steering wheel buttons and the antenna, along with an external amp and a backup camera. Could I buy an avic-w8600nex and swap it in, keeping all of the rest of the build? Would the existing metra adapters be likely to work with the newer head unit? Thanks, J
  2. I was about ready to give up on my AVIC-NEX8000. It almost never connects to my phone, via the wired cradle. I can only get it to work by turning the car off and back on 5 or 10 times. It does work with bluetooth, but you lose almost all of the functionality. Also, bluetooth won't work when the phone is in the cradle, so I can't charge the phone unless I charge it outside of the cradle. Anyhow, I figured I'd look around and see if there was a newer firmware file out there. I already had v1.20. I found a few mentions of a firmware v1.21, although Pioneer doesn't have any AVIC-NEX8000
  3. I upgraded my 8000 from firmware 1.06 to 1.11 a few days ago. The touchscreen has vastly better sensitivity. It was very difficult to use before, and now it's quite nice to use. Other than that I didn't really notice any other differences in terms of usability. I didn't notice bluetooth problems under v1.06, so I was not in need of improvement in that area.
  4. Siri voice recognition included with Carplay is very good. I can say "play the white album" and it will work. How long would it take to get that album playing via the phone touchscreen or the NEX touchscreen? Also I can use Siri to call people, and it will work and work well. Finally, there is the issue of directions. I can simply say "directions to 25 main street, middletown NY" and more often than not it will get it right. While I don't like the Carplay apple maps as much as the NEX maps, getting a destination into the NEX system takes A WHILE. Especially if the destination is in a dif
  5. I have the NEX8000, and recently upgraded my phone to iOS 8.3. Carplay works fine, and I can still run other apps (such as Waze) while music is still playing without any problems. The messaging behavior is part of carpal - I've been seeing that since I've been using Carplay on my NEX8000.
  6. If you like using the Apple Map under carplay, you can always use Siri to get around. You can hold down the center button on the NEX, or the iPhone button, and once Siri kicks in just say go home, or directions to home, or something along those lines. As long as you have a "me" entry in your contacts list, that wiil do it.
  7. I'm using a proclip dock, which has a pass-through port for the Apple 1m cable. I haven't seen (heard!) the issue since I upgraded to iOS 8.1.1
  8. When I have my iPhone 5s connected to my NEX8000, if I am listening to the radio it switches over to iPod 1 after about 2 minutes. I then switch back to Radio, and it switches back to iPod 1. This game continues until I get fed up and I take the phone out of the charging cradle. Has anyone else seen this behavior? Anything I can do about it, other than disconnecting the iPhone? The iPhone has iOS 8.1 and the NEX8000 has the v1.06 firmware update. After having many problems with the iOS 8.1 update, I am now wary of all firmware updates and I'm inclined to ignore the v1.08 NEX firmware u
  9. The carplay album art is terrible. We can only hope that Apple will eventually get the message, and fix it. I'm only moderately hopeful, since iTunes has been getting significantly worse with each full-version increment. The music player on the Iphone also seems to get worse with each new version of iOS, rather than better. Meh.
  10. The NEX5000 has two USB ports. You have to have your iPhone connected to port 1 via a lightning USB cable, but there's no reason you can't then connect your iPod to USB port 2. You can either run CarPlay or the NEX interface to play music from the iPhone. To play music from your iPod, you'd have to switch to the NEX interface, and select iPod 2 from your source list. I've got this setup - I've got an old iPod with a cracked screen that sits in my center console bin and it's just connected all the time to USB 2. If I forget my iPhone, the trusty old iPod is ready and waiting.
  11. CarPlay over wifi would be a nice-to-have, particularly for short trips. If you're just going on a short trip, it's still nice to have CarPlay but the WiFi battery draw would be fairly minimal. If you're going on a longer trip, you could then plug in your phone.
  12. The x000 series offers a LOT of customization settings, and one of those settings should give you the choice of simply stopping at the end of an album, repeating the album, or playing the next album by the artist. Or other things. I've noticed that when I select an album in Carplay, it stops when it's done and display's "STOP" on the screen. Hallelujah! I'm lukewarm on carplay for the most part, but I've been using just so that when an album is done it actually stops.
  13. When using Carplay, is there a setting in which you can set the iPhone to NOT change screens when you do something in Carplay? For example, if I'm running Waze on the phone I don't want it to jump to my music list when I use Siri to play a different album, but that's just what it does.
  14. When Carplay starts up on my NEX8000, I get a warning screen with an OK button that I have to hit. This screen invariably comes up just as I start driving, and it practically screams for me to hit OK. It's ironic that you're acknowledging that using the radio could be a safety issue, when hitting that OK button as you start driving could be particularly dangerous. Any chance I can get it to stop showing me this ridiculous screen every single time I start up the car?
  15. My Nex8000 upgrade went fairly smoothly. I used the SD card. Despite the stern warning not to let the firmware upgrade run while driving, that's just what I did. I wasn't sure if the upgrade would take 10 minutes or half an hour, and I've got a long commute, so I certainly didn't want to add the firmware load time only my commute. Once it was done, I hit the home button, and it booted into Carplay. It works properly. There's a voice button on my steering wheel, but it never worked with the 8000, and sure enough it still doesn't work, so I have to hit the home button instead. The o
