I have the same problem on my unit... when I turn it on, it displays "checking disk", then "please insert the appropriate disk" (in 3 different languages). Like 9enisp, I can press the source button and fumble through stations, but the only thing displayed on my screen is the "please insert the appropriate disk". I tried "reflashing" the unit, but no luck. I am about at my last resort to send it in for repair.

I have this same problem with the "insert appropriate disk" and I have tried going through the service menu to rewrite the programs, but no luck. I was just wondering if anyone has found a fix, since it seems so many have had the same problem.

If I shouldn't use the disc with cleaning brushes, then how do I clean the lense? I would rather not have to go through sending the unit back and waiting months to get it fixed.

The disc doesn't look scratched, but the unit was exposed to a lot of dust. Is there a good way to clean the lens of the DVD reader?

Yes, The disc is in the lower slot.

I've had my D1 for about a month and all of a sudden it comes on with a black and white screen with "Please eject the disc and insert the appropriate disc" I've tried switching discs, but no luck. I've tried resetting, but it would just come back to the same screen whether I had a disc in or not. It will not let me do anyhting else. Has anyone encountered this problem?
