1.
Yeah, didn't think about that. Leave it to a Floridian to not think about winter 8)
Well, I'm a Floridian too, so it wouldn't be a problem for me; I don't even think I ever used my heater at all last winter! I talked to the Sound Advice guy yesterday, and he called Pioneer and found out exactly what we've been discussing here--that the Z1 will cut off the hard drive at 122 degrees until it cools down enough to operate. But that's not exactly what mine is doing; it's not completely booting above a certain temperature (much lower than 122, never getting past
  2.

It IS due to heat, but I don't think it gets up to 122 degrees in my car. Besides, my iPod lives in my glove box, and it has been there for at least a year and a half, and has never had any problems with its hard drive in that time.
If you had ever designed electronic systems you wouldn't make this statement. The heat generated by electronics these days is incredible. The heat generated by the CPU in your PC is the equivalent of a 75 Watt or 100 Watt light bulb in a small, closed box. Cooling electronics these days is one of the
  3. It turns out that this may be related to the problem I described in this thread... In my case, the hard drive IS running when the unit does not boot up (stays at the Pioneer logo screen), and will sequentially play songs from the library; however, only the volume buttons work, so you can't navigate tracks when it gets into that mode, and even then, the unit will randomly decide to stop playing one song and go to the next, sometimes skipping entire songs along the way. I can also switch sources in this situation, and the radio and iPod i
  4. Well, this happened again the other day, but with a different song. It played the first two minutes of it, then abruptly jumped to the next song. I played the song again, and it did the same thing. The next morning, I tried playing it a third time, and it played all the way through. So when this problem occurs, it doesn't seem like a disk problem, just temporary confusion of the Z1. Has anyone else had this happen? I still don't know whether to be concerned about it, or if it's just another inevitable glitch that we early adopters have to put up with...
  5. Thanks Ducati... I tried turning off the lights while starting the car last night (which had turned on the headlights automatically), and it did unlock all of the controls on the Z1. I just wonder how it's wired, and how it needs to be wired to dim the Z1's display whenever the lights are on, whether automatically or manually...
  6. I've noticed that my Z1 dims at night, like it's supposed to, but I've been unable to get the headlight flashing trick to work. Digging a little deeper, I discovered that when my headlights are set to automatically turn on, the Z1 dims, but if I manually turn on the headlights, it doesn't. I was able to verify this by watching the "Illumination" indicator in the hardware settings and switching the lights on, then letting them automatically turn on. Does anyone know how this might be wired? Since I didn't do the installation myself, I'm not sure how exactly they wired it. But since I n
  7.
2) I have downloaded a few CDs to the hard drive and the Artist name is not showing up. Anyway to fix this for future CDs (Im burning them with Nero)? I read in the manual that you can go in and edit the artist name but when I go into the edit mode the touch buttons are gray and will not let me select "artist name" to change. Any ideas?
You probably aren't able to edit the artist info on the Z1 because you don't have the parking brake on. Try it with the brake on and see if it works then. What is the original source for the CDs you're burning? If
  8. Today I deleted the problem track, and inserted the CD to re-record it into the Z1. It's working so far, I just wonder what the problem was in the first place...
  9. I recorded a CD into my Z1 about a week ago, and yesterday it started playing the last song from it, but after about a minute, it stopped and started playing the next CD, as if it had reached the end of the disc. Thinking it was a one-time glitch, I tried playing the same song again later, and sure enough, at what seemed like the same point in the song, it stopped playing it again. I know that the Z1 has played this song several times completely through prior to this, so I'm wondering what might be the issue here. Has anyone else had this problem? Later today, I'll delete that t

    Gracenote???
I have a question. I wanted to know if anyone has figured out how to update the gracenote database. It doesnt read any of my new CDs. I cant get in touch with gracenote and pioneer is no help. Can someone tell when an update is coming or what I can do to fix this problem. It sucks typing in every name of every song when I record a cd.
The best way to handle these CDs is to duplicate them with a CDDB-aware CD recording application that supports CD-TEXT (I use Nero 6). When you burn the CD, just select the "burn CD-TEXT info" option (or whatever your app calls it),
  11.
for soem reason i cant get this to work
This procedure is explained on page 121 in the Operation Manual; it's probably easier to follow than my text-only description of the process. I never noticed it before because I didn't equate "playlist" with "album" until I accidentally stumbled across this screen...
Naturally, after posting that yesterday, I found two albums that the Z1 absolutely refuses to recognize by voice, no matter how clearly I enunciate the titles. I have a CD called "Tainted Angel," and when I say that title, it keeps going to a different CD called "Blame the Vain." This is regardless of how slowly and clearly I say it, it just won't get it right. Another one called "Just Add Ice" it interprets as "Cancel." So my euphoria over the voice recognition is somewhat diminished, but it's still impressive when it does get it right.
Let me rep
  13. I don't mean to sound so excited about something so seemingly mundane, but considering the other problem it helped me solve, I am pretty excited about it... There's been some discussion here (by myself and others) about the apparent inability to delete an entire album from the music library of the Z1. It turns out you actually can, it's just extremely unintuitive. I don't know if this is listed anywhere in the manual (I haven't found it yet), but I stumbled across it this morning. I'm going by memory here, but I'm fairly certain this was the process... First, go into the libr
After posting what I did about navigating the music library yesterday, last night I tried once again to use the voice recognition feature. I figured out I wasn't quite doing it properly before, and long story short, once the Z1 was in "Album" mode, I just pressed the voice command button, said "Music Search," waited for the prompt, then said the album title I was looking for. I tried four last night, and another five or so on my way to work this morning, and it recognized all of them. When I played around with the voice commands before, I thought it just wasn't recogni
2) When browsing the "Albums" it only displays the name of the album, not the name of the arist or any other information. This forces you to memorize the name of the albums versus basing everything off the name of the Artist.
Have you had any luck with the voice recognition? Still forces you to remember the names of albums, but as I said in my response to mhyde71 above, it works better now that I know how to use it.
5) Updates to CDDB. I read on the Pioneer web site that if you have a CD that is not recognized, and want to get an updat
