It is true that you need 5 volts as apple decided to change the whole format of the charging system in favor of this cheaper design. Aside from all of that, you are better off just charging your iphone with a regular cable and using the 3.5mm stereo jack to the pioneers aux input. After many hours of searching the internet and a new subscription to ALLDATAdiy.com , I thought I would try and alleviate any other potential headaches for other owners. I went to the Canadian Pioneer site, and there is an update listed for the Z3 so that you can install the Gracenote CDDB update. I installed the Pioneer update and then followed up with the Gracenote update and it works like a charm. The update is said to have been made available in February. Hope this helps.
