1. Yeah, saw that this weekend, but thanks for the heads-up. Hoping it will make it's way to a discount retailer or two sometime soon. Specs look good, but not at MSRP.
2. A1cntrlr -- that's kinda' where my head was at too . . . I mean, sure the Z1 would remember what GPS coordinates you had travelled, but what would be displayed on screen (if anything)? I gotta' believe that without streets, the GPS data's value would be . . . . uh, not so helpful. But that's just me. :?:
3. DOH! Sorry, missed that. Man, need to up my lithium . . . hyperboarder -- can you take some pics during your install? I've got a 2002.5 Mazda Protege ES and have been itching to install the Z-1, very curious to see how your install goes (that's code for: I'm so glad you're being the test subject!)
4. Does anyone know for certain that the H1BT is completely different hardware-wise? If so, then not a whole lot you could do. However, the units appear very similar -- yes, I know all the differences would be under the skin -- just kinda' wondering out loud what would happen if you purchased a 'replacement' for the 'damaged' hard drive from Pioneer for your H1BT and installed it in your Z-1? Just a thought? If you did this and it didn't work, you'd be out what, $400-$500 (depending on what Pioneer charges) and could likely sell it on eBay UK?
5. how would gps tracking be useful without maps?
6. Am going to buy this for the wife . . . . anyone know and ETA of when this will be available?
7. Ok, have been absolutely impressed with the Pioneer Avic-Z1 (even with some of the nits I've read). Even though it's not approved for installation into my vehicle, I understand it will fit with a little elbow grease. To a degree, I understand that asking this audience (who have presumably already chosen the Z1) to provide guidance on whether or not an integrated solution like the Z1 is better than, say, a Kenwood pieced together system that will do all the same stuff, is probably not going to net me any "Ah, man, I wish I woulda' gone the Kenwood route . . . " But I'm asking all the sam
8. htrdlnc -- well given the fact that the question (in question) was about the ss wire on a Charger for a Z-1, then yeah, I would think that your $20k Ferrari install experience doesn't apply -- maybe I'm wrong? I'm certainly not someone who would point at your experience and say "You don't know jack." because I'm not an installer. I take no issue with the fact that you know more about car A/V installation than me . . . that's a given. The only point I am trying to make is that when you show up as a new contributor on a Forum and make what appears to be a pretty debatable statemen
9. htrdlnc -- Agree, forums are probably the poorest form of communication (after e-mail / IM), as the reader is left to fill in the feeling / emotion of a post and often do so with malice. Sincerely, I (we?) can only go on what you post. If you posted "I have 2 years and 25 installs with the Z-1" you'd likely be given a lot more "due" than with a fairly generic statement of "20 years in the business". I am not being critical of what you wrote / posted, just trying to share the rational of how I arrived at my statement. You have the benefit of knowing the level of your experience and kno
10. htrdlnc -- not trying to offend you or 'tear you down', but if someone disagreeing with you is more than you are able to stomach, perhaps you shouldn't hang around here. If you took a moment to read ducatiboy's posts on this forum, you'd see that he's a pretty helpful guy. I read his post to you and while it might sting that there is a chance that he's right and you're wrong, I can't see how anything he wrote was an attack on you personally. Btw, if I have to choose between 20 (generic) years in the business and ducatiboy's experience with these particular units, I choose ducat
11. so the "double din thingy" (technical term?) attaches somehow to the dash? :D does it attach to the dash with screws/bolts or some other way? how does the head unit attach to the "double din thingy"? does it snap into place with some sort of pressure fittings?
12. I don't understand that either. I have a 2002.5 Mazda Protege ES for which there is no mounting kit. I too was advised by the folks here to use a double DIN sleeve, but having not ever pulled my OEM head unit I sorta' have the same question you do, which is: What/How do I mount or attach the DIN sleeve? Assuming the DIN sleeve is adequately mounted or attached, does the Avic-Z1 slide in and "lock" into place? I realize that most of these questions will probably be answered visually once I start the process, but I'm still curious.

Z1 Dimensions

7.027” wide X 7.127” deep X 3.934” tall
14. if anyone figures out how to does this with a wife, please let me know . . . . :D
15. MikeBaby -- I live in Columbus also (west side -- Hilliard) . . . at least on the weekends. Did you do your install yourself or did and installer do it for you? If so, who, how much, and were you pleased with the results?
16. Don't know about specific phones, but Verizon cripples the BlueTooth capabilities of every phone they release -- there are quite a few web sites out there, however, that show you how to "hack back" those capabilities.
17. Thanks for the information. Going to proceed with the test fit fo the block of wood 1st, then the sleeve mount. Will keep the forum posted.
18. skicrave . . . .that makes sense to me. Btw, is that "skicrave" as in "ski crave" as in "craving some skiing"? Water or snow? Ok, next set of questions: what is "iso mount" (yes, I'm clueless) as opposed to sleeve mounted? I think I know what sleeve mounted would mean (crutchfield or whoever provides a sleeve that goes in the DIN opening, and then the Avic Z-1 mounts to the sleave, right?
19. Didn't see anything at www.installer.com . . . .any other resources? I have asked a friend to build a block of wood in the same dimensions as Pioneers published dimensions and am going to pull the OEM HU and see if I can fit the block of wood in there. If I can, then next step would be to purchase the Z-1 and figure out how to mount it.
20. Thanks. Two things -- 1) some sources list my opening as a 1 & 3/4 DIN (WTF? Is there such a thing?) and 2) where might I go look for the proper brackets?
21. Ok www.crutchfield.com say the Avic Z-1 won't fit. Best Buy says it will fit. While Crutchfield is probably the more credible source, that's not the answer I want. :D Does anyone know if an Avic Z-1 can fit a 2002.5 Protege ES?
