I may just bite the bullet and go this route. Thanks for the link and pics.

Everyone else: Thanks for all the info. While I knew the touch-screen was delicate, I didn't realize how intricate it is. This forum is great.

Not so perfect answer:

my best suggestion would be only if it's warrantied by pioneer, brick the unit by messing up a software mod, and send it in under warranty. If they ask what happened to the screen, simply say it came like that and it wasn't a big deal for you to call them about that.

If I may, Aviator, why not such a perfect answer? He gets a brand new unit that way, scratch free, and doesn't have to do any work about it.

If it's gonna be like that whole thing with Tacomaboy about "scamming an innocent person", then please, just agree to disagree and let the OP decide for himself (considering Pioneer is not an "innocent person"). If for any other reason, I'd like to hear it.

No...Pioneer is sure not perfect with this unit or the way they've handled it. But think about what you just suggested to the OP. To intentionally destroy a product to get a company to furnish you a new one for a problem you caused is fraud. Plain and simple. So much so that if it were an insurance company standing behind the warranty, they could easily pursue the matter. I'm sure you don't want the OP to risk trouble that way. Another exaggerated example...if your car had a problem that couldn't be fixed...even if it weren't your fault...and you decided to roll it off a cliff to get a new one...what do you think the outcome would be if they determined you did it on purpose? We all know the answer to that. It's the same thing only on a much larger scale.

Pioneer should stand behind their products. No doubt. They need to pay for their errors. But the consumer needs to pay for his own errors. No quid pro quo allowed...

That's not to say he may have a case to send the unit back and demand a refund for selling a defective unit. I could get behind that one. But that's a whole different other subject matter. Personally, from what I'm seeing done here, this unit may be one of the best units in the world with it's ability to be programmed for what you want. Just a few bugs Pioneer needs to fix we can't.
