Daytime running lights affect light flick bypass?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2004 Jetta GLI

I'm looking to get the Z1 shortly and of COURSE would love to have everything unlocked while driving. So my passenger can input GPS directions while i drive and or watch a movie. and so i can use it while in traffic or waiting at a stop light

i have been reading all over the forum and I would love to just have to have my lights on then turn them off at the load screen.

however, i have daytime running lights that can not be turned off unless i pull the E brake when the car is on.

will this keep the trick from working? will turning my actual headlights on then off cause the BYPASS to work?

thanks.

It all depends on where your installer attached the Ill wire.

Here is a simple test.

Does your Z1 dim when you turn on the parking lights? If yes then the trick to flash the parking lights during boot up will work.

2nd test:
Does Z1 dim when headlights turned on. If yes then same idea. Flash headlights during boot.

If neither work then does your Z1 ever dim? If not then your Ill wire is not hooked up correctly so you need the Ducati flasher or get the wiring fixed by your installer.

What a coincidence - I have a 2005 GLI and my Z1 is getting installed saturday (7/8) along with a viper responder system by Greg of GoMobile in Long Island, NY. He is a Volkswagen specialist/enthusiast/owner and is well renowned on the vwvortex.com message boards. The problem with our cars is that the illumination and switched power messages travel over the CAN BUS data link and as such, I dont believe there is an illumination or switched +12v wire in the harness. From what I understand, many people run both the +12v switched and illumination wires directly to the fuse box, though you can most likely tap into the blue/grey wires anywhere in the dash. Long story short, no the Daytime Running Lights will not affect the bypass IF the install is done correctly; and you can most likely forget about controlling the brightness via the rheostat like the rest of the dashboard. You will probably have full intensity with headlights off and dimmed intensity with headlights on. Any subsequent brightness levels will probably have to be selected on the unit itself (if this is even an option).

In any event, I know that Greg does the install on this unit the right way so I'll post back and let you know how it operates Saturday night. In the meantime, swing over to this thread at the vortex and check out his work. This install is in an R32, but my dashboard looks exactly the same (I know the 2004 model has different trim) and all of our cars are built on the MKIV platform so the wiring methods should be comparable.

Some of his other installs:

The z1 only has 2 levels. Day time and night time. You can set the intensity of each manually and the lights will switch between the 2, but the Z1 won't respond to the dimmer knob in your dash and change the birghtness that way. It's a button on the Z1.

Do the guys on the VWVORTEX board know about the auto flasher circuits for the Z1 that I sell? www.sminntech.com

Thanks for clearing that up for me, good to know. I purchased one of your cicuits about a week ago and then called up my installer to see if he could put it in for me. In speaking to him I did find out he is familiar with this message board, so I'm pretty sure hes at least heard about it, if not installed a few. I intend to post a review thread over there once it is installed so I'll be sure to point them your way.
