DJ Hellfire
I just installed my D2 this morning. I mounted the antenna on windshield behind the rear view mirror next to the ez-pass. I know the manual says to mount it as level as possible, but you guys think I will have any problems with navigation with it mounted on the windshield? I wanted up high, but not on the roof. HiFiSi
Well the metal base is supposed to be facing down. So if you've mounted the base of it to the glass, it's not oriented correctly and is probably not gonna work very good. You should stick it on your dashboard as far forward as possible. And if the antenna isn't mounted directly to metal, it should be mounted using the little metal sticker/plate that was supplied with it. I just stuck it to the windshield. Seems to work fine, but if it seems to be screwy, I'll try moving it. Thanks!
DJ Hellfire
So after some testing, it actually works pretty well upside down on the windshield. All the 3D Hybrid features work properly, it knows when I am turning left right, up/down incline accurately, and the signal is good.

crd
Mine is installed under the dash in top of the radio and I get good reception. All depends n your windshield if it's radio frequency protected or not.
DJ Hellfire
Nice! Is that a Mazda? Here is mine:
crd
Nice! Is that a Mazda? Here is mine: Yeap a Mazda CX-7 I just got the radio yesterday, but I had one before but I sold it because the Double din kit was unavaible. Now they came with it and I had to buy it again. HarmsWay
Mine is also stuck inside the dash above the D3. I'd originally just stuffed it in there temporarily but haven't any any GPS signal strength issues so there it stays. I would expect that the purpose of the metal pad that the GPS antenna sticks is to block interference from car electronics to the antenna, so it's not surprising it would work in that windshield location. It's not that close to other electronics, so as long as the windshield isn't metalized it would be fine. The 3D (pitch, roll & yaw) sensors are inside the D3 are they not? So they will work regardless of where the GPS antenna is.

HiFiSi
No, the antenna's just an antenna. The gyros are all located in the unit itself.
DJ Hellfire
No, the antenna's just an antenna. The gyros are all located in the unit itself. Which also explains why you can't install the unit at an extreme angle.
axxman
My antenna is under the dash, just above the radio, the xm navtraffic antenna is there as well. works good for me.
dsf3g
Placement is a lot less critical these days with the enhanced sensitivity of the latest SiRF chips. I put my antenna under the rear windshield and have no problems with reception. What's particularly significant about this is that I drive an MR2 Turbo, so my rear windshield is at a 90 degree angle, meaning that the roof of the car is directly above the GPS antenna, not clear glass as you'd have if you placed it under an angled windshield like the front windsheild. DJ Hellfire
I was going to place on top of the 3rd brake light. But but windows are tinted and I know they use some type of metal in tint film. So I didn't wanna risk interference. I love where it's at. You can't even see it from outside the car.
