Please Note: This Howto assumes the following:

1) You know how to get into Testmode

2) You know how to navigate folders, copy and paste, in Windows CE

3) This HOWTO is based in part on information found at this blog post and on the knowledge presented by other contributors here on these forums.

4) With the exception of copying/pasting files, all editing of files will be done on your desktop/laptop computer, *not* the nav unit directly.

5) I will include a copy of my complete data.zip file at the end of this post, you may use it as a basis for your own work, you may edit it to your purposes, or you may use it as-is. If you use it as-is, you will need to place the correct font files in the correct directory. See the readme that accompanies it.

This is for educational purposes only and I assume no liability or responsibility if you cause damage to your Navi unit by following these directions.

-----------

Step 1: Make a backup of your existing data.zip file and your sys.txt file. These are both located at \My Flash Drive\APL2\iGo

Step 2: Edit your sys.txt file to add the following section to the bottom:

[map]
3d_scale_carmodel=1
3dcarsizemin=30
3dcarsizemax=40
3dcarsizemul=20

Step 3: Get or create your desired bmp file(s) for the 3d view. You can use a rear-view photo of a car, you can use an arrow, you can use anything you want really. For the purpose of this howto, the file must be named car3d.bmp Further, for the purpose of this howto, it is assumed that the dimensions are 85 x 65 pixels.

Step 4: Place the car3d.bmp file into the data.zip file at this location: data.zip\ui_pioneer\800_480

Step 5: Edit data.zip\ui_pioneer\800_480\ui\navigatemap_800_480.ui to add the following lines in the very first layer section:

Step 6: Edit data.zip\ui_pioneer\common\ui\navigatemap.ui and search for the following script:

At the bottom of this script, add the following line:
run 'car3d.y 1340'

(This goes directly above the "" line)

Step 7: Still in the file data.zip\ui_pioneer\common\ui\navigatemap.ui search for the script

At the bottom of this script, add the following line:
run 'car3d.y 340'

(This goes directly above the "" line)

Step 8: Save your modified data.zip and sys.txt back to your SD card and copy them into your nav unit in the /My Flash Drive/APL2/iGo directory

Step 9: Restart and verify your nav system is displaying the correct image in the correct location.

-----------

What This Does:

* The changes to sys.txt cause the 3d red arrow to be suppressed.

* The that was added to navigatemap_800_480.ui places the car3d.bmp image onto your map screen. The x and y coordinates are set to properly position an 85 x 65 pixel image on the screen.

* The two lines added to navigatemap.ui cause the car3d icon to be hidden in 2d mode and visible in 3d mode by moving it on or off the screen depending on what view you are in.

What this does Not do:

* The car3d.bmp icon will not rotate or tilt, it is a fixed image that is painted ontop of the map

Caveats:

* If your image is not 85 x 65 pixels you will need to recalculate the x and y positions. The original red arrow was positioned with the point at x=400 and y=360. It is a minor bit of math to figure out the x and y for any size bmp file. Just remember you are figuring out the x and y for the top left corner of the bmp, in order to make it centered at 400x360.

* If you use my data.zip file as-is please do read the readme.txt which is included in it. My data.zip does a lot more than what is covered by this howto.

* I am happy to help where I can, but in general terms, I prefer to share knowledge and help people learn to help themselves, therefore I will not make a custom data.zip for you. Sorry.

My most recent data.zip can be downloaded here: http://www.felesmagus.com/stuff/steph_data.zip

(Unzip that file to get the readme and the actual data.zip)

Cheers!

Edited to fix typos!

You might need to activate images in firefox, or something like that? I use Safari (on Macintosh) and see all the images just fine. Also I think you need to be logged on to the site to see the images? I seem to recall before I registered, I couldn't see any images...

navigatemap.ui files are in the separate "ui" folder, correct?

navigatemap.ui files are in the separate "ui" folder, correct?

navigatemap.ui is located in data.zip\ui_pioneer\common\ui

It should not be confused with navigatemap_800_480.ui which is located in data.zip\ui_pioneer\800_480\navigatemap_800_480.ui

The difference between them is files with the 800_480 in their name are mostly graphical/visual elements, while the files that are in the common\ui directory are mostly scripts.

Cheers!

I should clarify...

I don't have a "navigatemap_800_480.ui" in the "data.zip\ui_pioneer\800_480\" folder

it IS in the "data.zip\ui_pioneer\800_480\ui" folder...

The same with ..\common It has to go in \common\ui

Not the same with yours?

Posted Sep 01, 2008 · 21:19 UTC#57

My mistake, i had a typo in my last post. (Dang data.zip with it's redundant files and multiple folders)

data.zip\ui_pioneer\800_480\ui\navigatemap_800_480.ui

data.zip\ui_pioneer\common\ui\navigatemap.ui

Those are the two paths/folders that I was refering to.

ok...

Got it.

I can change the car3d.bmp to anything I want now that I know it works...

THANK YOU STEPH!!

skicrave,

I used the arrow you gave me, copied both daycar.bmp and nightcar.bmp into my uncompressed data.zip folder and re-compressed it using Winzip (by right clicking on the DATA folder and clicking 'Add to DATA.zip' under the Winzip submenu). I then copied it to my SD card and copied it to My Flash Disk/APL2/iGo on my unit and then restarted. For some reason the system starting prompt comes up and stays up, it doesn't go away. I am able to push buttons and use the radio and such while it's still up, but the system restarts itself after a few minutes of use.

Is there a specific compression I should be using? What's happening?

Posted Sep 04, 2008 · 01:12 UTC#60

Yeah I did that once too...

You've got a "data" FOLDER in data.zip with everything in the folder...

(WRONG)

You have to highlight everything IN the folder, right click it, and hit send to, compressed folder.

Rename the resultant .zip file to data.zip

Gortok,

I just tried your solution with no luck. I highlighted the folders/files in the DATA folder and compressed to DATA.zip and tried it on the unit. I'm having the same problem as before except now my Top Menu screen goes blank after about two seconds and the system loading message stays on the screen. I feel like such an idiot.

Make sure you can get back into test mode and undo any changes you made, thats top priority. Then figure out what you did wrong on your computer

I figure I should post something on here because I have taken so much info from you guys. These are what I am using for my nav screen. They are photos of my truck that I tweaked a bit. So anyone with an F-150 or I guess if you just want a truck on your screen feel free to use these

I am using the first one for 2d and the second image for 3d in case you could not tell.

I dont have photoshop but if i take a picture of my altima can someone edit it for me?

Also i'm in the process of adding BorisM's current scripts and in it is a folder called ui_pioneer/common can i just add the two bmp into this folder and copy them to myflash/apl2/igo instead of unzipping/rezipping data.zip?

Posted Oct 10, 2008 · 19:12 UTC#66

Ok, so I got all the code to work, but I have a problem with the image. As soon as I save it as a bmp from photoshop, it adds a square white background on my image, making it look very dumb on my screen lol. What I did, is I took a pic of my car, lassoed the car only, inverted selection, deleted everything else, inverted again, copied the car, and pasted it into a new file with a "transparent background". It appears to work, until I save it. Ideas?

EDIT: I added an "alpha channel" whatever that means, made its opacity 0%, and now the image is completely invisible when it pulls it up in the AVIC

EDIT2: Got it! I just kept retrying until it worked. Sweet mod. Thanks to all involved!

after getting the car with pen tool, how do u invert the selection?

I couldn't find it in the menus but friendly Google told me that ctrl+shift+I is the hotkey

Here is a sample of it working. Just need some photoshop skills.

I noticed that some had changed the green/blue box. But it does not seem to be a .bmp I think is part of coding… right. Could something like this be done?

http://www.avic411.com/forum/viewtopic. ... c&start=45

(Updated to the right thread) Sorry.

Posted Oct 13, 2008 · 06:10 UTC#73

This really is the wrong thread to address those questions in, but sure, that could be done. You would just need to create those graphic files, and then add the calls for them in the skin file.

I'm not sure what the battery is supposed to indicate though, so that one may be more difficult to accomplish.

Posted Oct 13, 2008 · 15:10 UTC#74

Battery would simply show the battery charge status, so for anything other than F-500 it would be a moot point. For 700-900-90 it would make more sense to show the GPS status (which can be accomplished with one line in navigatemap_800_400.ui)

How big does the image need to be when we save it in Photoshop? I didn't see that mentioned anywhere.
