I am interested in a copy for a Z1 to Z2. Please pm me with details!

Posted Aug 10, 2007 · 17:17 UTC#52

Ok, I installed the Z2 image on my Z1 with great success. Everything is bypassed using the 2-wire bypass. So far I have 400+ miles from a trip I took yesterday and everything is still bypassed.

When I installed the drive, it took a few moments for "system updates" then everything came online. The version now reads 2.000 and I verified the maps were updated.

By the end of today, I will have over 600 miles with the new image. Assuming everything stays bypassed, I will do a level-4 reset, remove the drive and create a Bypassed Z2 image.

Right now, the image was 9.4 Gbs before I inserted back into my AVIC. I still don't have a good solution on how to share the image. Distributing DVDs is the last thing I want to do. I can WinRar the file into 1 Gb portions if needed.

That's a very good news. However, hosting a 9.4GB is not easy due to the bandwidth limitation. I don't know of any free hosting sites that would host that big file. If you don't have any other choices and want to go with the DVD solution, I can help.

Thanks,

Could you just burn them on dvds and distribute them? I am willing to pay for that service.

Posted Aug 11, 2007 · 03:30 UTC#56

mediamax.com has a 1 Gb download limit per month, so that would mean one person gets 1/9 of the file...

I'm trying out megashares.com now...

I would be interested in this image as well, I would pay for shipping of DVD's if necessary, but would it be possible for someone to say upload it to Newsgroups? they post full HD movies there that are 30 gb+ that I haev downloaded before and the speeds are very fast if you pay for a service, for those that don't haev accounts the service I use sells a 3 days for $3 trial.... anyone could just download a trial newsgroup app and buy a $3 and download at VERY fast speeds and everyone could have access to it.. just a thought, please don't flame me.

TIA

stryk3r, that's a very good thought. I don't know if anyone would necessarily flame you for this. I actually think it's the best way to distribute this... to other internet savvy people.

I would say that 99% of the internet users out there don't even know that they exist and it would turn into a maintenance nightmare with the number of posts of "What web site do I go to in order to download from these news groups?".

I have enlightened some friends as to the newsgroup world and many of them just don't get it. Those who do get it, this would be the perfect medium to share this disk. For those who don't will still want it, and we can't force them to become more intelligent, but we might have to "dumb down" our sharing method. It seems like it would be easy for people to say, it's at alt.binaries.avic.fileshare or something but you can't imagine the flood of help requests we will get here, that's my biggest worry.

Well I'm glad someone else knows about the world of NNTP, it defintely would be the best way IMO cause it wouldn't eat up anyone's BW to serve it... and I would be MORE then willing to donate my upload BW if I could get the image.

As for the support on the forums, your always gonna get dumb requests for help... maybe create a STICKY and put all the relevant info in it, ie (alt.binaries.avic.files or whatever, the links to NNTP trials apps, and links to newsgroup providers with cheap trial accounts (some lucky people will even have FREE NG access through thier ISP, mine took it away :( ) and then lock the sticky and make a note that this is not a NG usage forum and that all the info you need is here, you just have to READ as always.

It's the same with all great info on forums, someone always has to ask questions, but I think if it's a sticky and easily found then less questions will be asked, and the "usual" people will direct the newbs to the sticky and close unneeded posts as quickly as possible so as to not flood the board. Anyways, this would be awesome if someone would upload it, or as I stated I would be willing to upload it, if I had the files...

Cheers

I think this is the best way to go. stryk3r, I'll PM you and we'll work out the details. Once we get the files uploaded, I'll draft up a thread that ducatiboy can look at for a sticky. This will include instructions on how to upgrade your Z1 using the image as well as links to newsgroups how (I'll need your help on this part).

I'll let everyone know in this thread when everything's ready.

I'm very familiar with usenet, and I agree that this is the best way to go. I don't know why I didn't think of it in the beginning of the thread!

Please make a post when you complete the upload, with information on what group it was posted in. I'd like to start d/ling it as soon as possible. :)

I'd also be willing to contribute to the cause, if it costs you anything to post it. I know most of the usenet services a month to month, so at most it should cost you a month's membership to your favorite nntp service.

This is where I send people to learn about them:

Don't know if the link helps at all for anyone, but one of the better write ups.

AFMagnum

I'm glad you're going usenet. I've been using it for years. It's a great way to get huge files. I know what a pain it is making the PAR files and splitting the original into smaller, postable files though. I would also be happy to kick you a few bucks for your trouble and use of your upload bandwidth if you'd setup a paypal, and I'm sure a lot of the other guys would too.

I'd actually be happy to buy the disks from Pioneer if they would make enough friggin copies to sell me one. LOL

Can't wait to download so I can update my z1 to z2 =).

Posted Aug 13, 2007 · 21:16 UTC#65

any update on the status yet?

Posted Aug 14, 2007 · 03:46 UTC#66

I'm working with stryk3r to get the files on usenet. Unfortunetly, I haven't had a chance to setup something myself. Once posted, I'll put the info up in this thread. I'll follow shortly with a writeup for those who need the extra help.

Howdy guys..

May I make another suggestion?? BitTorrent. I've used it to distribute an 8 gig Nav disc image for another unit before, and it worked out pretty well. I'd be happy to be the tracker for the torrent session. I can coordinate a few seeders first ( those that spend a day or so online to get it all first ), then those seeders stay online and the masses can have at it. In 2 weeks time, I saw over 10 TB of data xfer with the torrent session I did before.

For those that don't know about BitTorrent, it's a distributed peer to peer transfer method. The original file/files are split into MANY small chunks. Each client that is downloading the file, also sends out copies of the chunks they already have. There is no way for malicious people to gain access to your own personal files with this method, it is 100% ONLY the file you're currently downloading.

It would be best if after a client finishes the download, they leave the software running for at least 24 hours. This will allow them to seed other downloaders. ( the more FULL copies available online, the quicker everyone else gets their copy completed. )

AFMagnum, PM me if you want to go this way...

Thanks,

LK

Torrents suck, they are slow, and it depends on someone to always to seed it. Newsgroups are ALWAYS fast and doesn't take anyone's bandwidth once it's uploaded, and they are made for transferring large files like HD movies etc. Plus only I have to upload it and once I am done everyone can download at full speed and have the files within hours, WAY quicker then any torrents that will take days to transfer the files until enough people have downloaded it. Anyways I have created a group alt.binaries.avic.fileshare with my NG provider Usenetserver.com I will upload the files that AFMagnum will send me, then what you want to do with it is all up to you, if you want to start a torrent and seed it go right ahead but I'm sticking with uploading it to the NG's.

Wow... Seems as if you've experienced the worst in torrents.

While some of your points are accurate ( torrents do require seeders to be online, and everyone does contribute part of their own bandwidth), I've gotta disagree on your suggestion that Newsgroups were made to transfer large files like HD Movies. They were really designed as the first non-realtime mass collaboration medium, and were indeed text only areas. If they had been designed for large file transfers, then there wouldn't be a need for all the file splitting / formatting / reassembly tools that people use to put such files on NNTP servers.

Bittorrent on the other hand WAS designed for distributing large files to large quantities of people very quickly, and without a massive impact on any one primary provider's bandwidth. They have had problems with speed on files which aren't very popular, or where the audience was not tech savvy enough to allow the outbound traffic. The outbound traffic issue is getting better of late due mostly to UPnP and NAT traversal technologies.

Alas, I have no problem sucking the files from an NNTP server. Was simply providing another possible solution to the same problem.

Thanks to all who are contributing their time and bandwidth to this cause!

Awesome! As soon as we have this posted, we'll have to make an auction to put a link to Avic411.com. Didn't we have to do this with the original bypass?

Excellent news...although I already bought the upgrade CD. You might already know and do this (if so I apologize), but just in case you dont; split the file up. I sometime (not often anymore because of the problems)use FTP to move around large datasets and have found that sometimes it bombs out and you have start all over. Just a suggestion. Congrats on the image, I'm sure everyone will want to buy you a drink :D .
