FYI, my installer also tried playing a regular DVD through the D2 until he got the error message and remembered it can't, so don't get your hopes up.
jimmy303
The D 1/2 cannot play DVD's, the drive is a DVD-rom unit, not a DVD video drive. The icon is printed right on the radio. If you know someone who can make it play dvds, you have the potential to make a fortune.
GnatGoSplat
It absolutely cannot play DVD's. I would be willing to place a big wager on this too! I have the D1/D2 service manuals. There is NO MPEG decoder chip or audio/video chips in the DVD drive whatsoever. Interestingly enough, there are 3 versions of the DVD drive unit. One is a DVD-ROM only (what's in the D1/D2), one has the audio/video chips and can play video, and one has all that and additional support for DVD-Audio. The drive units themselves have a composite video output and standard audio line outs. They could very easily have supported DVD video on the D1/D2 using parts off the corporate assembly lines and I'm not sure why they didn't.
jimmy303
Probably to get the D1/2 to compete at a certain price point. If it supported DVD video, why would anyone bother with the N1/2/3? They would also eat into the Z1 sales....
sportsfan21
I was thinking that, but then I figured that people would get the N1/2/3 if they only had a single DIN opening and they would get the Z1 if they wanted the hard drive, voice commands, bluetooth, larger screen, ect. jimmy303
The fact that it is the only double-DIN model with DVD video playback makes it easier to sell for $2k vs. $1300 without HDD and BlueTooth.
