AVIC D3 motion bypass -Toyota Highlander

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased Toyota Highlander Hybrid equipped with after market AVIC D3 and backup camera. Although I am female and computer savvy--build my own computers--I am not mechanically and electrically inclined.

I hate the motion lockup because I'm more frequently passenger in charge of navigation unit. AND the "daytime " LCD screen apparently is non-existent because of the sensor to the headlights. The screen is barely readable in daytime, with the DIMMER setting on max --42.

I bought a "module" off e-Bay which included a separate toggle switch with black/red wires. Module does have some instructions for motion override, but have no idea what the itoggle switch inclusion is for--no directions--just loose in the package.

Here is e-bay link to my purchase if it is still available.

My question is: will any mobile audio/multimedia specialist shop apply any overrides for this problems. The outsourced installer for Toyota, and Toyota will not return my calls. The installer also screwed up the "moonroof open" message and broke louvers on a airvent control--makes me wonder if it is correctly installed.

This vehicle is a fully loaded feature rich SUV. I don't want to upset other features such as speed control, information panels, etc. with this alteration.l

Further in my state the only laws about video in front seat, applies to bus and cab drivers only.

Sorry to annoy you guys with my problems, but I am the only techie in the family, if you could call me that.

The ebay item you purchased is worthless for the D3. The D3 bypass is simple, permanent and the instructions are posted in the D1 forum section, near the top. Yes you'll have to remove the D3 to apply the fix. If you list your location other members can recommend installers in your area to do this for you.

I am located in Bull Shoals, Arkansas which is near the following small cities: Mountain Home and Harrison, Arkansas. I also often shop in Springfield, Missouri and Little Rock, Arkansas.

I talked to Toyota dealership who outsourced installation of AVIC D3. They nor the installer will do the bypass. They citied DOT rules and possible lawsuits, etc. etc. I do understand.

However, my other concerns about possible poor installation are being addressed.

Fortunately I am not out much on the eBay purchase.

If anyone knows of an installer within 50-100 miles of the abovementioned towns/cities, I would appreciate it. Thanks, loads.

If they hooked everything up correctly, you could easily do the bypass yourself. It really is easy, don't be intimidated by all the wires.

There's no crazy soldering or electrical hazards involved. Just: unplug/plug and snip/crimp. Easiest electrical work you'll ever do. :)

Everyone on this forum can walk you through it.

About the workmanship of the install, if it's working ok, I'd say they did it ok. They may not have used great connectors, but it can be fixed easily. (again, we can show you how).

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone in that area that does installs, but we have several great guys here that know their stuff and can walk you right through it.

thanks everyone.

I am due for some a bug fixes at dealership in about 2 weeks. Some of the bugs did not start until after AVIC D3 installation. I was told the installer, RMS of Springfield MO , might tell me how to do bypass, but will not do it himeself. My other direct problem is the nighttime screen is always on even in daytime. It seems there is a sensor linked to the headlights. Since the Highlander has "running lights" which are dimmed headlights, I suppose there is no cure for that. They may try a different nav. system. Actually I like it pretty well, except database for my area is pre-911. A lot of roads have different names, etc. and it hasn[t been updated. This is all over 5 years ago. I like NAV TEC mapping better.

After my dealership visit I will check back for help, depending what the outcome is.

I do have a friend who is great with wiring. He owes me and my husband a couple of favors. I just might collect.

As far as the night screen on all the time, you can turn it off. Go to MAP, MENU, SETTINGS, DISPLAY OPTIONS. The third virtual button over should say NIGHTTIME. Turn it to DAYTIME. Now this will fix the problem for the dark night screen during the day but will blare that same bright screen at night. There is an adjustment to dim that screen when you switch your headlights on at night. Go to any music source and hit MENU, then SYSTEM , then hit V.AJST. Switch your headlights on then hit the software MAP button which is the third button on the bottom then adjust the DIMMER setting accordingly. That way it will dim to an appropriate setting when you switch your headlights on.

I have the nav LCD setting to daytime and it is still gray; I have the dimmer at max 42. On a different forum the problem is also addressed. The problem seems to be the running lights, a function of the headlights, always on and where the sensor lead is attached. The vehicle's running lights are always on when the vehicle is running, even when the light switch is in the complete off position. There is an AUTO position, too. But right now I am using the completely off position. This is on my list for installer to check out.

One suggestion is a toggle switch on that forum.

This may not have been the best choice for this vehicle. I prefer hard drives because of faster correction response when I am off programmed route.

I have an '05 Toyota Rav4 with daylight running lights similar to yours. My D3, which I installed myself, properly dims the display.

All the wires I soldered from my Toyota harness to my D3 harness were similarly colored (red to red, yellow to yellow, etc) and the D3 illumination wire is orange/white, would have been connected to the orange wire on the Toyota harness.

I bet if you pulled your D3 and checked the wires, your orange/white wire is connected to a differently colored wire.

Here are pics of my install, if that helps any: http://rav4world.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12147&

I am going to print out the whole chain and take it with me to RMS of Springfield. My Toyota client advisor is supposed to set me up appt after Labor Day. I have a problem with a warning "Moon Roof Open" that did not start until after nav installation, and a couple of physically damaged louvers in an air control vent, which was not apparent until after installation. We don't use the moon roof; it just happened to be on the vehicle we picked.

I don't want to disturb anything until these items and the wiring is verified. In other words, I think the installation may have some errors. Some of your comments support that theory.

When these are corrected I will tackle the bypass myself or with my techie friend who is excellent in installations and automotive problems. I do hate to take the unit out of the dash.....

if you are up to a drive to cabot, 15 mins north of little rock on 67/167, i should be able to fix it (and bypass it) for 40 to 80 bucks. it sounds like they may have the dimmer wire improperly connected, and i am very familiar with the bypass for the d3. to put your mind at ease, i have been instaling for 19 years now, and know of no difficulties with a highlander. feel free to pm me or call me at the shop mon-fri 9-6, sat 9-2 (501) 941-7499

  • 3 weeks later...

Will installermarc-- Cabot reply to my personal e-mail I will be in LR area OCT 30 and would be willing to swing by CABOT. I used to go near Cabot on way to Jacksonville LRAFB .

My e-mail is b11s02c20c04@yahoo.com . My phone # is (870)445-4454 lv message as I am out alot for an old lady. :)

Price is certainly reasonable. :D

However, I am still going to insist on dealership fixing other issues before bypass. I don't want to get the bypass and then go to them with the existing issues. They will just say I used unauthorized something or other and deny or charge for fixing what was pre-existing.... I'm sure you know what I am trying to say.

Thanks for offer. I had not check forum for several days due to busy schedule
