  1. By having a properly networked system you could,, Stream video from any phone (not just the one hardwired) to a rear entertainment screen Stream music from any connected phone on the network Get real time, updated maps to the built-in navigation system, without a dedicated phone Get real time traffic without the phone hooked up, or with Verizon, being on the phone For CarPlay or AppRadio, connect content from any phone in the car, without switching wires or dropping and adding a Bluetooth connection A WiFi enabled HU could also get real time car diagnostics and gauge information from ant
  2. I use a Verizon Delphi Connect 4G connected to the OBD II port on my Ford Edge, and it works great as a hotspot for the car. Since my iPhone is connected to the hotspot, I can make calls and use the internet at the same time. Not so if I was just useing my phone LTE for my data. The device is fairly inexpensive, about $99.00 one time cost, and $5 a month to add it to an existing data plan. I do wish that Pioneer would have built in WiFi capability in the NEX HU's so they could join a WiFi hotspot. I could see many areas that the unit could benifit from that type of persistant WiFi conn
  3. I am sure that CarPlay will use interal iOS maps only. But, this actually gives a lot more flexibility in the long run: 1) The iOS Maps are updated all the time and are free 2) Better intragration between the Maps and other apps on the phone without having to go though the built in NEX nav maps. The HeySiri functionality of iOS 8 will be very usefull, but again, it needs to be connected to a lightning cable to work. Personally, I would like the option to use Bluetooth connections for CarPlay, but the reality of it is I would keep it plugged in most of the time anyway to keep it c
  4. Interesting. I have not thought about an Apple TV setup. I have a verizon delphi connect 4G hot spot hooked up for my in car internet. Adding an AppleTV sounds cool. What do you find you are using the AppleTV for most?
  5. I am attempting to interject a little humor here, nothing more. Too much tension concerning the update. But, I will give my analysis, none the less. Apple will not wait for iOS 8 before approving devices for CarPlay. With the new phones coming out along with iOS 8 and the new kits (HealthKit, CloudKit etc) Apple will not want to bring attention to rolling out CarPlay so late. After all, it was announced over 16 months ago. Apple tends to tidy things up right before a feature goes live. The trademark registration of CarPlay a couple days ago would fall into that category.
  6. Is the camera connected to the brown RCA jack on the back of the HU, or the yellow one? It should be the brown one.
  7. Look for the CarPlay update Tuesday morning, Aug 5th. Just a guess of course, but looking at recent events, it makes sense.
  8. You must be one of those droid, apple haters I hear so much about. See, here in America, we have free choice. We can choose to buy the products that we like, and that work well for our lifestyle. I happen to buy apple products because they are well engineered and just plain work. I am also an engineer and a software developer who does not want to spend all of my time playing with widgets and the startup screen for kicks. I have more important things to do. You have the ability to choose what you want as well. You have that right. Now, as to some of your comments, I think they are be
  9. I don't think you are going to see a large number of apps for CarPlay at launch. For one, the number of developers allowed to create apps for CarPlay is very small. It's an invite only club right now. I have been an iOS developer for the last 5 years and many business apps in the store, and I can't get my hands on the CapPlay development kit. I have a few ideas I would like to try out, but until Apple opens up the box for all developers, we have to wait. This is frustrating for us, but smart on Apple's part. They would rather have a small number of apps that mesh tightly with the system
  10. I have the iDatalink maestro hooked up. Right now, all I get is steering wheel controls because I have it hooked up to the analog (1/8" mini remote connection). Once the Pioneer firmware update is out, I will be able to hook up the iDatalink to the 8 pin digital port, and have access to the stock Ford sync, USB and Bluetooth mic.
  11. Did you buy your NEX unit off eBay, a third party or from their website? Their website clearly states it all in plain English. It says that the items you describe will be in a future update. No bait and no switch. If you bought a NEX HU thinking that the maestro, avicsync and carplay were baked into the current firmware, then you did not do your research or your did not read the description page on the website. It's not buried in small print at the bottom of the page, it's right there under each feature. If someone sold you the unit with the promised features, I would cry to them in
  12. I believe that the maestro idatalink was advertisd to work with ford sync in a future update. The gauges were never advertised to work, but the steering wheel controls work just fine. I have a meastro hooked up to my 8000 on my Ford Edge. If you go to the maestro site, they show very clearly what functions are available for each car model and radio type. As far as the AppRadio, that feature is there. It just does not work very well. Avicsync is missing, but again, they said it would be released in a future update. It's not fale advertising if they say it is going to be in a future re

We must be talking about two different things. I was referring to folks calling into tech support for info on release dates. I don't know what in the heck you are referring to. Are you even old enoug to drive a car?

Got it... . I own a small 15 person company in NC, with a small three person support staff. Hell, I can't get those three to send out a constant message, I hate to think what it would be like herding cats at a large company like Pioneer. Hey, but I am on board with you guys. Let's get this show on the road Pioneer, and deliver the product that was promised.
  15. I agree, it's really is not that hard. But it is good to do as much research as you can before starting. Each car is a little differnt. Crutchfield is a fantastic resource. I used them to buy some parts for my install. They are little on the pricy side, but those guys know what they are doing, and their support team is top notch.
  16. It kind of depends on how much you want to do and how much you want to spend. I installed my 8000 in my 2010 Ford Edge, but I had never taken the dash apart before. I did a ton of research, and installed the HU many times in my mind, before cracking open the dash. I knew everything I needed to know before hand. I also did it in phases. I installed the backup camera and ran the wires weeks before the actual Pioneer install. I spend a lot of time hiding the wires and making it look stock. I also installed new speakers and an aftermarket powered sub-woofer and ran the power cable etc well

Guys, pleas remember when you call Pioneer and ask a question, you are not getting an official response. You are talking to some customer support person who would not have the inside scoop on release dates. 10 of us can call, and we may get 10 different answers. The only information you can hold them to is their official press releases and the web site info. Anything else is colored ballons.

For $1,400 (retail for the 8000, but who paid retail?) we were buying not just the current product, the the promise of a better product when the upgrades came. I love the multi touch screen, but I rarely take advantage of it. I spend more time cleaning the finger prints off the screen than I do pinching and zooming. But, it is by far the best HU that I have ever installed/used.

Ah, that's brings back memories for me. That was also my first navigation system. The laptop was about two inched thick and weighed 12 pounds.
  20. Interesting news about VW adding CarPlay in 2016. Also, Apple is adding wireless CarPlay connectivity in a future iOS version.

Let's have a poll. What would you rather have, if you could only have one in the next release... AvicSync or Carplay?

    My guess... about 75%

Some yahoo on the phone may or not speak for Pioneer. When they send a press release, or make an announcement, then you can believe it. Playing "who can I catch on the phone to tell me what I want to hear" is not a great way to get news. Calling into a help support line will get you a wide range of answers to any number of questions. I am giving my option here, just like every one else. My option here is based on the current situation concerning the CarPlay update for the NEX line of car receivers from Pioneer. In this case, they have not over sold, or reneged on any promise they gav
