Will I screw it up?

Just got my D3, waiting for a few more things in the mail before I start the install. I've noticed that there are quite a few wires and connections that I won't be using. I was thinking of simply removing the pins of the unused parts from the connector so I don't have a whole bunch of spaghetti behind the dash. For example, rear monitor output, video input, audio input, subwoofer output.

I'll be running a 4 channel amp with components all around so all I should need is the front and rear outputs and I may add the backup camera at some point so I'll keep that. Also keeping the mute wire to do the bypass. Is the system remote wire for the amp turn on?

Anyway, is this idea gonna work?

I wouldn't, just wrap them up because as soon as you take them out you'll want to add something later plus those few wires are not going to save that much space anyway.

Yes,blue/white wire is for amp turn-on.

If you really need the room behind the D3, then take a photo of the back of the connectors before de-pinning the wires you won't be using for reference in case you need to re-pin them in the future. Personally, I would suggest taping off the unneeded wires. To each his own.

 

Yes, the System Remote Wire from the D3 connects to the remote turn-on on your amp.

ok that's a good idea. I'd like to do it the way I described because I want to have enough room to mount the unit flush and all those wires may prevent that. I want to be sure however that I wont be confusing the head unit by having missing pins in the connector. I don't think it should be a problem but I want to avoid any problems

Well if you do decide to remove them from the harness and need to reinstall them in the future, here's a topic showing what goes where on that harness.

Or you could always take some detailed pics or draw some diagrams of it or even use a piece of tape on each wire and write where it goes on the tape for future reference.

awesome, thanks. it's a VW GTI Mk IV by the way. if you just throw it in the dash it sticks out a little and looks less than stock since everything in that part of the dash is very flush and flat. I modified the stock trim cage slightly to allow a flush install but there just isn't a ton of room back there for large bundles of wires which I have no use for.
