Your D3 didn't have basically a computer running it. Think how long it takes to bootup a laptop or desktop comp

are they not all computers just running a sort of os on it?

i personally don't see any difference between them then a couple more options like bluetooth / sd card etc. they both have a radio / dvd / navi system.

and a laptop coming out a hibernation mode is booted up very fast.

i dunno the answer to your question but my D3 was a hell of alot quicker then the f900bt i have My D3 booted in like max 5 seconds where my F takes 55 seconds

Even my D1 booted up faster than my F900BT. But with all the new features I'm more than happy to deal with a little longer boot time.

D-series all use a proprietary embedded OS which could be why they boot faster. The reason it boots almost instantaneously into audio mode is because the D-series has a completely separate system controller for A/V features. The navi computer has nothing to do with any A/V feature, and in fact, a D-series works even without booting the navi computer at all. It's almost like two separate machines integrated into one box.

Z-series uses Windows Automotive which is CE with extra junk stripped out which is why it boots a little slower than the D-series, but faster than the F-series. It does, however, have a separate system controller for audio features which is why you can get sound from some audio sources instantly, but you can't do anything until it's fully booted.

F-series uses full Windows CE, even the GUI libraries and Windows CE Explorer is present, that's probably why it boots the slowest. It may have a separate system controller for audio, but it seems it needs to be initialized by CE, so that's why it's silent for a time. You can't strip the extra junk either, because the 3rd party programs need those libraries... they are CE apps that use standard CE GUI libraries, not custom embedded apps like the Z-series uses.

yeah, that's a bit the same as with my kenwood dnx5220. it has 2 separate system, a kenwood part for the audio / video and a garmin part for the navigation.

the kenwood starts playing sounds after about 3 to 4 seconds and the navi starts a bit later. but the box is fully controllable when you hear the music ie volume, radio stations etc. that will be longer with a big usb stick full of music.

but since the f series runs full win ce, it makes it for me very acctractive for hacking. 8)

hence why i bought the kenwood for my wifes car and the pioneer for my own car...
