its a year old but just to clear it up for those that don't know

GPS is nothing more then 24 satellite's orbiting earth.each transmitting nothing more than its currant location and time.

your "GPS" navigation takes this info and figures out where on the earth it is...

those GPS tracking devices need to have a transmitter (GSM/GPRS..i.e. cell phone interface) that sends the DEVICES Location to a computer that records and or alerts you...

so unless your "GPS" navigation has a cell antenna it cant tell anyone/thing where its located

Hope this help clear things up

and sorry for bringing back a dead thread...

I have not done this, but if you are serious about tracking...

Buy the smallest cell phone you possibly can, open the gps case, glue it in complete with a charging cable, tie the charging cable into the gps power in so you would not see any wires on the outside. Do not enable any blue tooth as it would tip them off to see your phone answer, allso turn the ring and other sounds right down before putting it in.

Cell phones can be tracked, even some service providers offer a tracking service. If the unit is stolen, you would have a couple days battery power on the phone and when it gets installed in another vehicle, it would charge and be trackable. Emergency tracking can even be done with the cell phone off.

This would be a good method to find a stolen car as well.

The bigest negative to this would be the monthly cell phone charges.

As others have stated, the GPS receivers built into AVIC units only receive satellite broadcasts from which the unit triangulates your position. In order to track a vehicle (or AVIC), you'd need the ability to transmit GPS coordinates, for instance, over cellular networks.

It is not impossible that Pioneer would add a feature like that to a future high-end AVIC, but for the time being it does not exist. There aren't really any good alternatives to tracking the AVIC itself, but you can install devices to track your vehicle should it be stolen. Of course there's OnStar in some GM vehicles and the venerable Lo-Jack system, but there are also some less expensive and more flexible GPS/cellular-based tracking alternatives.

Personally I looked into the Entourage and Zoombak, which both run about $15 a month for basic tracking service. I ultimately decided against purchasing them because I live in a fairly safe city, but I would certainly reconsider if I ended up moving to some place a little more urban.
