ducatiboy
Ive been battling back and forth forever for a in dash nav unti for my truck im tossed between eclipse avn 6600 and the z1. That was my decision too, although I was also considering the Alpine W200 and nav update. anyone wish they went with a diff unit? and why? No, even with some of it's "faults" the Z1 is a pretty great unit. I'm not upset and I don't want to trade it for anything else. The Alpine was more $ and it was 2 units to install. It had the bluetooth cellphone link and a faster ipod, but I liked the ease of the install of the Z1 and the hard drive. The eclipse didn't have the hard drive or the bluetooth. They are all really great units, and you won't go wrong with any of them. I guess it depends on what you want it for and what features are important to you. ive what I can tell so far. Boot up times are longer and u cant pull music off your HD on to a cd then load in on your unit Yes the boot up time can be long. Till you are full function nav, it could be 20 seconds. But if you were on your ipod playing music, when you turn on the car, it takes less than 5 seconds before music plays again. Then another 5 or so before you can change the song or play something else. You get used to it.... it's not that bad. Even my wife's stock MDX nav system takes 10 seconds or so before the control screen is active. Well if you want to load music on to the hard drive, only the Z1 will do that (the alpine and eclipse will not). With store bought CD's it works really good. IF you want to transfer your MP3 collection from your hard drive, you have to burn audio CD's and then enter the names manually when it rips them. Or just burn MP3 Data CD's and play them in your cd drive. unless I am wrong if I pulled all my cd's that i have loaed on my computer onto a data disc am i correct in saying I cannot load them on to the HD of pioneer. If all your CD's fit on to "a" data disk, then just put that disk into the drive and listen away. For those who need many CD's to put their collection on, you can either make a few disks worth of MP3's and switch them in the drive.... but to load them on to the hard drive of the Z1 you would need to burn them as audio cd's. thank you in advance ive been reading this site for months lots of smart hackers where wow No problem, hope it helps. We are probably not as smart as you have heard

howarmat
Yep I am very happy with my purchase!
stryfox
The z1 is not perfect. But I believe it is the best in dash double dinn unit availiable. If I need to buy a new unit, I would get the same one.....z1
apax
i'm happy with my z1 and i was considering the eclipse 5495.....i'm glad i choose the z1 over the eclipse cuz my car club buddy got the 5495 and i checked it out and i wasn't impress with it.....
BigFloppy
Basically, I'm 99% happy with my Z1, if I could change one thing, it would be the Bluetooth, especially after installing and using a Parrot in the wife's car! Other than that, I also looked at the Eclipse and Kenwood solutions as well BUT with advice from the radio guy at the dealership, he advised me to go Pioneer... I would do it again (and did although a D2 for the wife's car... she doesn't need the bells and whistles like I do!!)
tillithz
no i dont regret it
bfly
Of those who are happy with the Z1, how many have used a different unit for any length of time? So far I think the Z1 stinks compared to the factory unit in my Audi and is marginally worse than the Alpine Blackbird navigation I had before the Z1 in my truck. As a navigation system, the routing engine is truly pathetic. Like I posted in another thread here, if Pioneer comes out with a Z2 update and it fixes a lot of the bugs then I will probably keep it. If they do not I will most likely go with the Alpine W205 or install a factory Toyota unit.
tillithz
used many others, including acura and honda. pioneer is comparable.

If they do not I will most likely go with the Alpine W205 or install a factory Toyota unit. I have owned: 05 Chrysler Factory Nav, 06 Acura Factory Nav, Pioneer Z1 I have used pretty extensively: Tom Tom version 5 and 6, Garmin C3 (ish, I don't remember the model name) If you want to talk about overall features, the Pioneer had the most... Lots and lots of features. If you want to talk about the best routing, well, depending on the route, some did better than others. Garmin and the Acura seem to have the most reliable (quickest) routing. Sometimes the Pioneer will do something silly, it will still get you there, maybe not the best way, but still get you there. I would say that no nav system is perfect. But the Pioneer Z1 is very good and comparable with every other system I have used. Throw in the entertainment features it also has (AV stuff) it's a really great system in my estimation. Now I just wish I could get the Mr T and Porn Star voices for the Z1 like I have for the Tom Tom. Nothing like "I pity the fool who don't make a left"
whtcrxghst
Used the blackbird for about ten days and I thought it was junk. If you want a portable nav, the Nuvi line is a much better option. The POI information was far worse than my Z1. Not to mention terrible battery life when I tried to use it in my other car. I think music storage, multimedia options (DVD, ipod, XM and Sirius, bluetooth), and $$$ is enough to make me get the Z1 over a portable or factory system Of those who are happy with the Z1, how many have used a different unit for any length of time? daveva
I think the routing sucks! I have called pioneer and complained several times . Darn thing takes me south and several miles out the way when I want to go north. Wanted to go to a restaurant and it took me to an empty parking lot. Should have told me to turn left but instead it told me to turn right. I hope the upgrade helps correct these problems. I put the same address search in my brothers nav and the routing was perfect. I don't know who makes the nav system for lexus but they sure could teach pioneer a thing or two
ufd108
I had a Garmin before buying a new truck with a double din opening and putting in the Z1. The Pioneer unit is nice in that it is an all-in-one unit, but the Garmin blew it out of the water in navigating. The Pioneer is feeble at best. If Kenwood ever releases the double din that you can get in Japan over here I would dump the Pioneer in a minute and get the Kenwood. Their navigation is made by Garmin.
