But was Pioneer referring to meteorological summer or astronomical summer (http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/news/meteorological-versus-astronomical-summer%E2%80%94what%E2%80%99s-difference)?

It matters, Pioneer!!!

(or, maybe, it doesn't)

I'm taking the Valve approach to this update. It will arrive when it arrives. I prefer for it to arrive "late" and run well, then arrive now and run like shit.

Mind you, if it takes till 2015 for this mystical update to show up, and then the update is pure garbage, duke nukem style, I'll jump ship to whatever Alpine launches the second I can.

When a company refers to a season, it is safe to assume they are referring to the astronomical season. It is at least partly a legal thing, to remove ambiguity in contracts and the like. PR tends to get scrubbed by lawyers in the same way.

Doesn't mean they will meet their dates, but it is what it is.

Back on May 15 at Pioneer's big demo event in San Francisco, Pioneer's Ted Cardenas was quoted as saying the CarPlay update would be available "weeks, not months, from now and free of charge." http://www.appradioworld.com/2014/05/breaking-pioneer-demos-apple-carplay-in.html?m=1

That statement may be partly to blame for why many expected that Pioneer would have released the firmware update by now. It's certainly why I keep hitting "refresh" on Pioneer's firmware updates page (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Support/Downloads). Sorry if my constant refreshes have prevented Pioneer from posting the update . . .

I'm going to stick with my initial assumption that Ferrari gets first crack at this. Once they release a car with Carplay the update will follow.

It's annoying that Pioneer customers have to wait for a firmware upgrade because Apple hasn't blessed their app. There are other issues that need to be corrected. I'd rather have a NEX firmware update and let Carplay come later.

No one knows what exactly will come in this next update. Regardless every whisper that has been heard has said that this update has been ready, and that Pioneer in no way planned on being made to wait this long.
