1. If I remember correctly, the yellow plug on models with the hifi option is for the speakers and go to the stock amp (these are not the high output speaker outs that you use if your not using an Amp). I spliced into these wires with RCA plugs and pluged them inot the amp outs on the back of the Z1.
2. must mean a Porsche 911 Turbo (also known as a 996 Turbo).
3. rcalcaide, I did installed a Z1 in my 2002 911 Cab. There is a picture of the install here on this site (just search for Porsche). You may also want to chack out Renntech.org under the 996 DIY section. I posted some picts and info about the connectors, etc. MIVEY.

Bad business

This is a little off product (not the AVIC-Z1, but speakers). I tried to purchase some Focal speakers from acaraudio.com and these guys misrepresented their ability to deliver. They charged my CC immediatly but after a week there was still no progress in the online order status (site still said 'verifying order'). When I complained of no progress on my order they told me the speakers would ship out the next day. I told them I would be canceling the order if it did not ship the next day. So to stall even further, these guys went to fedex.com and entered a false shipment so
5. Has anyone looked into the possibility of hacking the Gracenote Update process so that you could add other files (reformated mp3, bmp, etc) to the harddrive via CDROM? Pioneer recently released an update for the Gracenote database. From the update files, it appears it replaces the old database files with the new files provided by Pioneer. There is also a .inf file included with the update that I suspect is the install instructions. My guess is that every time you insert a CRROM into the AVIC-Z1 it looks for a .inf file. If one is present, it follows the .inf instructions. There is
6. Release Date June 8th 2006. The update process may be a clue to how we add our own files via CDROM.
7. I use photoshop on the Mac. However, if you just want a simple backgroud, you can use iPhoto to make is by taking one of you pictures, constraining it to the right size for the Z1 and adding any effets, etc you like. Once complete, export the file as a .jpg file type and your good to go. You can also use PowerPoint if you want to add text, etc....just remember to save the file as a .jpg.
8. If an installer will not put the flasher in (or atleast step aside for 5 minutes while you install it yourself), then they do not need your hard earned money. An option is to provide the installer with the directions for install without explaining what the circuit does (don't ask, don't tell policy). As another option, you can have your installer label the 3 wires the flasher curcuit needs and make sure they are accessable from under the dash. The install is pretty simple, so you could just do it yourself after the shop is complete. I would NEVER purchase and install the Z1 without
9. Just a moment ago I also received an email from Pioneer indicating my order has been shipped. The email included a copy of the invoice. I think if you are able to order from Pioneer, they have a product in hand. I assume I will get mine early next week at the latest.
10. I received a tracking number today for UPS. It says it was shipped on the 19th.
11. I ordered mine from Pioneer last night (7/18/06) and today it is showing 'Shipped' (and I canceled my backorder from Crutchfield today). Final cost including taxes & shipping = $136.10. Just checked today at 4:20pm Eastern and the button to order this item is now missing.

13. I had to fabricate the 'faceplate' (the entire trim piece that directly surrounds the Z1). After creating the trim, I sanded it and used Rust-Oleum Textured Paint for Plastic (Black) to get the color / texture to match. Thanks for the kind words. I am really happy with the finished look.
14. How to Make Custom Faceplates Like the Pros. This is the method I used and can be adapted for many types of faceplates (i.e. the piece of material that surrounds your stereo to fill in any gaps). This really applies when no dash kit / adapter is available for your make of car. 15. Yep. Those are BumperPlugs you're spying. No Bose here. The factory stereo / CD player was a single DIN Becker (now owned by Harman Kardon) unit with the Hi-Fi option (amp and 6 total speakers). Porsche introduced the optional Bose system in 2003 along with a 'MOST' system that uses fiber optics. Many people dislike the Bose / MOST system because it makes upgrading your system difficult. I really liked my factory unit and thought it produced great sound but it would not let me play MP3 disks and it did not support the iPod and bluetooth very well. This is what got me on the path to swi
16. eupjoria, No I only installed the Motorola Bluetooth kit in my wife's RAV4. I installed the Z1 in my 911. I did some checking for you and I think I know how the install shop will make the surround. I bet they will use a piece of the 12" by 12" ABS plastic that Metra sells (its a really easy way to make a surround faceplate for about $6) and they will cut it with a razor blade to fit the rectangular surround of the Z1 where needed and then using a blow torch to warm the plastic, they will bend it to fit the dash contour. If they are good, the piece will be sanded and painted with tex
17. Thanks I really appreciate the comments. I had a great time doing the Z1 install. As requested, here is a picture of the whole car. After this picture was taken I changed the side marker lights (orange in the picture) to the European style (clear lenses) but have not taken a more recent picture.
18. eupjoria, My wife has a 06 RAV4 and I recently installed Motorolia's BlueTooth Handsfree kit in it. The Z1 will easily fit in the dash once the factory stereo is removed. Once you pop off the silver (at least that's the color on my car) dash trim pieces to the left and right of the radio there are 4 bolts that hold the factory stereo in place. A bracket is used to mount the factory stereo and this bracket should be easy to use with the Z1. The actual install (mounting / wiring) of the Z1 is probably the easy part. The dash adapter is key to making the Z1 look factory. Everything betwee
19. UPDATE - Having Used the AVIC-Z1 for over a year, I really wish I had not purchased this unit. The key reason for this is the EXTREAMLY poor / slow iPod interface. It does not appear that any of the later releases remedy this (Z2 or Z3). Thought I would share the final install picture with the group. I did the install myself and took a few pictures along the way in case others want to do this. If you have a 1999 - 2002 Porsche 911 these pictures may help with your install. I also used Ducatiboy's flasher circuit to enable more functionality while driving. I think my insta
20. germiymaca, I just completed my install of the AVIC-Z1 in a 2002 Porsche 911. If you are handy with this kind of stuff, it is not really very hard. I was unable to find any dash adapters or wiring harness adapters. You will probably not find anything either for your SLK. The wiring was really not difficult for my install. I have a wiring diagram for the Porsche and I my stock radio manual had a wiring schematic in the back. Check your owners manual for your car and current stereo. It may have a wiring diagram included. You may also be able to find a wiring diagram for your st
