  1. But wouldn't that just prove that the Z2 is bypassable? I'm looking to see if I buy the $250 update disk with new features and maps, that I can still have a bypassed AVIC-Z1. Apparently AVIC-Z2s are just AVIC-Z1s with newer maps and maybe an improves alogrithm for plotting routes. Something software changeable. I am happy with my Z1 as it is (fully bypassed). I could be happier if I got improvements to the operating system of my Z1 and some newer maps (can never have enough updated maps I suppose). However, I don't want to do that if I can no longer make changes on the fly without having to pu
  2. So, with all of this talk about yellow dotted Z2 boxes being bypassable, does this mean that if you already have a bypassed AVIC Z1, that you can safely buy the newly updated maps and still have all the functionality you have now with Ducatiboy's bypass that has been working like a charm for me since August of 2006? I don't even know if I need the new maps, but I would like to have all the new updated features of a Z2 while still enjoying my Z1. If new maps come as an added bonus on top of it, then great. Am I correct in assuming this or do I need to just stay with the old maps on my Z1?
  3. I need a good address for my waypoints though. I don't want to just, for example, pick any old McDonalds out in the middle of nowhere and assume it is going to get me to my final destination quicker. If I force it to take me to Bedford, Pennsylvania, I think it has to at that point adopt the route being shown from Mapquest, Googlemaps and Yahoo and route me around the rest of Western Pennsylvania and then along New York's border with Pennsylvania and Lake Erie. I mean the route I want to take is the one that takes me around the Western part of Pennsylvania and then into New York, through Buff
  4. Road speed? I see one area where I can change that, but it gives me 30, 40 and 50. So, you are saying that I can change that to what I would really drive (65 or 70MPH)? Okay. That might get me down from 14 hours. However, the miles are still higher with the AVIC-Z1 than any distance quoted from Mapquest, GoogleMaps and Yahoo.
  5. At this point in time, you'd be better off not buying anything unless it will be a digital TV tuner. Any of the old analog TV tuners are going to be obsolete here in the US in another 18 months. I'd hate for you to plunk down some serious coinage only to find out that in less than 2 years time, you have a doorstop deadweight and would be in the market again looking for a tuner that could actually pick-up your local stations.
  6. How does the AVIC Z1 calculate its time? It has me taking 29N to 695 to 83N and so on, everyone else wants to take me around the Western border of Pennsylvania (close to Pittsburgh) and then loop around the Northern part of Pennsylvania, to head into New York, through Buffalo, across the Peace Bridge, and into Ontario, Canada. If things are this off to get from Maryland to Toronto, I have little confidence in what it will tell me to do once I need to drive from Toronto to Ottawa, and then all the way back down to Maryland.
  7. Mapquest claims 8 hours 51 minutes and 540.59 miles total. Highlights are 29N to I-70W, to I-76W, to I-79N, to I-90E, to I-190N, to Peace Bridge, to QEW to Queens Quay W. Yahoo Maps claims 8 hours and 24 minutes and 494.7 miles total. Highlights are 175E, to 29N, to I-70W, to I-99N, to US-220N, to US-322W, to PA-970, to I-80, to US-219, to I-86W, to I-90E, to I-190N, to Peace Bridge, to QEW, to Garden City Skyway, to QEW, to James Allen Bridge, to QEW, to Gardiner Expressway, to Spadina and Lake Shore Blvd, to Brenner Blvd, to Queens Quay. Google Maps claims 9 hours and 2 minutes and
  8. If you don't mind, tell me more. You are saying that with waypoints, I can touch the screen and make it use the highways that Yahoo, Mapquest or Google offers up as driving directions? Rather than looking at 8x10 printer paper in my lap, I'd rather my $2K navigation system talk me through Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York and Ontario province.
  9. I have an AVIC-Z1 and am going to be driving from Maryland to Toronto, Canada and then from Toronto to Ottawa, before returning to Maryland. Looking at my home address and the address of the first hotel in Toronto, using Yahoo Maps, Google Maps and Mapquest, I get routes that claim to only take me 9 hours to get to my destination. Inputting the same hotel address into my Z1, I get a route that appears to be taking me the long way, as the time it says to travel there is 14 hours and 22 minutes. I'm already less then thrilled to be driving anywhere for 9 hours, but that sounds better than 14 hou
  10. Isn't Mass selected as your default state? I'm in Maryland and I only get Maryland streets. So, when I want to cross the border to go to West Virginia or into Virginia or to Pennsylvania, I have to physically go in to change my state before I do an address search for it. Sounds like you did not do that.
  11. At first it was that I was not even getting the disc recognized. Now the AVIC recognizes the disc. It even lists all of the photos, but each photo will always come up as corrupt. Sometimes it will say it is not a JPG or JPEG and that is how is saved, and it has the .jpg extension. I've burned the disc so that it is PC only. I've burned it so it was Mac only. I have burned it so that it was Mac and PC compatible. I've been told it may have to do with the way Macs create a data fork that a Windows PC (the Z1) does not know what to do with. I've burned the disc as an ISO 9660. I have made sure t
  12. I'd like to get those too. However, I'm still struggling to even get my Z1 to recognize any discs I have burned so far. Maybe this can't be done using an Apple Macintosh? Will I have to get a friend with a Windows PC to burn my images to a CD for me? I have used Photoshop, GraphicConverter, Preview, PictureIt, iPhoto and Quicktime Pro. I have made 9 worthless CDs so far. I have at least 100MB worth of data on the CD.
  13. I have a 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara. I would like to have some Suzuki logos done or an actual photo of the Grand Vitara jazzed up with neon glow or something.
  14. I agree with dsf3g. Here in Columbia, Maryland, it is not really worth it to have. I do think it is worth it in D.C. though. I probably won't pay for it next time my subscription comes up for renewal.
  15. Good point. I wonder how many people here complaining about the XM sound quality are listening with factory stock systems that are nothing to brag about. While your Acura may have a killer sound system and Dolby 5.1 built-in, most vehicles do not, and it is those people who might be bitching the most about the XM sound quality. With 8 Polk Audio speakers in my SUV (9 if you include the 12" subwoofer), two amps (one for the head unit and one just for the subwoofer), soundproofing material, good cables and wires, professional installation, etc. I'm happy with MOST of the XM satellite channels.
  16. Can you get a different installer? This is not the hardest thing for a professional to do. So, I'm wondering if you are asking for more trouble down the road. Everyone needs a first time to do something, but I don't want someone learning for the first time on my ride and have me pay for it. The installer doesn't speak English very well. He has never done a Pioneer AVIC-Z1 installation before, and he is struggling with the concept of navigation up front with a radio and DVD playing in the back with headphones. I can easily see you being on here in a week or a month from now asking for more hel
  17. Countdown, I think it is your speakers and your amp. However, some channels are sounding like they are coming out of a tin can. SOME, not all. In my experience, the following channels are VERY good. I'm talking sound-wise and not necessarily what they play. LOL!!! Channel 8 - The 80's Channel 80 - The Move Channel 81 - BPM Channel 83 - Chrome Channel 62 - Suite 62 Channel 64 - The Groove Channel 65 - The Rhyme Channel 66 - RAW Channel 67 - The City Channel 90 - Fuego Channel 71 - Watercolors Channel 72 - Beyond Jazz Channel 115 -Radio Disney Channel 116
  18. Yeah, but at least the "navigation" of the AVIC-Z1 is pretty good.

    Z2 Announced

I bought my AVIC-Z1 back in August 2006 and I have everything that you guys are describing above. How is that possible? I have restaurant icons when I drive by McDonalds, Subway, Uno, Pizza Hut, etc. I see the icon/logo for Exxon, Chevron, Shell, etc. I have 3-D, I see water, grass, buildings and ATMs on my map.
  20. I own the GEX-P5700. It is what it is. It works as advertised. Depending on where you live you may get more or less channels than someone in a different area, but the picture, when it receives one is acceptable (at least here in Maryland). I'm equidistant between Washington D.C and Baltimore, Maryland. I get about 5 VHF channels and 6 UHF channels. It's fine in a pinch. Between the tv options and dvds playing in the vehicle, I am satisfied. I am more interested in getting a digital tv tuner though since the FCC allegedly is going to force all broadcasters to do away with analog broadcasts and
  21. Hello. This past summer I purchased a Pioneer AVIC-Z1 along with an ND-BC1 camera, GEX-P10XMT XM Radio, ND-BT1 bluetooth hands-free adapter, and a GEX-P5700TV tuner. They all work wonderfully. However, I am concerned about what plans Pioneer has for accomodating those of us who bought the GEX-P5700 TV Tuner when the United States goes all digital in 2008 or 2009? In our homes there are set-top converters that will let people with older analog tvs not capable of receiving HDTV or DTV, still be able to watch their programs OTA. In the case of our AVIC-Z1 module, have any of you heard of Pioneer
  22. Thanks for all of the quick replies people. I will relax now as it seems this is not a major problem, but just normal behavior for an LCD touchscreen.
  23. Is the cold weather (assuming you have it where you live) affecting your AVIC-Z1 in the morning? When I get into my vehicle in the morning (garage parked), when I back out of the garage, the screen is REALLY dim and dark. It may take up to a mile or two before I can easily read/see the screen. Why does it act like an old TV that needs to warm up before displaying its full brightness?
  24. Haven't heard Sirius, but XM is not as bad as I thought it would be. The worst channels are the traffic channels. Traffic and weather sound VERY much like out of a tin can with nylon string. What the heck is going on there? The Dance channels, Urban, Top Hits and some Rock channels all sound more than fine. Jazz and Blues is fine too. The Comedy channels don't sound too good. The French channels are AWFUL!!!!! It's a waste of bandwidth. Shame, since I like the French language.
