05Stang-GT
Very cool, did you have to modify the conector so that it wouldnt lock into the iPod? Another question, what the heck is the wire with the resistor in it?

Another question, what the heck is the wire with the resistor in it?
I used a dremel tool to cut off the teeth that lock the conector in the ipod. The wires are for 2 blue leds that light up the opening when the ipod is not inserted.
05Stang-GT
Cool, what do you have proximity switch imbedded in the dock or something to controll the LED?

I wired it so they come on when the lights are turned on. They are dim and if the ipod is inserted you cant see the blue light because the ipod screen is much briter. 05Stang-GT
Ahh, ok, so when the iPod is pluged into the pioneer adaptor the screen is lit up...interesting.
Marauder
Here are some pictures of my AVIC-Z1 installation in my 2004 Mercury Marauder. It was done by Sound Advice, which is now a division of Tweeter. I didn't take a picture of the GPS antenna, but it's mounted right in the middle of the dashboard (very close to the windshield), and it seems to track perfectly in that location. Also not pictured is the JL Audio 10" subwoofer I had installed at the same time, with an Alpine monoblock amp to power it. This replaces the 6" "subwoofer" that was installed at the factory, that bottomed out at a moderately low volume. After hearing (and feeling) the new one, I'm almost embarassed that I had the car for two years before finally replacing the factory sub... Here are two views of the Z1. The gray frame around the Z1 looks brighter in the picture due to the flash, but in actuality it matches the rest of the dash very well. This is where they Velcro-mounted the microphone, over the speedometer between 75-80 MPH (shouldn't be in the way there, right? ) And here's where they put the IR transmitter for the steering wheel controls, in the overhead console. There is some sluggishness with the controls, as would be expected with any IR system, but it usually doesn't completely miss any button presses. ducatiboy
Beautiful! I just love the Mercury Marauder!
05Stang-GT
Looks great! Wonder why they used the IR version versus the wired version? Do you know if that bezel was a part they had or something custom?

Would the SWI-PS have worked with the Z1? I'm fairly certain, from the way the installer was explainng how they would install it, that they did make the bezel themselves; there wasn't an off-the-shelf part that would have fit properly. 05Stang-GT
Yeah Im pretty sure the SWI PS will work, thats the one I am planning on getting. What functions are you able to controll with the steering wheel controls, after reading the instructions on PACs site, I wasn't sure what I would have? I wasn't able to get the Z1 as far back into the dash as they did...guess I need to work at it a bit more....
NYRngrs24
Marauder - i have a swi-ps for my avic d1. works great. very very very small delay. but that's it. not as bad as IR. I don't get why installer places dont have these or know of them. I went to a few install shops to buy one, and only one of them had it. and one told me it wont work in my car. what a dumbass. its universal. anyway. it works and was easy to program, and DO NOT need a remote to program it. I did. It works great, but there are only 9 things it will send to the head unit. But it handles most of the buttons most cars have.

They did ask me which functions I wanted, because there are several more available that can be assigned to any of the four steering wheel buttons, but those were the most convenient for me. The other functions included mute, previous track, preset up and down, and band (there may have been more, I just don't remember them). But I'm not sure if those were features only of the IR control, or if they would also be available with the SWI-PS. The installer did have to do some cutting behind the unit to get it to fit into the Marauder's dash. I saw another Pioneer system (a D1, I think) installed in someone else's Marauder, and he told me that he had to cut behind it to get it to fit flush with the dash as well... It would have been much easier to install as well, without having to mount the IR transmitter and program the IR commands into the unit...
