  1. thanks again to everyone who put this together; I was 2 years overdue and finally did the upgrade today. only took 100 years for me to find my 2.5" IDE adapter buried in my garage. and now that I've upgraded to 2010 I see it's been a year since Garrett posted this thread for 2010. so is 2011 in the pipeline? thanks again! edit: d'oh nevermind I see there's a thread already in 'General' re: 2011. I'll wait it out. I see that in 2009 or 2010 ? they expanded the high-resolution map coverage a bit. I live in San Francisco and part of it was hi-res and of course I lived in the
  2. it is definitely -slower- on the Z3 at least in my experience. How much longer? I never timed it exactly but it's easily 10 seconds longer maybe(?)
  3. I know some guy who isn't me and he seeded that thing for nearly 500GB uploaded and had to take a break. Plus 9GB eats a lot of disk space. hang in there, you'll get the file.
  4. check out the ZAGG site and their invisibleSHIELD products. Theirs are a bit thicker than most but i use it for my ipod and phone, too.
  5. check earlier posts, essentially the $5 route means to unlock your HDD, the drive will be wiped clean in the process. so any music, address info, map configs, images, etc etc will be gone. To keep your data you need to go the more expensive route. (note the same company makes both applications...Capitalism, baby!) But yeah if that data isn't important to you, go for the cheaper unlock!
  6. interesting, i wonder if the Z* units do some sort of low-grade DRM. Like, just a simple hash against the unit's serial number or some other value. Then all the files will only play on that unit. (?) I think I'll poke around too for fun
  7. I downloaded the ginormous Z3 image via BitTorrent and did the procedures as listed here in this thread and in the Z3 drive image thread. Now my Z2 is a Z3! the only downside I see is that it appears to take a bit longer to boot up once you start the car. But hey not that big a deal considering what I paid for the upgrade. many thanks to Hyperite, AFMagnum, garrettoomey, and everyone else who's contributed to all the R&D! I'll keep seeding the image for as long as I can, I think I can probably hold onto it through July. -Matt
  8. and not only that, you can't choose between 12/24 hour time format, and the time contains a leading zero. e.g.: "04:12" which can be 4 in the morning, or 4 in the afternoon. Sure you can look out the window and make a pretty good guess. Either ditch the leading zero, or make it switchable. Just one of the many annoyances of the Z series
  9. YOU LIE! GARMIN ARE TEH WIZZARDS!!!1
  10. this sounds like a pretty good idea..please post your results! thanks!
  11. take a close look at antenna placement. you could be getting some bad multipath situation going if the antenna is at a bad angle or is nestled down around too much metal.
  12. true, it's more the 'this antenna needs power' than actually requiring an amp. but then, by powering the antenna, the weak signal is amplified so it can be sort of a semantics thing. my car has an in-glass diversity antenna and while I can't make use of the diversity system anymore, I did need an antenna adapter with an in-line 12v power connection.
  13. sorry, as of the 2007 MY this data must be taken from the CAN-BUS. There is no discrete wire with analog signalling for VSS. There are interfaces out there that can talk to the CAN-BUS and output a VSS signal. Check out my DIY at vwvortex: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3275461
  14. I think that this is exactly the problem. The Avic doesn't "pre-load" an mp3. It just waits until one song is finished and then goes on the the next. yep to do it effectively, the device has to buffer the next track as another buffer is feeding the old track to the decoder. more engineering than these sorts of engineers get paid to do not to mention, it's a very single-oriented world now. look at the iTunes site. Album-oriented music and mix albums are just lost in the flood of the Timberlake and American Idol singer of the week material.
  15. your post is a bit unclear; are you talking about mp3 data CDs or mp3s that you've ripped to audio CDs? I'm assuming you mean data CDs. this is not so much a limitation of your CD software or the encoder you use, but the way the Z2 plays back mp3 files. It is uncommon for mp3 player devices to be able to properly handle gapless playback between tracks. Not that it's a big technical hurdle, but many players can't even do ID3 tags correctly, so you can guess how much attention gets paid to gapless playback capability I can say that using an iPod with the adapter, I get gapless playb
  16. yeesh, yet another palm-into-forehead courtesy of Pioneer.
  17. I'll chime in with a somewhat relevant gripe here. The clock readout on the Z2 (and Z1?) is completely counter-intuitive. Note that it only does a 12 hour display, and yet they felt the need to give it a leading zero if the time is before 10 o'clock. e.g.: 05:41 Maybe it's just me, but I use 24 hour time a lot in my job and seeing a leading zero automatically makes me think that it's an AM time that I'm looking at. That said, it's not as if I look at the clock and think it's AM when it's clearly after 12 noon It's yet another one of those small annoyances with the design; some

    Z2 and iPod

you're absolutely right and actually yeah when you really want to hear something you'll hunt it down. but that's a very long time, and you have to keep looking back at the screen to do all this. there should be a way to select a letter or a range of letters. another big design lameness: whenever you're browsing for songs (let's say by albums) and exit the album you've selected, the parent menu then returns to the very first screen, the top of the current list you're browsing. so woe be to you if you change your mind or chose the wrong album, because you have to start all over from "A"
  19. kevin, i would look in the FAQ and via search in the MkIV forum over at VWVortex. Also, the electronics/radio forum. your answers are probably in there somewhere.
  20. yep, MKV (2007) model. well so far I like mine quite a bit. Sure it has its quirks, but nothing major. It did try to get me to do infinite u-turns the other day to get to a street that wasn't there. that was fun To get it working with your late MkV, you'll need to get the VSS signal from the CAN-BUS. There are at least two interfaces that I know of that can do that. The one I used might be on the market now (I have a beta unit) This install writeup I did for the vwvortex forums might be useful: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3275461
  21. geoffp, what year/model is your Jetta? is it a MkV?
  22. yep I've had the same luck with my Z2 after nearly 15 trips the same way each time, and it's about 16 mile trip. This is what the "knowledge"base says: it probably works in a few lab/simulation situations but doesn't seem to be road-tested very well.
  23. Maybe from this angle there's more GPS multipath occurring? Skeetdogg, can you try just temporarily relocating your antenna to a flat surface?
