Monirul79
What are you using to make the cover?
ducatiboy
I had this theory of making one of these, but doing it right. Getting a mold and making it out of plastic and having fake buttons and silk screened words and all to make it look like a crappy stock stereo or something. I haven't really looked into it too much and it would cost a fortune to do all that unless anyone has any companies overseas that could make something like this. All my contacts are for medical not consumer and are quite expensive. Not sure how many I could sell for the initial investment. I'm guessing it would be close to $5K-$10K. But it's just a guess. There does seem to be some interest in this though.
JasonH
I think it would be much easier (and cheaper) to just dremel off the front of a factory radio.
sdGTS
Here is my cover. It's pretty raw but it does a good job of covering the Z1. It is actually just the face of my old stock stereo that I rigged with some paperclips to hang over the Z1. It fooled my brother while he sat in my car. He just thought I did a piss-poor job of putting in the stock radio. Aside from my GPS receiver on the dash, from the outside you wouldn't guess there is a Z1 in there. It's not a perfect cover or deterent but its something. ducatiboy
Very nice. I had the idea to do that with my stock radio as well, just never tried removing the face of it. Really good job.
sdGTS
Thanks Steve. My old radio made it easy for me. The front face came off very easily (sliding 8 tabs all around the front) as one unit (buttons and LCD) so all I had to do was find a way of mounting it over the Z1. Luckily their is a tiny crevice in between the Z1 and the center console where paper clips fit real nicely. Funny thing is, if I wanted, I could just snap the face back on my old stereo and it will work perfectly (just in case I wanted to sell the old stereo).
jsiegerm
Being a victim of auto theft in the past, I didn't want my Z1 to be added temptation. I fabricated a cover from a 4.25" by 7.25" piece of stock ABS plastic. It looked great, but still like I was trying to hide something, so I added some personal touches. Bottom line... I don't think anyone will be breaking into by car to steal my grocery list. Because all installs are a little different, I don't think this is something that I can create as a one size fits all. If you are interested, I can cut you a piece of plastic to whatever size you need to cover your Z1. Depending on size, it should only run around 6 bucks. If your intersted, just pm me. tech10002
Where did you find the ABS stock? That's a pretty cool idea. I was thinking you could make it even better by taking an old single DIN aftermarket cassette radio and glueing the faceplate on the ABS at the top. It would look like you have a single DIN cheapo aftermarket radio with an install adapter. I might even be willing to pick up the $20 Kraco at Walmart and cut it up. :)
