Drive Image/ISO begging and supplying

I have installed it on my original drive, after upgrading to a hitachi 80 gb I too was getting random reboots, so I decided to unlock my stock drive and reload this image onto it, works great, but it is much slower then the hitachi I was testing with which is a 5400 rpm drive, now I am thinking I'd like to try a 7200 rpm hdd. Maybe the reboots are something to do with the overall drive capacity,has anyone drive to cut the drive size of 60gb or 80gb drives down to just 40gb or 30gb and see if the reboots stop? I forgot to disable the password and locked my hitachi drive and the hddunlock program doesn't support hitachi drives so I have a brick, so I'm stuck with my original drive for now, but I would like to upgrade it to at least a 5400 rpm drive and I think I'm gonna try a 7200 and see if that's even faster then the 5400 I tried. At least I know I have a stable image on the stock drive just no extra music space and a much slower boot time, but at least the password on that drive is now disabled properly. I'll post back with the results of a 7200 rpm drive.

Sorry guys, I wasn't able to get the instructions up tonight, but if you look through the stickys in Hacks/Mods section of this forum (http://www.avic411.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=20) you should be able to figure everything out.

 

Here's the short version:

 

1. Pull your Z1 drive and unlock it. Instructions here:

2. Download the Z2 image

3. Uncompress the downloaded files using WinRar.

 

4. Restore the uncompressed image to your Z1 drive using Acronis True Image Home 10.

 

5. Insert the drive back into your Z1 and let your system update. In less than 5 minutes, you will have a Z2.

This would be great if we can get faster drives working.

The device ID stays the same. I had this same question when updating mine and I made sure to write it down before I imaged my drive. After converting to a Z2, I checked my ID and it was the same as before.

I saw someone mention the rebooting issue and he fixed it by removing his paired bluetooth devices. Not sure how they would still be there after swaping the drive though. Anyway thought I would mention it. I have my 60gb drive that came from my PS3, going to give that a try once I pick up a copy of acronis.

I just checked PS3 drive is SATA, we need an ATA don't we? Ah well excuse to buy a 7200 drive once some finds out the reboot issue I will pick on up.

Random rebooting shouldn't have anything to do with the bluetooth. The reboot timing changes depending on different variables of the drive and AVIC memory status. After removing the pairing, anybody who thinks that solved the problem has probably just gotten lucky on a few extended-time resets.

 

That said, you could do a 100% bitwise copy from a factory drive to a new one, only to find out it will reboot randomly, or worse- reboot into the "HD cannot be accessed" message.

 

It's drive dependant.

I agree. Normally, the system reboots itself on memory access violation, or when the drive locks itself due to excessive shocks and vibrations. We may have to find an automotive drive. Anyone has any ideas where to find a 40GB Toshiba automotive hdd?

I ddidnt even have my phone hooked up and it still reboots every 10-30min. While driving or sitting still. Its defently the drive specs. I this morning used a 5400rpm hitachi and that reboots as well.

anyone resolve the random rebooting yet? I have a friend bringing me a 30gb hitachi today along with a toshia and another version of a seagate. i'll post my results later if they work.

I believe we should be looking at power draw... I tried a 7200rpm drive and have ruled out vibration and heat as a cause of the reboots. You wanna see the unit reboot itself really quick, clone the image to a 7200 rpm drive. The thing reboots every 2-10 minutes.

 

I drive a M3, and drove around like I was at the track last night through some back roads. I can pretty much guarantee 100% that vibrations is NOT the cause of reboots. The unit will reboot on it's own within 10 mins sitting on the driveway. Heat, I'm not 100% sure yet, but I will verify tonight after I rig the HDD so it's external as a test. I'm almost certain it's power draw. I've had the thing reboot when the HDD was still pretty much cold.

 

Anyone wanna build an external power supply for the HDD?

OK, if it is the power draw, is it due to the lack of power supplying to the HDD or to the whole unit. The later is easier to check if we can run a bigger wire from the battery to the unit.
