AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 Upgrade to AVIC Z3 w/2009 Maps

NOTICE: This upgrade is not for beginners.

 

The process involves opening your computer and connecting your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 hard drive to your computer motherboard. If you are not comfortable with this, do not attempt it.

Great news! We now have a way to update the maps and software on our AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3s to make them AVIC Z3s with 2009 maps. Please follow the instructions below but remember this is not a forum on how to setup bittorrent software or newsgroups. Please use Google or follow the links below for more information on those subjects.

 

Things to know before you begin:

1. You need to spend money: $50 if you want to save the data on your current Z1/Z2 drive, or around $12 if you don't care about the data.

2. You may need to load new software.

3. This process is not fool proof. You could render your AVIC Z1/Z2 unusable without completing the steps properly. You are implementing this update at your own risk.

4. Pioneer does not approve of this process. Again, you are implementing this update at your own risk.

 

STEP 0 - Software Installation and Hardware Purchase

A. Download and install WinRAR (or similar archiver):

STEP 1 - Download The AVIC Z3 w/2009 Maps Hard Drive Image

The file you download above will give your torrent client the information it needs to download the image.

Torrent is file sharing, so if you download the 8.31gb file, you need to commit to uploading atleast 8.31gb. If you are not willing or able to seed it, then DON'T download it. That is the only way to make it work. It will probably take a couple of days to DL and a couple of weeks to UL.

STEP 2 - Remove The Hard Drive From Your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3

(For more information on this step, refer to Z1 HDD FAQ: viewtopic.php?t=728)

Power up your Z1/Z2, power tilt your screen all the way down like you are going to insert a CD then turn off the power to the unit (turn off the key in your car). The hard drive is located beneath the CD slot. The screw size it T8 torx. Lay a soft cloth on the touch screen to protect it from you. Loosen the 2 torx screws and remove the plastic cover trying not to drop it on the screen. Don't drop your screwdriver either. Set this aside. The screws are locked into the cover so you should not have a problem with losing them but don't take chances. The hard drive sits in a metal tray that slides in/out of the opening you just revealed. There is a flexible plastic tab that you can grab with your fingers and pull. The drive will slide out. It fits snuggly but doesn't require much effort to remove. Turn the drive over and set it on your desk, counter, whatever but use one of those soft cloths (I believe in being nice to this drive since without it I have a very expensive doorstop). There are 4 #1 phillips head screws. Remove them carefully. Do not crush the drive. Do not squeeze the drive with your fingers in the center; you can kill it this way. These are fragile to physical pressure (all laptop drives are). Always handle the drive from the sides. Instructions curtsey of Pulp_Fiction

 

STEP 3 - Connect Your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 Hard Drive To Your PC

Power off your PC and connect your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 hard drive as the master drive on your secondary IDE channel using the IDE Hard Drive Adapter. Make sure there are no other devices on this channel. Power on your PC.

 

STEP 4 - Unlock Your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 Hard Drive

To Save Your Data: Follow the instructions from A FF Repair Station, http://www.hdd-tools.com/products/rrs/howto/ to unlock your drive. Once you create a log-in, the process is automated. You will need your unlock code at this point, so if you haven't purchased a license from the link above, do so now.

If you don't care about your data: Use HDD Unlock Wizard, http://www.hddunlock.com/ to unlock your drive. You will need your unlock code at this point, so if you haven't purchased a license from the link above, do so now.

 

STEP 5 - Disable the Security Lock on Your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 Hard Drive

(This step is optional but highly recommended. If you fail to disable the lock and need to pull your drive from your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 again, you will have to pay another $42.37 to unlock it.)

Create a boot disk using the Magic Boot Disk link from HDD GURU above. Follow Pulp_Fiction's directions for disabling security under the question, Q: How do I disable the lock on my HDD here: viewtopic.php?t=728

 

STEP 6 - Create a Backup of Your Current AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 Hard Drive

Use Acronis True Image Home 2010 to create a backup image of your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 hard drive. This step is optional but good practice incase you have problems later on.

 

STEP 7 - Restore the AVIC Z3 Image to Your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 Hard Drive

Use Acronis True Image Home 2010 to restore the .tib file (unrar first if needed) to your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 hard drive.

Alternative: you may restore only the LDATA and SDATA partitions leaving your personal data (USER) and stored music (MSV) intact.

 

STEP 8 - (Optional) Remove Copyright Data on Bootup

Complete the following if you don't like seeing the copyright data when your system boots up: Navigate to the BG\COPYRIGHT folder on the LDATA partition of your AVIC hard drive. Rename the CPYCUSTOM.BMP and CPYDEFAULT.BMP to CPYCUSTOM.BMP.OLD and CPYDEFAULT.BMP.OLD.

 

STEP 9 - Install AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 Hard Drive Back Into Your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3

Reverse the instructions for Step 2. Once installed, power on your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3. You will see something along the lines of updating the system and it will have 2 parts. Then it will reboot and everything will be a factory fresh AVIC Z3 w/2009 Maps!

For Customers using AVIC-Z1:

It includes all the feature updates that were shipped with the Z2 and Z3 such as customizable splash screen, enhanced VR, 3D map view, 3D landmarks, etc.

 

For Customers using AVIC-Z2 or AVIC-Z3:

-2009 Map database with over 12 million POI

-GraceNotes database update

- XM Satellite Radio Icon update

The other operations are essentially the same as those at the time you purchased the hardware. Use the Operation Manual included in the hardware package as your primary reference.

You can upgrade the stock drive for $5 if you don't care about the data on the drive, it's a simple procedure, but there is always a risk when removing hardware is involved, but for the savvy it is not expensive, and I have started a thread for teating different hdd's in hope that in the end we can increase boot speed! This has been asked in this forum over and over, and now we can find a way, and the more people who help the better our results, so if you can't spare a new drive, or a used drive, or $5 and some common sense, then stay away from this and enjoy the system the way it is, some of us would like to get more out of thier system if at all possible, and this image makes that possible.

Yes, the unlocking tool needs the drive connected to the secondary master position, or else it won't find the drive. You can't get that kind of access through the usb interface. If you want to unlock your Z1 drive that's what you need to do.

chidoc, is a smart person! And I'm not making fun, it takes a smart person to see something like this, want it and walk away. Please people, I can't stress this enough, if you read over this and don't feel confident to be able to do this, DON'T DO IT. It takes a very smart person to understand their limitations and realize they are over their head. I really want to avoid a mess of people posting they messed up their $1500+ Z1 cause they wanted it to be a Z2 and wanted to save the $250. Always better to be safe than sorry. AFMagnum did a great job writing this up, but if you don't feel comfortable doing it or won't get too angry if you mess up your Avic, please don't do it or ask a computer savvy friend for help.

Not to get off topic, but i looked at the upgrade CD and everything is in .DAT files which i can't extract to debug. I was hoping to break it down and find the algorythm but no luck. If anyone can get the info out of the .DATs i'd be happy to take a look and see what i can pull out as far as the algo goes.
