1. DB, you are correct. I had an older Motorola hands-free kit before I upgraded to a Treo 650 and that didn't use Bluetooth. It had a mute output to go to the radio to mute it when a call was received.
 2.
It IS due to heat, but I don't think it gets up to 122 degrees in my car. Besides, my iPod lives in my glove box, and it has been there for at least a year and a half, and has never had any problems with its hard drive in that time.
If you had ever designed electronic systems you wouldn't make this statement. The heat generated by electronics these days is incredible. The heat generated by the CPU in your PC is the equivalent of a 75 Watt or 100 Watt light bulb in a small, closed box. Cooling electronics these days is one of the toughest design chall
 3.
When you say that it locks up for 3 hours, is that with the air contioner on or off? The car interior usually cools down in 10 minutes, and the Z1 should cool off soon afterwards.
That depends on the airflow under the dash. Also depends on whether or not there is enough room around the Z1 for its internal fan to move some air. Just because the car starts to cool down in 10 minutes doesn't mean the Z1, buried in the dash with possibly no airflow whatsoever, is cooling down.
 4.
It's only bad if you're not getting reception. He's obviously getting reception otherwise it would have been moved. Most car dashes still have large amounts of metal substructure. which is more than enough to create a ground plane for the antenna.
Not with plastic in between. The antenna must be touching metal. This makes a larger ground plane and significantly increases the sensitivity of the antenna. Even the Pioneer installation instructions tell you it must be mounted on metal. And he's not getting sufficient reception; that's what started t
 5. The antenna MUST be mounted on metal. Without a ground plane it will not work. That's why the Z1 comes with a metallic pad in case you can't put it right on a metal structure. The picture you posted shows a very, very bad antenna mounting.
 6.
Get security film for your windows! 8) Watch the video on this site if you need convincing: http://www.usace.com/auto.htm
I like it. Do you have it installed? Do you have any idea what it costs to have installed?
 7.
my concern is that it is this damn hot almost everywhere...its summer, so why wouldnt this be happening TO EVERYONE with this unit....
Because it isn't the outside temperature that is the problem, it's the temperature inside your dash where the Z1 is installed. If your Z1, which has a fan on the back to cool the unit, is pressing directly up against something in the dash so little or no air is flowing through the unit then your unit will overheat while someone else who has good airflow won't. Check how much air can flow where your Z1 is installed.
 8.
oh just a small correction two my previous post, light can bend! :D anyone want to debate this? :D
Yes, it can, but normally doesn't. No prisms or other refracting devices in my car. And there's nothing in the manual that came with mine on IR.
 9.
That steering wheel remote is definately ir. The transmitter may be hidden, but if the z1's display is in direct sunlight you'll see it might not always respond to the remote. Well my d1 does anyway.
Can't be IR in the Z1 unless Pioneer found a way to make light bend. There is absolutely no line of sight, and nothing to reflect off, where I have it mounted, and it works flawlessly, including in bright sun. I'll try an experiment in the morning. I'll cover the Z1 completely with something opaque and see if the remote still works.
 10.
The older Sirius tuner works. There are a few things you need to make sure are connected properly: the antenna and the bus connector. Verify these connections with your installer...it looks like you did not install it. Some shops take short cuts and may easily overlook simple connections. Good luck.
Not to mention POWER! Make sure the power leads are connected properly and probe them to make sure you have power and ground.
 11. How is your GPS antenna mounted? It is critical that it be mounted on metal; the bigger the piece of metal, the better. The surrounding metal actually becomes part of the antenna. When you say it is on the dash next to the airbag do you mean literally on the dash (on top of the plastic)? I had mine installed by Circuit City (only because I got free installation) and had a major arguement with the installer over antenna placement. He would not install it anywhere except the roof unless I signed a disclaimer. I showed him a picture from the car's service manual showing a metal brace for t
 12. Just received my CD-SR1 remote today to use with my 3-day old Z1. It works incredibly well as far as I'm concerned. Don't have steering wheel controls in my '06 Explorer but was very surprised how well this one works. First, it must use RF to talk to the Z1 because there is no IR transmitter that I can see and it is not line of sight to my Z1. There is nothing extra to hook up. I expected an IR receiver that wired into the remote input of the Z1 but the package came with nothing but the remote, the bracket, and two straps to hold it. In fact the only minor complaint I can find is tha
 13.
I had an installer do the work. He thinks the unit may be defective. The problem is I bought the unit from Crutchfield. So, in order to send it back and get an RMA, I have to have them take the unit out and then wait X number of days to have Crutchfield receive my unit and send me another one. I would probably just opt to have the installer sell me the unit and that way if there is a defect, it can be replaced instantly. The thing that is weird is that the AVIC-Z1 recognizes that there is an XM radio connected. It just keeps saying check antenna and the antenna is connect
 14.
I just had a June 2006 AVIC-Z1 installed this past Saturday and Ducatiboy's flasher worked as advertised. I couldn't be happier. My only problem is with my XM satellite radio with NavTraffic, and I don't think the flasher device had anything to do with that. It keeps telling me to check the antenna. The antenna has been checked and is connected.Everything else about the AVIC-Z1 works beautifully. I just wish I could get my satellite radio to work so I could see how that looks and sounds, as well as use the traffic features on my AVIC-Z1 too.
Did you install
 15. Actually don't avoid the big box stores; they're the ones with their own warehouses and large inventories. I got mine a week ago at Circuit City and it is an April '06 unit. They pull out of their own inventory and only reorder from Pioneer when the warehouse is out. The small stores don't keep any inventory; 6ave has had July '06 units for quite some time now.
 16. Just spent my first full day with my new Z1, but I have been reading everything, including the manuals, for the last 2 weeks. According to the manual the Z1 will monitor the VSS and over time adapt to it. So I don't think the numbers really matter, only that the pulses on the VSS vary proportionately to speed. For reference, my '06 Explorer did about 3-4 in the parking lot and got up to about 24 - 25 on the highway (approx. 60-ish).
 17. It sounds like you have the parking brake wire connected to the Z1. According to the instructions you must disconnect the parking brake wire to the Z1 when installing the DB flasher. Check out the last line in the instructions.
 18.

You got a decent deal but they mislead you a little. Circuit City actually has the unit on sale for $2049 with free installation. I got an April '06 unit last week and had it installed (for free) today. So you actually got about $80 off total. You might want to go back and complain to the manager that they didn't tell you it was on sale (look at the website). They might do a price correction and refund part of the cost. It's certainly worth a shot.
Thanks!! You are the man!! I gave the manager a call and told him the situation. He ch
 19. I'd like to know why the Sirius support is pitiful compared to the XM support. I've had Sirius for years and my old Kenwood HU with the tiny 2-line dot matrix display gave more information than the 7" video screen on my new Z1.

 21.
So, I feel like its time for me to contribute, since I've been leeching information from this site for about 2 months now. I installed the Z1 and some extras in my Xterra and also did the faceplate thing with my old head unit. Pretty happy with the results. Check out the before, after and faceplate pics. Enjoy. Stoked!
Hi Stoked, Your Z1 cover looks great. I bought a stock radio on ebay and I am going the same route. Could you post a couple of pictures of the back of the fake to show how you mount it on the Z1? I know you said you put foam on th
 22. Well, I'm not an expert (my Z1 is getting installed tomorrow morning) but from what I understand about the Pioneer design I don't see how it could work. The Z1, like all newer Pioneer units, uses a gyroscope internally to detect motion. If you find out otherwise please let us know!
 23. Just installed the SIR-PNR2 Sirius receiver in my '06 Explorer and brachoza is correct. Just removed the plastic lock from around the metal connector and the stock Ford antenna plugged right in. Thanks brachoza.

Pioneer just doesn't support it yet. And add me to the list of people dissapointed with the Sirius support. My old Kenwood 1U HU with a simple 2 line display still displayed more info on those
 25.
Post questions you would like answers to or concerns here and I'll be happy to pass them along. . . . I think we all know why they would disable the lights trick on the box.. its all about liability.. they could only plead ignorance for so long.. once the little trick became so well known I think they knew they had to plug that hole.
I for one hope you do ask this though. I know this country is run by the liability lawyers these days but please point out to them that every OEM navi unit sold in any car in America (at least all the ones I have been in)
