  1. 4. If you're listening to audio, hit the MAP button, it goes to nav. If you're in nav, push the volume knob. It switches back to the audio source. 5. WHY??? I'll try the volume nob thing, though personally I think I'd still prefer a toggle button. As for the angle adjustment on the screen, it can mean the difference between a screen that is illegible due to glare and one that can be read.
  2. Keeping the D4 cheap will probably mean no hard drive or second DVD drive. However, there are a few simple improvements that could really improve upon the D3 and wouldn't cost much. 1.- More onboard RAM. How about enough RAM to keep your entire state and the surrounding states in memory at all times? Flash RAM is cheap, and some 256 megs should easily do it. This would obviate the need for putting in the map disk except for very long trips. 2.- Fix the iPod interface bugs. Really, this should also be a free update for the D3. 3.- Album art (which, apparently, will show up on new mo
  3. Check out the pictures: the iPod interface shows album art!!!! Kewl!!!
  4. Actually, you can search for an intersection. First search for the street, then when prompted for the house number you'll have the option of entering a cross street instead.
  5. I've owned lots of navigation units over the years, starting with a Navman ICN 630. In general I've been pretty pleased with most of them. They mostly do a pretty good job of getting you to your destination, even if the route isn't always the exact same on you would have chosen. The only one I did not like was the Destinator software package that was included on a PDA unit I bought once. It was so awful that I felt like throwing it out the window on several occasions. My wife hates GPS units since that experience (even though she uses my old Navman regularly). Once I upgraded that PDA to TomTo
  6. Placement is a lot less critical these days with the enhanced sensitivity of the latest SiRF chips. I put my antenna under the rear windshield and have no problems with reception. What's particularly significant about this is that I drive an MR2 Turbo, so my rear windshield is at a 90 degree angle, meaning that the roof of the car is directly above the GPS antenna, not clear glass as you'd have if you placed it under an angled windshield like the front windsheild.
  7. I'm having the exact same problem with a PNR1 I bought refurbished off eBay. Trying to get an exchange worked out.

    Ipod Interface

Divide your artists up into genres and then first search by genre. You should be able to reduce your list sizes that way (Classical, Country, Rock, Pop, Rap etc.). Even if you listen to, say, mostly heavy metal music you could divide into Thrash Metal, Speed Metal, Classic Metal, Pop Metal, Hair Metal etc. If you listen mostly to classical you can create genres for Romantic, Classical, Baroque, Modern etc.
  9. Getting a Nav unit installed for $100.00 is a pretty good deal, frankly. Though doing tit yourself is a better deal.
  10. You can take the disk out. You only need it while navigating. The unit will copy your route and a bit of the surrounding area, but if you stray too far from your route you'll need to put the disk back in. Don't buy 'em. The bypass is so easy that if you have the (minimal) technical skills to install one of these hardware bypasses, you've definitely got the skills necessary to do the bypass without extra components. No album artwork. Video does not work with the very newest iPods. With the 5g iPods (the generation right behind this one) you can watch videos, but I personally h
  11. Playlists are your friends, too. I've got a main playlist with hundreds of songs that I really like, and several other playlists to suit specific moods. I even used to have a playlist I named "Estrogen Fix" that was just female singers for when I'm in that kind of mood. Don't worry, though, abuot my testosterone levels, as I've also got a "Hair Metal" playlist, in addition to a Jazz playlist, a "Guitar Godz" playlist, an ultra-mellow playlist, a Mellow Classical playlist etc.
  12. The only thing that's illegal is video. The GPS in my Mitsubishi Lancer does everything except video when the car is in motion. In fact, I would never have done the bypass if everything but the video were normally unlocked... even if it is nice to be able to let my daughter watch her Disney videos when she's in the car with me.

    im so fired...

I'm guessing it's a shortening of "fired up."
  14. In the main screen you'll find a "shuffle all" button just below the simulated scroll wheel. I assume you want to shuffle all your songs, not play them all in order, right?
  15. Read this before buying anything from Wisetronics: http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Wisetronics I ordered mine from compuplus.com. It was $699.00 + 14.00 shipping and arrived quickly and with minimum fuss.

    Switch off D3

Yeah, I was a bit flummoxed recently by this. I took tha car to Summit Point for a High Performance Driving course, and got out on the track and the GPS starts giving out directions, even though hte screen is completely dark! I thought I'd turned it off. Of course, there's no way I'm going to reach out and cancel navigation directions at 90 mph on an extremely tight road course. So I briefly pitted the car and cancelled the route, then went back out again. I've never owned a car stereo that was so difficult to actually shut off. Still love it, though.
  17. I hope you never get pulled over for a sobriety test, because that's going to freak out the arresting officer when he asks you to close your eyes and touch your nose!
  18. I'm not really sure what you're asking. You can store your destination into the address book and navigate to it any time by just clicking on it if that's what you're asking.
  19. Yeah that's complete BS. What's especially sad is that it's actually easier to install a D3 with the bypass than to install it the "correct" way (no need to locate the emergency brake wire) so logically an installer should charge you less for a bypassed D3 install than a normal install.
  20. According to Crutchfield it will fit. You can even see the dash adapter that they include when you buy the D3 from them if you click the link that shows the additional parts that are supplied with your purchase.
  21. Thing is: if they buy the map thing, then they won't believe you've got a fancy GPS unit under there. You are right, though, that they may assume you're an out-of towner and less likely to be around to testify in a court of law if they are later caught. So you've got to balance those concerns against each other. All in all, though, if I had to choose between nothing at all and a map taped to the dash, I'd go with the map (which I've done already on numerous occasions).
  22. FWIW, alternator whine is not a problem with the iPod in my 1992 Toyota MR2. So it's not inevitable. I think it really depends on the vehicle and how well grounded everything is.
  23. I copied mine on a +R DL. Works great. I'm using the copies in the car, keeping the originals at home.
