  1. Hmm... Does this fall under, "If the deal, looks too good to be true, it probably is"? sorry, 20-20 hindsight.
  2. I'd say do all your "add-ons" at once. this way you only have to rip your dash apart once. And the wire bypass as well. It won't hurt anything, and once you upgrade your Z2, the bypass will work and again, you won't have to rip your dash apart.
  3. I think that this is exactly the problem. The Avic doesn't "pre-load" an mp3. It just waits until one song is finished and then goes on the the next. The delay is the Avic searching and loading the file from the HD. Not much you can do about this, I don't think. Pioneer would have to upgrade the software to load the next song into memory as the current song is playing. Try playing a bunch of mp3s in Windows media. Same thing happens. If I remember correctly, however, winamp is able to preload the mp3, so you can even put in a fade/mix.
  4. Just installed the ND-BT1. Works fine with the Nokia N-gage. although you have to transfer contacts one at a time. I had a "secret" wire bypassable Z1. So I, naturually, assumed that it already had the Bluetooth upgrade. Nope! After mucking around with microphone placement to get rid of the echo, I finally decided to burn & drop the BT update CD into the Z1. Wow! Night & day difference. I imagine that some futher avic411.com research would have saved me alot of grief! (let this be a lesson to you all, when in doubt, or even if your certain, avic411 it!) I guess I was also one o
  5. The way I understand it, up here in Quebec, the officer has to prove that you were actually watching the video in order to give you a ticket. So it's pretty tough to prove. Just the same, I'll only have the video on in the front if I have a passenger (and they want to watch a movie). That almost sounds like how a cop used to give you a ticket for driving with your lights on (obstruction of justice... yaddah, yaddah), even though it was safer. I guess when people get used to seeing TV screens in the back of cars everywhere, they won't be a distraction anymore.
  6. this is probably what they mean by 3D exit zoom:
  7. I think that someone else had this problem here and it turned out that his vss wasn't connected properly. I think that there is usually a sensor wire that detects engine speed. Is it possible that your vss is connected to this wire by mistake? This would show you moving as long as the engine was running.

    Z1 Update

So does this mean you can update the maps without updating the software (ie. bypass)?
  9. You should be able to mount the antenna inside and still get a good signal. Many people around here have mounted it in the dash (some right on the HU itself). The consensus around here seems to be that using the included "foil" is good, but using a metal plate is better. I don't think grounding the metal plate will make any difference as it is just reflecting the signal. I think that the hood, tailgate, or roof are probably equally good, as long as they are all fiberglass. You may want to avoid the hood because of heat issues.
  10. It allows your Z2 to have a more accurate speed reading by using the same sensor that your speedometer uses. It will also let your Z2 know how fast you are moving when there is no sat signal (i.e in a tunnel or garage).
  11. Hmm... Considering the cost of this thing, that's surprising.
  12. Outstanding! I don't believe you can do that. At least I haven't seen anything in the manual that says you can. Well, the Z's are, in effect, just computers with hard drives. As the hard drive gets fragmented, the system slows down. Chances are that your refurb's drive was already fragmented. The only way to defragment, that I know of, is to remove the drive, unlock it, and then defrag it using your PC software (Microsoft Degragmenter or whichever). There is, supposedly, an update coming in August. However, it's likely that once you use it, your bypass will no longer work (it
  13. I thought about something like that, but was concerned that running a video signal through a relay would cause mucho interference. Your signal quality didn't degrade?
  14. Or if you're cheap: http://www.gimp.org/
  15. You can get XM Traffic if you get the GEX-P10XMT receiver.
  16. Come on man, thats a lame reply. You just trying to up your posting count? I hate that. No, of course not. Since 90% of my driving is local, I've programmed the places that I go to the most. Therefore, I can just call up the destination I want. My Z1 IS bypassed, but I rarely need to use it. So sorry if I disagree that an unbypassed Z2 is not useless. I just thought that since he was asking an opinion on the differences, he might like to know all of the differences. One person's "useless" might be good enough for him.
  17. If your destination is already programmed, it's not useless at all.
  18. not sure if this is valid with the N-series, but with the Zs, you cannot simply use windows to burn the CD. You must use a 4rd-party (nero, roxio, etc.).

    CDDB update

People! Can we get back on topic? .... I used to think the assistant/nanny was toootally hot!
  20. Any universal tuner will work. That's why it's universal. You will not, however, be able to control it from the Z's touch screen.
  21. If you set the camera to only come on when you are in reverse, you will not be able to use the rear monitor (camera and map) mode. How long the camera will last will be dependant, I imagine, on the camera.
  22. Sheesh, and they think us Montrealers are "way up north!" I have no idea. I'm pretty sure GPS should still be accurate even at that latitude. I doubt the US military would design a system that only worked south of the 49th parallel. Otherwise, how would the flex their muscle in the rest of the world? I sincerly doubt that that is the problem, but maybe one of the gps gurus on this board will have a better idea. Or are there any AVIC users in Alaska that can shed light on this?
  23. I don't know, I've "only" got a Z1 and it's been working solidly (knock on wood) so far. I'd check your GPS signal status (same page as I previously mentioned). I know that the less satellites you acquire, the further off from your actual location may be reported. 75 metres seems like a lot, but remember that the AVIC will try and "put" you on a road. Meaning that if it's getting a reported position where this is no road, it will try and move the arrow to a near by road that corresponds with the direction you are going. I don't think the 3D calibration should make a difference, but more
